Two quick inputs

How to use the age calculator for an exotic species

The calculator opens on a ferret aged 5. From the Your pet menu, choose your pet's species (the Small mammals group includes ferret, African pygmy hedgehog, sugar glider and chinchilla), or the closest match if it isn't listed, and enter their Age in years; half years are fine. The calculator shows a rough "in human years" figure, their life stage (young, adult, senior or geriatric), the typical lifespan for the species with its source, and a short note about what the stage usually means.

If you don't know your pet's exact age, as is common with rescued or rehomed exotics, use a sensible estimate and look at the stage rather than the exact figure. A vet can often estimate age from teeth, body condition or, for some species, size.

The method

Why exotic pets don't fit the "dog years" idea

Human-age conversions were built for dogs and cats, and they're rough even there. For exotic species, the calculator starts from life stage instead: how far through a typical lifespan your pet is. It takes the middle of the species' lifespan range, marks senior from about three-quarters of that point and geriatric from the point itself, and only then scales the age onto an 80-year human life for the human-years figure. A four-year-old hedgehog and a four-year-old glider are at completely different points in life.

Typical lifespans for common exotic species
SpeciesTypical lifespanCalculator marks senior from
African pygmy hedgehogAbout 4 to 6 yearsAbout 3¾ years
Sugar gliderAbout 9 to 12 yearsAbout 8 years
FerretAbout 6 to 10 years6 years
AxolotlOften 10 to 15 years in good careNot in the calculator (keepers often say 8 to 10)
Tarantula (female)Many species 15 to 25+ yearsNot in the calculator; varies widely

Hedgehog and glider figures come from veterinary sources; ferrets live 6-10 years[3]. Axolotl and tarantula ranges are widely quoted by keepers and vary a lot by species and care. Male tarantulas are the exception to long life: many live only a few years once they mature.

The spread between species is enormous. The Merck Veterinary Manual's table of reptile lifespans runs from 3 to 8 years for Old World chameleons to 20 or more for a leopard gecko, and a study of zoo records for 133,818 parrots linked a larger relative brain size to longer life. At the far end, if Jonathan the tortoise hatched in 1832 as usually stated, our arithmetic makes him about 194 years[4] old this year. Once you know where your pet sits, your local page and the poll results help you plan the next step.

Worked examples

What the result means for a hedgehog and a glider

A 4-year-old hedgehog shows as senior, at about 64 in human years. That's not a reason to worry, but it's a good time for a vet check. Hedgehogs are prone to cancer as they age: 80%+[5] of reported hedgehog tumours are malignant, and most appear in animals over three. Wobbly hedgehog syndrome also tends to progress quickly once signs appear.

A 6-year-old sugar glider shows as adult, at about 46 in human years, with years ahead. Gliders commonly suffer from diet-related illness, and iron storage disease and metabolic bone disease are among the leading fatal conditions. Given they eat about 15-20%[6] of their body weight daily, diet quality matters every single day of their long lives.

A gentle prompt

Why planning early matters more for exotic pets

For a dog, the vet will usually know who to call when the time comes. For a hedgehog or an axolotl, you may need to find a provider who will handle the species, a vet who can do a necropsy, or a studio if you're considering preservation. Doing that research calmly, while your pet is well, makes the end far less frantic.

Many owners start grieving before a pet dies. In a large UK survey, 75.4%[7] of bereaved owners experienced anticipatory grief. If that's you, planning can help: it turns a vague dread into a few concrete decisions. Our pre-planning guide for exotic pets and the pre-planning checklist break it into small steps.

Being honest

What an age calculator can't tell you about your pet

It can't tell you how healthy your pet is. Plenty of hedgehogs live beyond six and plenty of gliders don't reach nine; genetics, diet, housing and luck matter more than an average. If your pet is showing signs of illness, weight loss or changes in behaviour, that matters far more than their age, and your exotics vet is the right person to ask.

Next steps

Small steps to take while your pet is still well

  1. Record your pet's weight monthly. It's the earliest warning sign for many exotic illnesses, and you'll need it for aftercare planning too.
  2. Ask your exotics vet whether they can do a necropsy, or where they'd send one.
  3. Find one cremation provider who will take your species, so you're not searching in a crisis.
  4. Decide whether preservation is something you'd ever want, since it changes what you do in the first hours.

Questions people ask

How long do African pygmy hedgehogs live?

Typically about 4 to 6 years, with some reaching 7 or 8 in good health. They're often considered senior from around three; the calculator marks them senior from about 3¾ and geriatric from 5. Cancer becomes much more common with age, so regular vet checks and weighing at home are worth it as your hedgehog gets older.

When is a sugar glider considered old?

Sugar gliders typically live about 9 to 12 years in captivity, so most keepers think of them as senior from around seven. The calculator marks them senior from about eight and geriatric from ten and a half. Some live longer with an excellent diet and companionship. Watch for weight loss, reduced activity and changes in eating, and check in with an exotics vet.

My pet's species isn't in the calculator. What should I do?

Choose the species closest in size and lifespan, and focus on the life stage rather than the exact figure. For less common exotics, your vet or a reputable species-specific keeper group will have better lifespan information than any general tool.

Is it morbid to plan aftercare for a healthy pet?

Not at all. For exotic pets, it's practical. Finding a provider willing to handle your species can take time, and some decisions, like whether you'd want a necropsy or preservation, need to be made within hours of death. Planning early lets you make those choices calmly.

How can I tell if my tarantula is old?

It's hard from the outside. Molting frequency slows as tarantulas age, so a female that molts once a year or less is usually mature. Males often mature, then decline within a year or two, and a mature male has hooks on the front legs and swollen palps. Knowing the purchase date and size at purchase helps most.
