Exotic Pet Cremation in Ireland: what to know

Prices for exotic pet cremation across Ireland follow weight bands, so a sugar glider and a small cat usually pay the same minimum. Collection, containers and certificates make most of the difference between quotes. The cost section below shows published figures; get any quote as a written total first.

In Ireland, most keepers arrange an exotic pet's cremation through the vet who treated them, since exotics vets know which crematoria have handled unusual species. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Give the species and weight, and ask what they expect to return.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets

Burial runs deep in Ireland, where cremation accounts for only around 26.56%[1] of human funerals, and pet cemeteries are part of that tradition. Some accept small exotics for whole-body burial in a small plot, and others will inter a keepsake urn for less. If you rent or may move, a cemetery plot gives your pet a permanent place that doesn't depend on keeping the house.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Ireland

European crematoria vary widely in how they handle tiny animals. Some have small-animal trays and return a few grams of ash; others recommend collective cremation for anything under a few hundred grams. Neither is wrong. Ask Ireland providers what they'd advise for your species, and get the price in writing.

In Ireland, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and arranges collection by a pet crematorium. For an exotic pet, ask whether individual (rather than collective) cremation is possible for a very small animal and what they expect to return. Prices depend on the country and the provider, as the table shows.

Before you bury or cremate: Ireland rules worth knowing

If you rent in Ireland, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.

In Ireland, individual cremation for small pets is widely available; one crematorium lists prices from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg, which covers almost every exotic species kept here. If your pet was CITES-listed, keep its certificate with you when you arrange aftercare, and ask the provider what they expect to return for a very small animal.

The first day, step by step

  1. Note what happened. The time, the enclosure temperatures and any symptoms help if you later want a necropsy or a vet's view.
  2. Chill your pet in a sealed, labelled bag within an hour or two, sooner in hot weather.
  3. Choose your path: necropsy then cremation, preservation, cremation only, or burial where it's safe and allowed.
  4. Find a provider who says yes clearly. Our questions to ask an exotic pet cremation provider help.
  5. Check the container size. Most standard pet urns are far too big for a glider or hedgehog; a keepsake urn usually fits.
  6. Collect or receive the remains, then read the certificate and label to be sure the species is correct.

Keeping a small, special pet close

Keeping your pet's ashes at home is the most common choice, and there's no time limit. A glider or hedgehog's remains fit in a keepsake urn smaller than an egg cup. When you're ready, you might add a name plate, move them into a pendant or share a little with family.

If Ireland is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Can I travel with my pet's body to a crematory elsewhere in Ireland?

For common species, yes. Seal your pet in a labelled bag and pack it in a cool box with ice packs. For regulated or protected species, carry your permit and check whether moving the body needs approval. Larger exotics may need a provider who collects.

How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Ireland?

Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.

Are there exotics vets outside the big cities in Ireland?

Some, but they're thinly spread. Many general practices see the odd hedgehog or reptile, and a few have a vet with a special interest in exotics. For necropsy or specialist advice, keepers in smaller places often travel to Dublin, Cork and Galway. It's worth finding your nearest exotics vet while your animals are well, and asking which crematory they use.

Will crematories in Ireland take unusual species?

Many will, but experience varies. Some have cremated hedgehogs and gliders often; others hesitate over invertebrates or very large exotics. Give the species and weight when you call, and ask whether they've handled something similar. Your exotics vet usually knows which local provider to trust.

Is cremation common in Ireland?

For people, about 26.56%[1] of deaths in Ireland end in cremation, which gives a sense of how established cremation is locally. It says less about exotic pets: experience with unusual species varies from provider to provider, so asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.

How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in Ireland?

By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[3], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
