The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
With about 9%[1] of people cremated, Brazil is a place where burial is common. That can mean fewer pet crematories nearby and even fewer that have handled an unusual species. Your exotics vet is the best starting point; if they can't help, a crematory in the nearest large city will often accept your pet if you deliver.
That Brazil rate is a human statistic published by Exame, citing Sincep (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Brazil prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip
Because services and rules differ from country to country, the first call in Brazil is usually to the vet who treated your pet. They'll know whether a local provider handles exotic species and whether any paperwork applies. The table shows published small-pet prices from elsewhere as a rough guide.
In some countries, home burial isn't permitted and cremation is the default for every pet, exotic ones included. Ask Brazil providers whether they cremate small animals individually, whether shared cremation is the norm and what the price is for your pet's weight.

Permits, protected species and burial in Brazil
Most of the decisions after an exotic pet dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, which Brazil and your local authority may regulate, and paperwork for species that were permitted, licensed or protected. Keep any permit, purchase record or CITES certificate together before you call a provider; our notes on disclosure for unusual companions explain what they may ask.
What to do next, in order
- Check that they've really died. A hedgehog that has gone cold and torpid, or a tarantula flipped over mid-molt, can look gone when it isn't. Warm them slowly if there's any doubt, and ring an exotics vet before you do anything else.
- Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
- Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Note the date, the weight and what species they are. Don't add tank water for a frog or newt.
- Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation, and use either for cremation only. Aim to reach the vet within a day or two if you want a necropsy.
- Gather paperwork: breeder or purchase record, plus any permit or CITES certificate.
- Call a provider with the species and weight, then ask two things: have they cremated one before, and what exactly comes back to you.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure the total covers the certificate, the container and any pickup.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
A memorial doesn't have to involve ashes at all. Some keepers in Brazil plant native wildflowers for pollinators after losing an invertebrate, or install a small frog-friendly pond (without releasing anything) after losing an amphibian. A living memorial that helps wild relatives can feel especially fitting.

Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Brazil?
Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.
Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?
For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
Is cremation common in Brazil?
For people, about 9%[1] of deaths in Brazil end in cremation, which gives a sense of how established cremation is locally. It says less about exotic pets: experience with unusual species varies from provider to provider, so asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Brazil?
Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.
How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in Brazil?
By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[2], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Do I need to report an exotic pet's death in Brazil?
For most unregulated species, no. If your pet was kept under a permit or licence, or is a protected species with registration papers, the conditions may require you to report the death. Check your paperwork or ask the agency that issued it.
