Exotic pet cremation in the United States follows the same choices as for any pet: individual cremation with remains returned, or communal cremation without. What's different is finding a provider who's comfortable with the species, and being honest about how little ash a tiny animal leaves. This page covers the United States as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
We cover 2458 communities in the United States, from New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across the United States: summer highs reach about 107°F in Phoenix, while winter lows average -11°F in Fairbanks. In 51% of the the United States communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

Cremation in the United States, and what it means for exotic pets
In the United States, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. That places it in the middle: plenty of crematories, but not all of them used to unusual requests. Exotics vets are the best bridge, because they deal with local providers regularly and know which ones have handled small mammals, amphibians or invertebrates carefully.
That the United States rate is a human statistic published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Prices for small and large exotics in the United States
A tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill. Minimum charges, collection fees and a certificate can make a hedgehog's cremation cost as much as a cat's, even though the cremation itself uses far less time. Remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[2], so a hedgehog's fill a tablespoon. If very little ash will return, ask whether a simple pouch or small keepsake container lowers the United States price, and compare two quotes.
Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[3]. the United States providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.
| Your pet | Communal | Private |
|---|---|---|
| Glider, hedgehog, frog, axolotl, spider or skunk (up to 30 lb band) | $45 to $75 | $100 to $175 |
| Smaller wallaby or large tortoise-size animal (31 to 50 lb) | $50 to $80 | $150 to $250 |
| Large wallaby, emu or big primate (71 lb and up) | $100 to $200 | $250 to $450 |
| Water cremation (aquamation), any size | n/a | $80 to $450 |

What the United States expects after an exotic pet dies
Never flush a dead axolotl, frog, fish or invertebrate, and never empty its tank water into a garden, pond or storm drain. Amphibian chytrid fungus and other diseases spread this way, and released animals, even dead ones, can carry invasive organisms. Beyond that common-sense rule, here is what the United States says about burial and scattering.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in the United States
- For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first and check the paddock or enclosure for hazards or signs of what happened.
- Cover the body and keep it in shade, off the ground if you can, and out of reach of scavengers.
- Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
- Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, and ask whether they collect, how many people they send and what access they need.
- Check your paperwork. Many larger exotics are held under a permit or licence whose conditions can include notifying the issuer of a death.
- Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day, since a large body won't fit a home freezer.
- Ask what will come back. Unlike a glider, a large exotic returns a full urn's worth of remains, so choose the container to match.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Some keepers in the United States write a care sheet in their pet's name: what they learned about diet, temperature and behavior, and what they'd do differently. Shared with a rescue, a keeper group or a friend buying their first hedgehog or axolotl, it turns hard-won knowledge into something useful, and it keeps your pet's name alive among people who understand.

Questions people ask
Are there exotics vets outside the big cities in the United States?
Some, but they're thinly spread. Many general practices see the odd hedgehog or reptile, and a few have a vet with a special interest in exotics. For necropsy or specialist advice, keepers in smaller places often travel to New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. It's worth finding your nearest exotics vet while your animals are well, and asking which crematory they use.
Where can I get a necropsy for my exotic pet in the United States?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in the larger cities often perform necropsies or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing.
Do I need to report an exotic pet's death in the United States?
For most unregulated species, no. If your pet was kept under a permit or licence, or is a protected species with registration papers, the conditions may require you to report the death. Check your paperwork or ask the agency that issued it.
Is cremation common in the United States?
For people, about 55.7%[1] of deaths in the United States end in cremation, which gives a sense of how established cremation is locally. It says less about exotic pets: experience with unusual species varies from provider to provider, so asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in the United States?
By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[5], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.
Can I bury an exotic pet at home in the United States?
Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.
