Exotic pet cremation costs: how to read and compare written quotes
Most small exotics pay a crematory's minimum charge, so CareCredit's US ranges for pets up to 30 lb (communal $45-75; private $100-175[1]) usually apply to a glider or hedgehog too. The real differences between quotes are in the extras: collection, container, certificate and timing.

The short answer
How much does exotic pet cremation cost?
For a small exotic, like a sugar glider, hedgehog, axolotl or marmoset, a private cremation in the US usually costs about $100 to $175 before extras, and a communal cremation about $45 to $75. Those are CareCredit's ranges for pets up to 30 lb, and small exotics nearly always fall into that lowest band. For a hedgehog specifically, hedgehog cremation and burial sets cremation beside a garden grave. Large exotics, such as wallabies, emus and big primates, are priced by weight like a large dog.
communal $45-75; private $100-175[1]
Broader industry guides give wider figures. One US pet insurer lists communal $30-200; private $100-500+[2], with aquamation somewhere in between. Where you live matters too; the locations directory shows how prices shift between cities and rural areas. And cost is a real worry for many owners: in one US survey, 61%[3] said the cost of aftercare concerned them.
Why small isn't cheap
Why does a tiny pet cost almost as much as a small dog?
Because most of a cremation's cost isn't fuel. It's the collection, the paperwork, the staff time to handle and identify your pet, the chamber time, processing the remains and returning them. Those costs barely change between a 100 g glider and a 20 lb terrier, so crematories set a minimum band, often "up to 10 lb" or "up to 30 lb".
Per pound, the smallest pets pay the most. By our estimate from US price ranges, private cremation works out at about $9.2 per pound for a 15 lb pet and around $4 per pound for a 100 lb dog[4]. For a hedgehog under a pound, the per-pound price is off the scale. That's not a sign you're being overcharged; it's how the work is priced.

Reading a quote
Which line items should every exotic pet cremation quote show?
- The cremation itself, and whether it's private, partitioned or communal. For tiny pets the difference matters a lot; see private vs communal cremation for exotic pets.
- Collection. From your home, from the vet, or none (you deliver). One Virginia provider charges $175[5] to collect from a vet clinic.
- The container. A standard urn included in a package is usually far too big for a small exotic. Ask whether they'll swap it for a keepsake size.
- A certificate naming your pet and the type of cremation.
- Add-ons, such as a paw or foot print. Across US crematories, paw-print add-ons have a median price of ~$32[6]; for a hedgehog or glider, ink works better than clay.
- Timing. Standard return, or a paid rush. One retailer's guide says rush service typically adds $50 to $150[7].

Being present at the start of a cremation is another add-on some providers offer. Posted surcharges to witness range from $25 to $350, with a median of about $125[8]. Our what happens during exotic pet cremation article explains what witnessing involves for a very small animal.
Worked example
What does a side-by-side quote comparison look like?
Here's an illustrative example for a 420 g hedgehog, showing how two quotes with a similar headline can differ. The figures are made up for the example, but the pattern is common.
| Line item | Quote A | Quote B |
|---|---|---|
| Private cremation, lowest band | $130 | $165 |
| Collection from vet | $60 | Included |
| Container | Standard urn (too large) | Keepsake urn |
| Certificate | $15 | Included |
| Ink foot print | Not offered | $25 |
| Tray or small-animal chamber | Not mentioned | Yes, stated |
| Total | $205 plus a new keepsake urn | $190 |
Quote A looks cheaper at first glance and ends up costing more once you buy a container that fits. Quote B also answers the question that matters most for a tiny body: how the remains will be collected. The cremation cost calculator gives you a fair range to hold real quotes against.

Big animals
How are large exotics like wallabies and emus priced?
By weight, just as a large dog would be, plus any handling costs. A 40 lb wallaby sits in the same band as a Border Collie; a 90 lb emu is priced like a German Shepherd or bigger. For reference, private cremation for an average dog in the US costs about $260[9] nationally.
- Handling or lifting fees if the animal needs two people or special equipment.
- Distance charges for farm or rural collection.
- A delivery discount if you bring the animal yourself.
- A larger urn, since a wallaby can return a pound or more of ashes.

Outside the US
What does exotic pet cremation cost in the UK, Australia and elsewhere?
The same pattern holds: small pets pay the smallest band, and that band isn't small. In the UK, prices run from GBP 50 to GBP 300+[10], from communal for a small pet to individual for a large one. An Australian survey of listed prices put the median individual cremation for pets up to 5 kg at AUD 412[11]. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150[12] for pets under 2 kg, and an Auckland provider charges NZD 305 private against NZD 55 communal for a 2 to 7 kg pet[13].
Few people compare. In the UK, 89%[14] of owners who bought a pet cremation didn't compare providers at all. For exotic pets, comparing does two jobs at once: it checks the price, and it finds a provider who is genuinely comfortable with your species.

UK readers have unusually good data. The competition regulator's cremation pricing appendix found communal cremation two to five times cheaper than individual cremation, and its provisional decision report found only 52% of buyers recalled being given price information. Ask for a written price list before you agree to anything. Our services page explains each option, and the poll results page shows how other keepers weighed cost against getting ashes back.
Planning
How can you keep the total within budget?
- Deliver your pet yourself if you can; collection is often the biggest extra.
- Buy the container separately. One retailer lists keepsake urns at $15–$60[15], often less than a crematory's package upgrade.
- Skip the rush. Freezing your pet buys time without a fee.
- Consider communal for animals that leave little or nothing.
- Check your insurance. Some pet policies have an end-of-life add-on; most standard ones don't cover cremation.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to cremate a sugar glider?
Usually the same as any pet in a crematory's lowest weight band. In the US that's typically about $100 to $175 for a private cremation and $45 to $75 for communal, before collection, container or certificate fees. A glider weighs so little that you're paying for the handling and care rather than the size, so ask for an itemized quote.
Is hedgehog cremation cheaper than cat cremation?
Rarely by much. A hedgehog and a cat usually fall into the same weight band, so the base price is similar; CareCredit's 2025 study put the average US cat cremation at $180[16]. You may save on the container, since a hedgehog needs only a keepsake-size urn, and some crematories have a lower band for pets under 5 lb if you ask.
Why was I quoted a handling fee for my wallaby?
Large or awkwardly shaped animals can need two staff, a lifting aid or a larger vehicle, and some providers charge separately for that. It's a reasonable cost, but it should be written on the quote before you agree. Offering to deliver the animal yourself, with help to lift, can reduce or remove the fee.
What should be included in a written pet cremation quote?
The type of cremation, collection, container, certificate, any prints or keepsakes, and the return time, each with its own price. For a very small pet, also ask the quote to state how remains are collected, such as on a tray. If a line isn't there, ask whether it's included or simply not offered.
Does pet insurance pay for exotic pet cremation?
Standard policies usually don't. Some insurers offer end-of-life add-ons: Lemonade's paid up to $500 toward euthanasia, cremation and memorial items[17], and Figo's paid up to $250 toward cremation or burial[18]. Exotic pet policies are less common and vary widely, so check the wording of yours for anything about cremation, burial or end-of-life care.
