Free calculators built for unusual pets

Most pet tools assume a 10 lb cat or a 60 lb dog. These let you enter a 120 g glider or a 40 lb wallaby, and they're honest when the usual 3-5% of body weight[1] ash rule doesn't fit.

  • Kilograms or pounds, from tiny to large
  • Every range shows where its numbers come from
  • No sign-up, and nothing you enter is stored

Not sure where to begin?

Which tool to open first, depending on your situation

Each tool answers one question. Start with the one that matches what's worrying you most right now, then move on if you need to.

  • Your pet has just died and you're unsure whether cremation is worth it: open the ashes weight estimator first. If it suggests almost nothing will come back, the options comparison helps you weigh communal cremation, burial or preservation instead.
  • You have a quote and want to know if it's fair: the cremation cost calculator gives you a sourced range for the same weight and country.
  • You're choosing a container or a keepsake: use the urn size tool, then the sharing planner if more than one person wants a portion.
  • Your pet is alive but getting older: the age calculator shows the life stage, and the memorial budget planner lets you set money aside calmly, long before you need it.

Every tool works for animals from a few grams to well over a hundred pounds. Where the usual rules break down, as they do for invertebrates and amphibians, the page under each tool explains why.

Two published references sit behind several of these tools: a forensic study of 100 human cremations that measured ashes as a share of body weight, and the Merck Veterinary Manual's table of reptile lifespans in captivity, which is worth reading alongside the age calculator if you keep a bearded dragon or ball python. Once you have a figure, compare it with what providers charge on your local page.

What will it cost?

Cremation cost calculator: a fair price range before you call

Enter your pet's weight, the type of cremation and your country, and add any extras such as home pickup or a keepsake container. You'll get a low-to-high range and a line-by-line breakdown. It's most useful for spotting whether a quote is in the normal range, particularly for tiny pets that get charged a minimum band price.

By our estimate, the cost of private cremation per pound falls steeply as pets get bigger ($9.2 -> $4.2 -> $4.0 per lb[2]), which is why a 4 oz glider can cost as much per animal as a 15 lb cat.

Will anything come back?

Ashes weight estimator: realistic amounts for tiny bodies

For exotic keepers this is often the most useful tool, because it answers the question providers often dodge. Pick the species type and enter the weight in kilograms or pounds (a 120 g glider is 0.12 kg). It shows an expected range of ashes and compares it to something familiar, like a teaspoon or a sugar cube. For invertebrates and very small amphibians, read the result as an upper limit: little or nothing may be recoverable.

How big a container?

Urn size calculator: from thimble-sized to large

The standard rule is one cubic inch of urn space per pound of body weight, plus a little margin. For a hedgehog, that's under one cubic inch, smaller than most keepsake urns on sale. For a wallaby, it's a full-size urn. The calculator suggests a size band and shows how much would be left if family members want a small share.

Which path?

Aftercare options compared on cost, timing and what comes home

Move sliders for what matters to you, like keeping ashes, cost, environmental impact and ceremony, and the tool ranks private cremation, communal cremation, water cremation, home burial and pet cemetery burial. It's a useful sense check when a species leaves little ash, since the ranking often changes once "keeping ashes" stops being the priority.

Pet age calculator: when to start thinking about senior years

Exotic lifespans vary enormously. African pygmy hedgehogs live around 4-6 years[3], while sugar gliders can reach 9-12 years[4]. Choose your species or the closest match and enter an age to see the life stage and a gentle prompt about planning. It isn't a health check, but it can tell you when a plan is worth making.

Several people, one pet

Ashes sharing planner: dividing a small amount fairly

When a pet leaves only a few grams, sharing needs planning. Enter the total ash (or the pet's weight) and how many people want a portion, and choose pendants, tiny keepsake urns or scattering. The planner shows what fits and what's left. For a glider, a handful of pendants would use almost everything.

The whole picture

Memorial budget planner: every cost on one list

Tick the items you want and adjust the low and high amounts: a vet visit or necropsy, cremation, collection, a container, a resin piece or display case, a print or a planted memorial. The running total gives you a realistic figure before you commit. Small pets are rarely expensive to cremate, but the extras can add up. Cost is a common worry among US pet owners (61%[5] rated it a concern in one survey).

Many keepers already log their pet's weight in grams, which makes these tools more accurate.

When you've got your ranges, compare them with real quotes. Send us your details, browse the services overview, or read how we build these numbers on the research page. Our cost guide for exotic pets explains what a good written quote includes, and the polls show what other keepers chose.

Questions people ask

Can the calculators handle very small weights?

Yes. Most exotic keepers weigh their animals in grams, so switch the weight input to kilograms and use decimals: 350 g becomes 0.35 kg. Enter the most recent weight you recorded. If your pet lost weight during an illness, use that lower figure, since it's closer to what the provider will weigh.

Why might a tarantula leave no ashes at all?

Because that's usually true. The standard estimate assumes a bony skeleton, and cremated remains are mostly bone. Tarantulas and other invertebrates have a chitin exoskeleton that burns away, so providers typically recover nothing identifiable. We'd rather tell you now than let you pay for an urn you won't need.

Are these prices quotes?

No. They're ranges built from published price lists and surveys, shown with their sources. Real prices depend on your area, the provider and any extras. Use the ranges to judge whether a quote is fair, then ask for a written total from the provider, or send us your details and we'll gather quotes.

Is anything I enter saved or sent anywhere?

No. The tools run entirely in your browser and don't store or send what you type. If you want us to find real options for you, that happens only when you choose to fill in the request form.

Which tool should I use for a pet that's still alive?

The pet age calculator and the memorial budget planner are the gentlest places to start. The age tool shows roughly where your pet is in its lifespan, and the budget planner lets you add up costs without any pressure. Many exotic keepers plan early because finding a willing provider can take time.
