Exotic Pet Cremation in Denmark: what to know
Exotic pet cremation in Denmark follows the same choices as for any pet: individual cremation with remains returned, or communal cremation without. What's different is finding a provider who's comfortable with the species, and being honest about how little ash a tiny animal leaves. This page covers Denmark as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
Rules on which exotic species may be kept differ across Denmark, and protected species may come with records or licences that matter after death. Cremation itself is rarely regulated separately. Below you'll find prices, the rules worth knowing and every Denmark city we cover.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
Cremation is the norm for people in Denmark: about 86.48%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That usually means well-established pet crematories and staff who are comfortable talking about ashes. It doesn't guarantee they've handled a glider or a spider, though. A high local cremation rate makes it more likely you'll find a provider nearby; the species question still has to be asked directly.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Denmark rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Prices for small and large exotics in Denmark
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight, so most exotic pets fall into the smallest band. A German consumer guide lists individual cremation at EUR 85-205 / EUR 165-375[2] (collective first, individual second), and an Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[3]. Ask Denmark providers for the price for your pet's actual weight.
In Denmark, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and arranges collection by a pet crematorium. For an exotic pet, ask whether individual (rather than collective) cremation is possible for a very small animal and what they expect to return. Prices depend on the country and the provider, as the table shows.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (consumer guide, all sizes) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Ireland (pets under 2 kg) | n/a | from EUR 150 |
| Netherlands (average across 31 crematoria, dogs) | about EUR 200 | about EUR 300 |

Rules and paperwork in Denmark
If you rent in Denmark, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in Denmark
- Choose the provider before the appointment. Check two things: that they accept your species, and that your vet can pass your pet to them straight afterwards.
- Ask the vet how it works for a small exotic. Because the veins are so tiny, many vets give gas or an injection to sedate first; hearing that beforehand takes some of the fear out of the day.
- Decide whether you'll stay. Plenty of keepers choose to. Take along the hide, nest box or pouch they usually sleep in, so they feel at home.
- Say what you'd like kept: a few quills, a clip of fur, or a paw print if the feet are big enough to show one.
- Write clear instructions on the release form: the species, individual cremation, and that the remains come back to you.
- Ask for an itemized receipt, one from the provider and one from the vet.
- Plan something gentle for afterwards. Coming home to an empty enclosure is hard. Some people clean it out the same evening; others can't face it for a few days.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
If several people loved this animal, you can divide even a small amount of ash. An adult hedgehog weighs roughly 300 to 600 grams[5], so its remains fill little more than a spoonful or two. The ashes sharing planner shows how far that goes: a pinch in a pendant or a tiny vial is often enough to feel connected, and the rest can stay together in one keepsake.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Denmark?
For people, about 86.48%[1] of deaths in Denmark end in cremation, which gives a sense of how established cremation is locally. It says less about exotic pets: experience with unusual species varies from provider to provider, so asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Denmark?
Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.
Do I need to report an exotic pet's death in Denmark?
For most unregulated species, no. If your pet was kept under a permit or licence, or is a protected species with registration papers, the conditions may require you to report the death. Check your paperwork or ask the agency that issued it.
Will crematories in Denmark take unusual species?
Many will, but experience varies. Some have cremated hedgehogs and gliders often; others hesitate over invertebrates or very large exotics. Give the species and weight when you call, and ask whether they've handled something similar. Your exotics vet usually knows which local provider to trust.
Can I travel with my pet's body to a crematory elsewhere in Denmark?
For common species, yes. Seal your pet in a labelled bag and pack it in a cool box with ice packs. For regulated or protected species, carry your permit and check whether moving the body needs approval. Larger exotics may need a provider who collects.
Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?
For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
