Exotic Pet Cremation in Spain: what to know
This page is a starting point for exotic pet aftercare anywhere in Spain. Below you'll find published prices, notes on burial and scattering, and every city we cover. If you'd rather not make the calls yourself, tell us about your pet and we'll email you a shortlist of providers comfortable with unusual animals.
Keepers across Spain increasingly look beyond cremation for unusual pets: freeze-drying, resin, framed molts and taxidermy all suit animals that were admired on display in life. Whatever you choose, decide before booking a cremation, because preservation needs the whole body.
We cover 17 communities in Spain, from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to smaller towns.

Cremation habits in Spain, and what they mean for keepers
In Spain, about 50.11%[1] of people are cremated. That places it in the middle: plenty of crematories, but not all of them used to unusual requests. Exotics vets are the best bridge, because they deal with local providers regularly and know which ones have handled small mammals, amphibians or invertebrates carefully.
That Spain rate is a human statistic published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What exotic pet cremation costs in Spain
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight, so most exotic pets fall into the smallest band. A German consumer guide lists individual cremation at EUR 85-205 / EUR 165-375[2] (collective first, individual second), and an Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[3]. Ask Spain providers for the price for your pet's actual weight.
European crematoria vary widely in how they handle tiny animals. Some have small-animal trays and return a few grams of ash; others recommend collective cremation for anything under a few hundred grams. Neither is wrong. Ask Spain providers what they'd advise for your species, and get the price in writing.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (consumer guide, all sizes) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from EUR 150 |
| Netherlands (average across 31 crematoria, dogs) | about EUR 200 | about EUR 300 |

Permits, protected species and burial in Spain
Cremating an exotic pet is rarely regulated on its own, but a few things around it can be. If your species needed a permit while alive, the permit may ask you to report the death. Protected species listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in endangered animals, may need their records kept. Burial and scattering follow local rules. Here's what applies in Spain.
Step by step in Spain
- If the death was sudden, start with the enclosure: is the power on, and are temperature, humidity and water quality where they should be? Any other animals of that species come first; aftercare can wait.
- Call the vet who treats your species around Spain and ask if a necropsy would tell you anything.
- Keep the body chilled, not frozen, until you've decided about a necropsy.
- Wash your hands and any tools you used before returning to the rest of your animals.
- Ask the provider three questions: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, and what, honestly, will come back?
- Confirm everything in writing before you hand your pet over.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
If your pet was preserved rather than cremated, a freeze-dried hedgehog or a resin-set spider becomes its own memorial. If they were cremated, you might keep the certificate naming the species alongside a favourite photo. Our resin and display memorials guide covers options that work for very small animals.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Spain?
For people, about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain end in cremation, which gives a sense of how established cremation is locally. It says less about exotic pets: experience with unusual species varies from provider to provider, so asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
What should I bring when I drop my pet at a crematory in Spain?
Your pet, sealed in a labelled bag and kept cool in a cool box; any permit or certificate if the species is regulated; and a note of what you want: individual or communal, the container, and whether you'd like a keepsake such as some fur or an ink print. Ask for a signed form and a date when the remains will be ready.
How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in Spain?
By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[5], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Will crematories in Spain take unusual species?
Many will, but experience varies. Some have cremated hedgehogs and gliders often; others hesitate over invertebrates or very large exotics. Give the species and weight when you call, and ask whether they've handled something similar. Your exotics vet usually knows which local provider to trust.
Do I need to report an exotic pet's death in Spain?
For most unregulated species, no. If your pet was kept under a permit or licence, or is a protected species with registration papers, the conditions may require you to report the death. Check your paperwork or ask the agency that issued it.
Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Spain?
Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.
