Why your location matters more for exotic pets than for dogs
Almost every town has someone who will cremate a dog. For a hedgehog, a tarantula or a wallaby, the choice can shrink to one or two providers across a whole region, and sometimes none. Our guide to finding a crematory for exotic pets covers where to look. Location affects three things at once: whether your pet was legal to keep, whether a local crematory has handled the species, and how far an exotics vet is from your door.

How state rules on exotic pets can affect aftercare
Each state decides which exotic animals people may keep, and the lists differ widely. Hedgehogs are banned as pets in a handful of states, including California and Hawaii. Pet skunks are allowed in only a minority of states. Primates and wallabies often need a state permit, and some cities add their own bans on top.
This matters after death in quieter ways. A provider may ask for your permit if the species is regulated where you live. Your permit may require you to report the death. And if you move remains across a state line to a crematory that will take them, a few states have rules about transporting certain animals, even deceased ones. A quick call to your state wildlife agency settles it.
Pet crematories themselves are lightly regulated in most states. One directory found that as of 2026 only 2 states[3] required written documentation to be given to consumers for pet cremation. So your own questions matter: ask for the species handling, cremation type and price in writing. The provider questions list helps.
Town and country
City, suburb or rural: how distance changes your options
Exotics vets cluster in and around large cities, and so do crematories used to unusual patients. In a big metro area, you may have a choice of providers and home collection. In a rural area, you may need to drive your pet to a vet or crematory an hour or more away, or ask your vet to hold the body until a provider's regular collection run.
Small exotics travel well in a cool box with ice packs, which gives you flexibility. Large exotics like wallabies or emus are harder, and many owners arrange delivery by trailer or ask a large-animal provider to collect. Our transport and logistics guide covers both.
Human cremation rates give a rough sense of how much cremation infrastructure a state has. They range from 34.3%[4] in Mississippi to 84.1%[5] in Nevada in recent projections. Areas where cremation is common tend to have more crematories of all kinds, though exotic experience still varies provider by provider.

Small pet cremation prices in other countries
Most countries price pet cremation by weight, with the smallest band covering pets up to 2 to 5 kg. Nearly every exotic small mammal, amphibian and invertebrate falls into it. These published figures give a sense of what individual cremation for a small pet costs elsewhere, each in its own currency.

Australia's figure comes from a survey of listed prices: AUD 412 median[6] for pets up to 5 kg. Protected-species rules also differ abroad. In the UK and EU, some exotics need an Article 10 certificate for commercial use, and Australia tightly restricts which exotic species may be kept at all. If you plan to move remains between countries, check with the national CITES authority first.
Across eight countries, our estimate is that private cremation costs about twice the communal price for the same weight band[7], from a small premium in Tokyo to about five times in Auckland. In the UK, the regulator's cremation pricing appendix found communal cremation two to five times cheaper, and England's pet cemetery registration rules set burial depth and distance from drinking water. Local availability
Where water cremation for pets is easier to find
Water cremation (aquamation) appeals to some exotic keepers, especially amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. It's legal for people in 26[8] US states, and pet providers have adopted it more readily than human funeral homes. Its availability for pets is patchier than flame cremation and tends to follow larger cities.

Questions people ask
Can I take my exotic pet's body across state lines for cremation?
Usually, yes, for common species like hedgehogs or gliders, when you're simply driving to a crematory. For regulated animals, such as primates, some wildlife species or anything under a state permit, check with the wildlife agencies in both states first. Keep the body sealed and cool, and carry any permit or purchase paperwork with you.
Why is there no exotic pet crematory in my town?
Very few crematories specialise in exotics. Most are general pet crematories that handle unusual species case by case. Your local provider may well be willing even if they don't advertise it, so ask directly with the species and weight. If they decline, providers in the nearest city often accept delivery.
Is exotic pet cremation more expensive in big cities?
Often a little, because rent and wages are higher, but big cities also have more competition and more providers who know exotic species. Rural prices may be lower, but you may pay more for travel or collection. Comparing two written quotes is the easiest way to see where your area sits.
Do I have to report my exotic pet's death?
For most unregulated species, no. If you kept your pet under a state or local permit, or it's a CITES-listed animal with registration papers, the permit conditions may require you to report the death or return paperwork. Check your permit or ask the issuing agency.
