An exotic pet aftercare plan you can fill in tonight

Chinchillas can live up to 20 years[1], and many reptiles longer still, so there's usually time to plan calmly. This worksheet holds the details a provider will ask about an uncommon species, all in one place.

  • Six fields written for uncommon species
  • Side-by-side quote comparison
  • Copy, download or email it to yourself

An exotic pet aftercare plan you can fill in tonight

What should I record before contacting the team?

Exotic Pet Cremation Services uses this worksheet to prepare worldwide inquiries. Your entries stay in this pageโ€™s memory until you copy, download or open an email draft. Reloading clears the fields. Record the requested outcome and location, leaving unresolved choices as questions and sensitive medical or personal details out of a shared copy.

0 of 6 fields have an entry. This is a completion count, not a safety score or booking approval.

How do I compare two itemized quotes?

Exotic Pet Cremation Services compares your entered amounts for worldwide inquiries; it does not supply market prices. Use two written quotes in one currency, counting each charge once. Leave unknown amounts blank and use zero only for confirmed inclusions or no charge. Put taxes and other separate charges in the final row.

The tool adds your entries. It does not estimate prices, recommend a provider or establish that two service definitions are equivalent.

How can I keep and share my planning record?

Exotic Pet Cremation Services lets you keep this worldwide planning record with your answers, selected source and entered quote amounts. Copying or downloading creates a copy you control. Opening an email draft lets you review the text in your email app before sending; none of these actions automatically submits an inquiry.

Clear entries removes all worksheet fields, including quote amounts and currency. It does not delete a copy you already saved or an email draft.

Before you need it

Why uncommon species reward a little planning

With a dog or cat, almost any local pet crematory can help at short notice. With a veiled chameleon, a sugar glider or a 12-foot python, you may need to call two or three places before someone says yes. Doing that search on a calm afternoon is far easier than doing it on the day.

Most people don't shop around once a loss happens. In a UK market study, 89%[2] of pet cremation buyers didn't compare providers, and only 52%[3] recalled being given price information. A finished worksheet makes it simple to ask two providers the same questions and compare like with like.

89%[2]

89% of UK owners who bought a pet cremation did not compare different providers; 9% did.

52%[3]

Only 52% of UK cremation buyers recalled receiving information on the price of the service and different packages.

Field by field

How to fill in each part of the worksheet

Start with your country and city at the top. For many countries outside the US, choosing yours adds a short planning question with a linked public source. You don't need a street address. Then work through the six fields; a few words each is plenty, and "to confirm" is a perfectly good answer.

  1. Common and scientific species name. "Leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius)" gets a quicker answer than "lizard", and some permit rules list animals by Latin name.
  2. Length and weight. Weigh small pets on a kitchen scale now. For snakes and monitors, length matters as much as weight because of how the body is laid in the chamber.
  3. Current condition and vet instructions. Note any illness, recent treatment or whether your vet has asked for a necropsy, which must happen before cremation.
  4. Possession or transfer documents. Record any permit, license or registration number, and whether a death or transfer must be reported.
  5. Ash or non-ash keepsake. A tiny animal may return very little ash. Write whether you want ashes back, a photograph, a resin piece or something else.
  6. Authorized contact. Name the one person who can sign off on transport and cremation, with a backup.

Prices

Comparing two quotes for an exotic animal

Under the six fields, the worksheet has a two-column table for Quote A and Quote B. Its rows follow what tends to move the price for exotics: species-specific handling, documentation, collection, the memorial method you chose, and a final row for taxes and other charges. Enter amounts only from written quotes, in one currency, and leave anything unknown blank.

The worksheet adds up what you enter and shows the difference once both columns are complete. It doesn't supply market prices. For a starting estimate, try the cremation cost calculator, then budget urns and keepsakes with the memorial budget planner.

What to do with the finished plan

You can copy the plan, download it as a plain text file, or open an email draft addressed to our team. None of these sends anything automatically. A downloaded copy is handy to keep with your pet's vet records or care sheet, so a partner or pet sitter can find it. Revisit it once a year or whenever your pet's weight, health or paperwork changes, since an old weight can throw off both the quote and the keepsake you pick.

If you'd like help finding providers, paste the key lines into the form at the top of this page. We'll reply by email with options that accept your species. Our services page explains the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation before you choose.

Planning tips specific to exotic pets

  • Find your nearest exotic-savvy vet now. If the closest one is an hour away, write down the after-hours option too.
  • Plan for cooling. Small bodies cool quickly but also deteriorate quickly in heat. Note where you would keep your pet overnight, wrapped and cool, if needed.
  • Decide about cage mates. Some species notice a missing companion. Note whether you'd like them to see the body first.
  • Think about timing. In one US survey, the most common wish was for a pet to leave the vet hospital in less than 24 hours[5] of death. Ask how quickly collection can happen.
  • Rehoming isn't aftercare, but it's related. If you're planning for a species you can no longer keep, some US states run surrender programs; Florida's exotic pet amnesty program is free[6] year-round.

The pre-planning guide for uncommon species goes deeper, and the transport and logistics article covers moving a body safely. If you're not sure which detail to tackle first, the three-step quiz will point you to one.

Budget for extras you might want on the day. Our estimate from posted US price lists is that witnessing or viewing a cremation adds about $125 at the median, anywhere from $25 to $350[7]. Long-lived species make a written plan more valuable: the Merck Veterinary Manual notes chinchillas can live up to 20 years, long enough for a household to change around them. If you're in Florida and can no longer keep a prohibited species, the state's Exotic Pet Amnesty Program rehomes animals free of charge. Compare prices on your local page and see what other keepers planned on the poll results page.

Questions people ask

Is my exotic pet worksheet saved anywhere?

No. Entries live only in the open page and disappear when you reload. To keep them, use copy, download or the email draft. Nothing reaches our team unless you send it yourself or use the contact form.

What if I don't know my pet's scientific name?

Write the common name and any morph or subspecies you know, then add "to confirm". Your vet's records often include the scientific name, and a breeder or rescue can usually tell you. It's worth checking because some permit lists use Latin names only.

How long does it take to get an exotic pet's ashes back?

Many US families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[8], though providers that need to arrange special handling for an uncommon species may take longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book and note it on your worksheet.

Do I need to report my exotic pet's death?

Sometimes. If your species needed a permit, license or registration, the issuing authority may expect notice of death or transfer. Check with that authority before arranging transport; a crematory can't give that permission for them. Record what they say in the documents field.

Can I plan for more than one exotic pet on one sheet?

It's easier to fill in one sheet per animal, because weight, paperwork and keepsake wishes usually differ. Download each as its own file with the pet's name in the title so they're easy to find later.
