Exotic Pet Cremation in Singapore: what to know
From hedgehogs and sugar gliders to axolotls, tarantulas and larger exotics, keepers in Singapore face the same first question: fridge or freezer? Refrigerate if you want a necropsy, freeze if you want preservation or time to choose. This page explains the rest, from prices to paperwork.
Rules on which exotic species may be kept differ across Singapore, and protected species may come with records or licences that matter after death. Cremation itself is rarely regulated separately. Below you'll find prices, the rules worth knowing and every Singapore city we cover.
We cover 5 communities in Singapore, from Singapore, Bukit Timah and Orchard to smaller towns.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
About 81.16%[1] of people in Singapore are cremated, so the infrastructure is there. What varies is experience with unusual species. Some local crematories now offer water cremation too, which returns a little more bone material than flame and appeals to amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. Ask whether it's available and what it costs for a very small pet.
The cremation figure for Singapore comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What exotic pet cremation costs in Singapore
In Singapore, private cremation is the usual choice for families who want remains returned, and many providers offer a farewell ceremony. For a very small exotic, ask whether they use a small tray or container so fine remains aren't lost, and what the package includes before you compare prices.
Pet funeral customs in much of Asia are well established, and small pets are often priced in the lowest band with a short ceremony included. In Tokyo, one pet memorial park charges JPY 14,300 / JPY 22,000[2] for communal and individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg. In Hong Kong, a provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[3].
| Place | Communal | Individual |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 | JPY 22,000 |
| Hong Kong (1 to 5 kg pet) | n/a | HKD 1,300 |
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 | SGD 280 |

What Singapore rules mean for an exotic pet
Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. Bag it for household waste, or ask your vet. The notes for Singapore below cover burial and scattering of your pet itself.
In Singapore, only a short list of animals may be kept as pets, and hedgehogs and sugar gliders are not on it. Legally kept exotics, such as some small reptiles, fish and amphibians, are usually cremated, since home burial isn't practical for most families. Ask whether the provider can return remains for a very small animal and whether a niche is extra.
Step by step in Singapore
- If the death was sudden, look at the enclosure first: temperature, humidity, power and water quality. If you keep others of the same species, their safety comes before aftercare.
- Call the vet who treats your species in or near Singapore, and ask whether a necropsy is worthwhile.
- Keep the body chilled, not frozen, while you make up your mind about a necropsy.
- Wash your hands and any tools you used before returning to the rest of your animals.
- Ask the provider three questions: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, and what, honestly, will come back?
- Confirm everything in writing and only then let your pet go.
Keeping a small, special pet close
A memorial doesn't have to involve ashes at all. Some keepers in Singapore plant native wildflowers for pollinators after losing an invertebrate, or install a small frog-friendly pond (without releasing anything) after losing an amphibian. A living memorial that helps wild relatives can feel especially fitting.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in Singapore?
By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[5], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Where can I get a necropsy for my exotic pet in Singapore?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in the larger cities often perform necropsies or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing.
Do I need to report an exotic pet's death in Singapore?
For most unregulated species, no. If your pet was kept under a permit or licence, or is a protected species with registration papers, the conditions may require you to report the death. Check your paperwork or ask the agency that issued it.
Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?
For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Singapore?
Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.
