Sharing a very small amount of ashes, fairly and kindly
A sugar glider lives 9-12 years[1] yet weighs just 85 to 170 g, so its ashes may total a few grams. This planner shows how far that goes between pendants, rings and keepsakes, so nobody is disappointed.
- Start from your pet's weight or the ash you have
- Pendants, rings, keepsake urns and scattering
- See exactly what's left for a main container

Ashes sharing planner
Plan who keeps what. We work in cubic inches, the unit urns and keepsakes are sold in (about 1 cu in per lb of body weight).
Left for the main urn
2 cu in (32 mL)
Out of about 5 cu in in total.
| Person | Keepsake | Ashes |
|---|---|---|
| Me | Keepsake urn | 3 cu in |
| Person 2 | Pendant | 0.05 cu in |
| Main urn | 2 cu in | |
A pendant holds about a pinch of ashes and a ring even less, so jewelry barely changes what's left. Scattering tubes vary a lot in size; check the one you choose.

Setting it up
How to plan a share of your exotic pet's ashes
- Enter the total. Either type your pet's weight (switch the unit to kg for small animals: 130 g is 0.13 kg) and let the planner estimate the ashes, or, if you already have them back, choose "I know the volume" and enter it in cubic inches.
- Add the people. Up to eight people can be included, each with their own choice.
- Pick what each person wants: a keepsake urn, a pendant, a ring or a small scattering tube, and how many.
- Read the table. It shows each allocation and what remains for a main container, or warns you if the total isn't enough.
For small exotics, the warning matters. A family of four each wanting a keepsake urn from a glider simply won't work, and it's kinder to know before the ashes come home. Our article on what to do when a sugar glider dies covers the choices that come before this one.
The maths
How the planner turns grams into pendants and keepsakes
By weight, cremated remains are usually 3-5% of body weight[2]. The planner works in volume instead, using the urn industry's rule of one cubic inch per pound of body weight. Each keepsake has a typical capacity.
| Keepsake | Holds about | In everyday terms |
|---|---|---|
| Keepsake urn | 3 cu in (about 50 mL) | About a shot glass |
| Scattering tube (small) | About 10 cu in (real tubes vary) | Enough for a symbolic scattering |
| Pendant | 0.05 cu in (under 1 mL) | A pinch |
| Ring | 0.02 cu in | A few grains |
A hedgehog of about 450 g gives roughly 1 cubic inch of ash. That's a third of one keepsake urn, or in pendant terms, around twenty. A 130 g sugar glider gives just under a third of a cubic inch (about 0.29): several pendants, or one small vial, and not much more.
Price the pieces before you divide anything: by our estimate the typical sterling silver ashes pendant costs about $190[3], so three pendants can cost more than the cremation itself. The grams come from the 3.5% ratio in a study of 100 cremations, which for a hedgehog at the Merck Veterinary Manual's 300 to 600 g means roughly 10 to 21 g in total. Check keepsake options near you on your local page, and see what other keepers kept on the poll results page.
Worked examples
Two exotic families, two ways of sharing
A hedgehog shared between three siblings. Hedgehogs live about 4-6 years[4], so children often grow up alongside one. Here, each sibling wants a pendant and the parents want to keep the rest at home. Three pendants use about 0.15 cubic inches, leaving the large majority for a keepsake urn on the shelf. Everyone gets something, with plenty to spare.
A sugar glider shared by a couple who are separating. Each wants a keepsake urn. The planner shows "Not enough ashes": the glider's ashes wouldn't fill even one. A better plan is a small vial each, or a pendant each and a tiny keepsake together. It's a hard conversation, but easier with a clear number in front of you.

When ashes aren't enough
Other things to share when there's very little ash
For very small animals, ashes don't have to carry the whole memorial. Exotic pets often leave other things behind that can be divided: a hedgehog's shed quills, a tarantula's molts collected over years, a glider's sleeping pouch or favourite toy. Many keepers split these instead of, or alongside, the ashes.
Personal touches matter to many people. One industry report put pet owners' interest in personalised memorials, and in memorialisation generally, at 51% / 70%[5]. A pendant engraved with a name, or a framed molt for each person, can mean as much as the ashes themselves. Our memorial ideas for exotic pets has more suggestions.
Worth knowing
What the planner can't account for
It assumes the provider returns everything recoverable. For tiny animals, that depends on whether they use a tray and how carefully they collect fragments. Light-boned amphibians may return far less than the estimate, and invertebrates usually return nothing, so the planner isn't useful for them.
It also can't fill the pendants for you. Jewellers, some crematories and memorial suppliers will do it, and it's worth asking since fine ash is fiddly. Check the likely total first with the ashes weight estimator, and size the main container with the urn size calculator.

Asking your provider to divide the ashes for you
Some crematories will divide ashes into several small containers at the time of return, which saves you handling them. Ask when you book, and give them the plan from this tool. Our questions to ask an exotic pet cremation provider includes this.
Or send us your pet's details and how many people want a share, and we'll find providers near you who can return the ashes already divided. The services page explains the cremation options.

Questions people ask
How many pendants can a hedgehog's ashes fill?
Potentially around twenty. A 450 g hedgehog leaves roughly 1 cubic inch of ash, and a typical pendant holds about 0.05 cubic inches. In practice most families fill two or three pendants and keep the rest in a keepsake urn, which is still only partly filled.
Is it enough to share a sugar glider's ashes?
A little sharing is possible. A glider leaves a few grams, about a third of a cubic inch, which could fill several pendants or one small vial. It won't fill even one standard keepsake urn, so plan for small containers and consider sharing other keepsakes as well.
Can I share ashes from a communal cremation?
No. With communal cremation, no individual ashes are returned. If sharing matters to you, you'll need a private cremation, where your pet is cremated alone and all recoverable remains come back to you.
Is it disrespectful to divide a pet's ashes?
Not at all. Sharing ashes between the people who loved an animal is common and deeply meaningful for many families. What matters is that everyone agrees on the plan, which is easier with clear numbers in front of you before the ashes come home.
Can ashes be added to glass or art instead of a pendant?
Yes. Glass artists can fuse a small amount of ash into a bead, paperweight or ornament, and some painters mix a pinch into paint. These use very little, which suits small exotics well. Ask the artist how much they need before you divide anything, as some ask for more than a glider leaves.
