Rules on which exotic species may be kept differ across Germany, and protected species may come with records or licences that matter after death. Cremation itself is rarely regulated separately. Below you'll find prices, the rules worth knowing and every Germany city we cover.
Keepers in Germany sometimes find that a species legal in one area is restricted in the next. After a death, that affects paperwork more than cremation. Keep any licence, registration or CITES certificate together, and check whether it asks you to report the death, before you hand your pet to a provider.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, families rarely feel they have to justify wanting ashes back, even for a hedgehog. Competition between providers also helps exotic keepers: a crematory that wants the business is more likely to try a small-animal tray or talk you through what will realistically remain.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Germany
In parts of Europe, pet insurance can help: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement of cremation costs[2]. Cover elsewhere is patchier, and exotic species are often excluded. Before you accept a quote in Germany, check any policy you hold, and ask the crematorium for the smallest-band price with and without collection from your vet.
European crematoria vary widely in how they handle tiny animals. Some have small-animal trays and return a few grams of ash; others recommend collective cremation for anything under a few hundred grams. Neither is wrong. Ask Germany providers what they'd advise for your species, and get the price in writing.

What Germany expects after an exotic pet dies
Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Germany. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.
In Germany, home burial of a small pet is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover and outside water-protection areas. Keepers of some protected species must register them with the local authority and report when the animal dies, so check your records. Ask the Tierkrematorium whether individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung) is possible for a very small animal.
A practical checklist for Germany keepers
- Move your pet out of the enclosure and into a clean bag that seals. If anyone else lives in that tank, keep the lights and heat on for them.
- Label the bag with the species, weight, date and your name.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, tell the vet before arranging cremation. Testing may be needed first.
- Store the body: fridge if a necropsy will happen in the next day or two, freezer if it'll be longer.
- Check your paperwork if the species needed a permit or CITES records, and whether you need to report the death.
- Book the cremation once you've found a provider who's confident with the species, and ask for a certificate naming it.

Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?
For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
Where can I get a necropsy for my exotic pet in Germany?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in the larger cities often perform necropsies or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing.
How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Germany?
Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.
Are there exotics vets outside the big cities in Germany?
Some, but they're thinly spread. Many general practices see the odd hedgehog or reptile, and a few have a vet with a special interest in exotics. For necropsy or specialist advice, keepers in smaller places often travel to Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. It's worth finding your nearest exotics vet while your animals are well, and asking which crematory they use.
How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in Germany?
By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[4], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
