What will your exotic pet's goodbye cost, all in?
Cremation for a small exotic is often the cheapest part. Freeze-drying a pet under a pound starts around USD 650[1] at one studio. This planner puts every piece on one list so the total holds no surprises.
- Every likely cost on one editable list
- Room for necropsy or preservation quotes
- Low and high totals you can print or copy

How it works
Building a realistic budget, item by item
The planner lists the costs most families face: euthanasia, collection, cremation, a container, keepsakes, a memorial and a small farewell. Private cremation and an urn start ticked; tick the others you want and leave the rest. Each ticked line has an editable low and high amount, so you can replace our typical figure with a real quote as soon as you have one.
The running total shows a low and high figure at the bottom. You can copy or print the summary to share with family or keep for later. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.
Lines worth adding
Costs that are specific to exotic pets
The planner's ten lines were built around dogs and cats, and you can't rename them or add new ones. For the costs below, edit the matching line, or type the figure into a line you aren't using, such as Farewell or service, and note what it's for:
- Exotics vet visit or euthanasia. Specialist exotic vets may charge more than a general clinic. For comparison, in-clinic dog euthanasia in the US averages about $139[2].
- Necropsy. Fees vary by clinic and lab, and whether tests like histology are included. Ask for a written quote before agreeing.
- Travel. If your nearest exotics vet or willing crematory is an hour or more away, fuel and time are real costs.
- Preservation. Freeze-drying a small pet often costs more than all other lines combined, and resin work for invertebrates varies by artist.
- A tiny container. A keepsake urn or glass vial usually costs less than a standard urn, which is too big anyway.
Small add-ons add up. By our estimate, paw-print keepsakes at US crematories have a median price of about $32, anywhere from $10 to $76[3]. Some support costs nothing: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline and Tufts' Pet Loss Support Helpline are free to call. Check what local providers include on your local page, and see where other keepers spent on the poll results page.
Worked examples
Three example budgets for unusual pets
| Item | Hedgehog, private cremation | Tarantula, resin memorial | Wallaby, private cremation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vet visit or euthanasia | Varies by exotics vet | Usually none | Varies; home visit may be needed |
| Cremation | $100 to $175 | Not needed | $150 to $250 |
| Collection or pickup | $0 to $150 | $0 | $50 to $150+ |
| Container | $20 to $80 keepsake | Included in resin piece | $50 to $300 urn |
| Memorial | Quills in a vial, $10 to $30 | Resin block, varies by artist | Garden stone, $30 to $150 |
| Rough total | About $130 to $435 plus vet | Artist's quote | About $280 to $850 plus vet |
Cremation prices come from CareCredit's US bands: communal $45-75; private $100-175[4] for pets up to 30 lb. Add-on ranges are typical figures rather than quotes. One industry report puts personalised urns at about USD 50–1,000+[5], which is why the container line can swing so widely.

Who pays
Will insurance cover any of it?
Usually not the cremation. One major US insurer sums up the usual position: Euthanasia covered if medically necessary; cremation not covered by standard policy[6]. A few insurers sell end-of-life add-ons. One US add-on had these terms: $500 limit; $3.75/month[7], covering euthanasia, cremation and keepsakes.
Exotic pet insurance exists but is less common, and cover varies a lot between species. If you have a policy, check the end-of-life wording before you book anything. Our cost guide for exotic pets covers what to ask.

Keep in mind
What a budget planner can't do for you
It can't give you your local prices. The defaults are national ranges, and exotic pet costs vary more than most, because fewer providers means less competition. It also can't tell you which items you'll want. That's personal, and it's fine to leave most lines unticked.
For the cremation line, the cremation cost calculator gives a more precise range for your pet's weight and country. For the container line, the urn size calculator stops you paying for an urn that's far too big.

From budget to plan
Turning your budget into real quotes
Once you know roughly what you'd like to spend, it's easier to talk to providers with confidence. Ask each for a written, itemised quote, and compare it line by line with your plan. The services overview explains what each cremation option includes.

Questions people ask
What's the cheapest respectful option for a small exotic pet?
Communal cremation or, where local rules allow, a home burial are usually the lowest-cost options. Communal cremation is handled with care but returns no ashes. For very small exotics that leave little ash anyway, many keepers choose communal cremation and put the savings toward a small keepsake.
How much does a necropsy cost for an exotic pet?
It varies widely by clinic, laboratory and what's included, such as tissue testing. Ask your vet for a written quote before agreeing, and ask whether the price includes returning the body to you or sending it on to a cremation provider afterwards. The planner has no necropsy line, so type it into one you aren't using, such as Farewell or service.
Is freeze-drying worth the cost for a small pet?
It depends entirely on what you want to keep. Freeze-drying preserves your pet's form, often for a price well above cremation and with a wait of several months. Some keepers find it deeply comforting; others find it harder to live with than expected. Take your time, and keep the body frozen while you decide.
Can I print the budget to share with my family?
Yes. The planner lets you copy or print a summary of the items you've chosen with their low and high amounts. It can help when several people are contributing or when you want to agree on a plan before contacting providers.
Should I budget for a memorial if my pet leaves no ashes?
It's worth a small line. Keepers of tarantulas, frogs and other animals that leave little or no ash often find a visible memorial helps: a framed molt, a planted pot, an engraved stone or a photo print. These can cost very little, and they give you something to look at when the enclosure is empty.
