What arranging exotic pet cremation in Sao Paulo is like
Pet ownership in São Paulo is high, and there's a well-developed pet services scene, which means you'll often have several aftercare choices. Compare what's included in a private cremation, whether you can be present, and when ashes are returned. Many families keep the ashes at home at first and decide later whether to scatter them in a favorite park such as Ibirapuera or take them to the family's countryside home.
Most São Paulo pets live in apartment towers, many with building rules about pets in lifts and common areas, and traffic can turn a short distance into an hour. That's why home collection matters so much here. When you ask for options, include your neighborhood, your building's access and parking, and whether the car rotation rule affects your own vehicle that day, so the plan works around the city rather than against it.
Necropsy is easier to arrange in a big city like Sao Paulo. Exotics practices here can often do a post-mortem in-house or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and some will then pass your pet straight to a crematory. If you keep a colony of sugar gliders or several hedgehogs, knowing why one died can protect the rest, so it's worth deciding on a necropsy before anything else happens.
About 12,330,000 people live in Sao Paulo.
9%[1]
Only about 8-9% of people who die in Brazil are cremated, according to Brazil's private cemetery and crematoria union (Sincep).
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Merck Veterinary Manual and Merck Veterinary Manual.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
With about 9%[1] of people cremated, Brazil is a place where burial is common. That can mean fewer pet crematories nearby and even fewer that have handled an unusual species. Your exotics vet is the best starting point; if they can't help, a crematory in the nearest large city will often accept your pet if you deliver.
The Brazil percentage above is from Exame, citing Sincep (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Sao Paulo, not as a count of pets.
Planning around the Sao Paulo weather when an exotic pet dies
Wherever you are, the first-hours rule is the same: seal your pet in a labelled bag, keep them cool and decide between fridge and freezer. Refrigerate if you want a necropsy, freeze if you want preservation or need time to find a provider. In warm weather, do it within an hour or two; small bodies change quickly.

Sao Paulo prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip
Where published prices are scarce, compare like with like. Ask each provider near Sao Paulo four things: the price for your pet's weight, whether cremation is individual or shared, what container is included and how long the return takes. In the markets we've compared, private cremation is often about double the shared price[5], which gives you a rough yardstick.
We keep the detailed Brazil price table on one page so it stays current: see Brazil prices.

What Brazil expects after an exotic pet dies
You don't need a permit to have a hedgehog or sugar glider cremated in most places. But if your pet was a regulated species, if you want to keep parts such as a skull or quills, or if you plan to move remains across a state or national border, check first with the agency that issued your permit or with the national CITES authority. Burial rules for Brazil are below.
What to do next, in order
- Check that they've really died. Some exotics look lifeless when they aren't: a cold hedgehog attempting hibernation or a tarantula lying on its back to molt. If you're unsure, warm gently and call an exotics vet.
- Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
- Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Note the date, the weight and what species they are. Don't add tank water for a frog or newt.
- Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation; if it's cremation only, either works. When a necropsy matters, try to get to the vet inside a day or two.
- Gather paperwork: any permit, CITES certificate, breeder or purchase record.
- Call a provider with the species and weight, and ask whether they've handled it before and what will be returned.
- Get the price in writing, including collection, the container and any certificate.
Keepsakes and tributes for an exotic pet in Sao Paulo
São Paulo sits on a plateau, so it's milder than Rio, but summers are warm and wet, with sudden afternoon storms that can flood streets and stall traffic. In warm weather, cool your pet's body quickly with wrapped ice packs and keep it in the coolest room you have. The dry winter months give you a little more time, though a prompt decision about collection still makes the next days easier.

Questions people ask
How do Brazil attitudes to cremation compare?
Exame, citing Sincep (2024) puts the Brazil human cremation rate at about 9%[1]. We show it on the Sao Paulo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
My pet died after being bought recently. Should I contact the breeder?
It's worth it. Reputable breeders of gliders, hedgehogs and axolotls often want to know about early deaths, may offer advice on a necropsy and sometimes have health guarantees that require one. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, until you've spoken to them and your vet.
How long does exotic pet cremation take in a big city like Sao Paulo?
The cremation itself is quick for a small animal, but the whole process, from collection to getting remains back, is often about one to two weeks. Providers in Sao Paulo with frequent collection rounds may be faster. If you want your pet back quickly, ask whether the provider offers a priority return.
Can I preserve my pet instead of cremating in Sao Paulo?
Yes. Freeze-drying, taxidermy and resin work are offered in many countries, though often by only a handful of specialists. Freeze your pet promptly in a sealed bag, and don't book a cremation until you've decided, since preservation needs the whole body. Ask any studio for examples of the same species.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
Is it safe to bury an axolotl or amphibian in my garden in Sao Paulo?
It can be, where local rules allow, but bury well away from ponds, streams, ditches and drains. Amphibian diseases such as chytrid fungus spread through water and can harm wild frogs and salamanders. Never flush an amphibian or pour its tank water outside. Cremation removes the risk entirely, even if little ash comes back.
