Exotic Pet Cremation in the United Arab Emirates: what to know
Keepers across the United Arab Emirates increasingly look beyond cremation for unusual pets: freeze-drying, resin, framed molts and taxidermy all suit animals that were admired on display in life. Whatever you choose, decide before booking a cremation, because preservation needs the whole body.
From hedgehogs and sugar gliders to axolotls, tarantulas and larger exotics, keepers in the United Arab Emirates face the same first question: fridge or freezer? Refrigerate if you want a necropsy, freeze if you want preservation or time to choose. This page explains the rest, from prices to paperwork.
We cover 4 communities in the United Arab Emirates, from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to smaller towns.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
Cremation customs differ from country to country, and so do the words providers use. 'Private', 'individual', 'separate' and 'single' usually mean your pet is cremated alone; 'communal', 'collective' and 'shared' usually mean nothing is returned; 'partitioned' sits in between. When you speak to a provider in the United Arab Emirates, ask them to describe the process in plain words rather than relying on the label.
the United Arab Emirates prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip
Where published prices are scarce, compare like with like. Ask each provider near the United Arab Emirates four things: the price for your pet's weight, whether cremation is individual or shared, what container is included and how long the return takes. In the markets we've compared, private cremation is often about double the shared price[1], which gives you a rough yardstick.
Because services and rules differ from country to country, the first call in the United Arab Emirates is usually to the vet who treated your pet. They'll know whether a local provider handles exotic species and whether any paperwork applies. The table shows published small-pet prices from elsewhere as a rough guide.
| Place | Shared (communal) | Separate (private) |
|---|---|---|
| UAE (pet under 5 kg shared; up to 30 kg separate) | AED 700 to 900 | AED 2,300 to 2,700 |
| United States (pets up to 30 lb) | $45 to $75 | $100 to $175 |

What the United Arab Emirates expects after an exotic pet dies
You don't need a permit to have a hedgehog or sugar glider cremated in most places. But if your pet was a regulated species, if you want to keep parts such as a skull or quills, or if you plan to move remains across a state or national border, check first with the agency that issued your permit or with the national CITES authority. Burial rules for the United Arab Emirates are below.
In the UAE, burying animals isn't generally permitted and private ownership of many wild and dangerous animals is banned, so legally kept exotics are small species that are usually cremated. Shared cremation for a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900. Ask whether separate cremation is offered for very small animals and what would be returned.
The first day, step by step
- For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first, then walk the enclosure or paddock looking for anything dangerous or any clue to the cause.
- Cover the body and keep it in shade, raised off the ground where possible, somewhere scavengers can't get to it.
- Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
- Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, and ask whether they collect, how many people they send and what access they need.
- Check your paperwork. If your animal was kept on a licence or permit, the conditions may say the issuing body has to be told when it dies.
- Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day; a body that size can't go in a household freezer.
- Ask what will come back. A big animal leaves a full urn's worth, nothing like a glider, so pick a container sized for that.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Keeping your pet's ashes at home is the most common choice, and there's no time limit. A glider or hedgehog's remains fit in a keepsake urn smaller than an egg cup. When you're ready, you might add a name plate, move them into a pendant or share a little with family.

Questions people ask
How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in the United Arab Emirates?
By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[3], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?
For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
What should I bring when I drop my pet at a crematory in the United Arab Emirates?
Your pet, sealed in a labelled bag and kept cool in a cool box; any permit or certificate if the species is regulated; and a note of what you want: individual or communal, the container, and whether you'd like a keepsake such as some fur or an ink print. Ask for a signed form and a date when the remains will be ready.
Where can I get a necropsy for my exotic pet in the United Arab Emirates?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in the larger cities often perform necropsies or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing.
How many communities do you cover in the United Arab Emirates?
We currently have local exotic pet cremation guides for 4 communities in the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how to find a provider who handles unusual species.
How much does exotic pet cremation cost in the United Arab Emirates?
Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.
