Exotic Pet Cremation in Belgium: what to know
From hedgehogs and sugar gliders to axolotls, tarantulas and larger exotics, keepers in Belgium face the same first question: fridge or freezer? Refrigerate if you want a necropsy, freeze if you want preservation or time to choose. This page explains the rest, from prices to paperwork.
Exotic pet cremation in Belgium follows the same choices as for any pet: individual cremation with remains returned, or communal cremation without. What's different is finding a provider who's comfortable with the species, and being honest about how little ash a tiny animal leaves. This page covers Belgium as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
We cover 3 communities in Belgium, from Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
In Belgium, about 67.98%[1] of people are cremated. That places it in the middle: plenty of crematories, but not all of them used to unusual requests. Exotics vets are the best bridge, because they deal with local providers regularly and know which ones have handled small mammals, amphibians or invertebrates carefully.
That Belgium rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Budgeting for an exotic pet's cremation in Belgium
European crematoria vary widely in how they handle tiny animals. Some have small-animal trays and return a few grams of ash; others recommend collective cremation for anything under a few hundred grams. Neither is wrong. Ask Belgium providers what they'd advise for your species, and get the price in writing.
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight, so most exotic pets fall into the smallest band. A German consumer guide lists individual cremation at EUR 85-205 / EUR 165-375[2] (collective first, individual second), and an Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[3]. Ask Belgium providers for the price for your pet's actual weight.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (consumer guide, all sizes) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from EUR 150 |
| Netherlands (average across 31 crematoria, dogs) | about EUR 200 | about EUR 300 |

What Belgium rules mean for an exotic pet
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Belgium are about burial and scattering.
What to do next, in order
- Note what happened. The time, the enclosure temperatures and any symptoms help if you later want a necropsy or a vet's view.
- Chill your pet in a sealed, labelled bag inside the first hour or two, and faster than that if it's hot.
- Choose your path: necropsy then cremation, preservation, cremation only, or burial where it's safe and allowed.
- Find a provider who says yes clearly. Our questions to ask an exotic pet cremation provider help.
- Check the container size. Most standard pet urns are far too big for a glider or hedgehog; a keepsake urn usually fits.
- Collect or receive the remains, and check the label and certificate name the right species.
Remembering your exotic pet in Belgium
Some keepers in Belgium write a care sheet in their pet's name: what they learned about diet, temperature and behavior, and what they'd do differently. Shared with a rescue, a keeper group or a friend buying their first hedgehog or axolotl, it turns hard-won knowledge into something useful, and it keeps your pet's name alive among people who understand.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?
For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
Will crematories in Belgium take unusual species?
Many will, but experience varies. Some have cremated hedgehogs and gliders often; others hesitate over invertebrates or very large exotics. Give the species and weight when you call, and ask whether they've handled something similar. Your exotics vet usually knows which local provider to trust.
How many communities do you cover in Belgium?
We currently have local exotic pet cremation guides for 3 communities in Belgium, including Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how to find a provider who handles unusual species.
What will come back after cremating a very small pet?
Cremated remains are mostly bone and usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[5]. A hedgehog leaves about a tablespoon, a sugar glider a few grams, an axolotl perhaps a gram, and a tarantula usually nothing. Ask the provider honestly before you book.
Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Belgium?
Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.
Where can I get a necropsy for my exotic pet in Belgium?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in the larger cities often perform necropsies or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing.
