Union Park, Florida
Exotic pet aftercare in Union Park: the local picture
Union Park is an unincorporated community in east Orange County, roughly nine miles from downtown Orlando, strung along East Colonial Drive between the city and the University of Central Florida. Streets are lined with 1960s and 1970s ranch houses, newer townhomes and plenty of student rentals. If you rent, let the provider know whether a landlord or roommate needs to be present when someone comes to collect your pet.
Union Park stays warm through the year, with highs near 92F in the peak of summer and winter lows that rarely fall much below 50F. That warmth means a pet's body needs cooling soon after death. Lay your animal on a towel in the coldest part of the house, draw the blinds and turn the thermostat down. Heavy afternoon storms can flood side streets for an hour or two, so time calls around them.
Word of mouth matters in a town like Union Park. Local keepers' groups, reptile and exotic shows and breeders often know which provider is happy with unusual species and which one isn't. It's reasonable to ask the crematory directly, too: 'Have you cremated a hedgehog, or anything this small, before, and did you return ashes?'
Union Park's population is around 10,000, the 160th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Union Park run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Alafaya (3 miles, a larger centre), Goldenrod (4 miles) and Azalea Park (4 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Florida thinks about cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in Florida: about 72.5%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That usually means well-established pet crematories and staff who are comfortable talking about ashes. It doesn't guarantee they've handled a glider or a spider, though. A high local cremation rate makes it more likely you'll find a provider nearby; the species question still has to be asked directly.

Planning around the Union Park weather when an exotic pet dies
Axolotls and many amphibians suffer when water warms, and a Union Park summer can push an indoor tank well above what an axolotl tolerates. If one dies in the heat, remove it promptly, bag it without tank water and refrigerate or freeze. Don't pour the water outside or down a drain until you've spoken to your vet about disease.
In July, don't leave your pet's body in a car while you run errands, even in a cool box, and don't plan a garden burial in the heat of the afternoon. If the provider can't take your pet for a few days, the freezer is the safest place. Label the bag with the species, weight and date so there's no confusion later.

How much to budget in Union Park, from gliders to wallabies
Few Union Park keepers have insurance that helps here. One pet insurer says standard policies usually cover euthanasia for a covered illness but not cremation[5], and many don't insure exotic species at all. If you do have an exotic policy, read the end-of-life section before you book; otherwise, plan to pay yourself, and use the memorial budget planner to keep the extras in proportion.

What Florida expects after an exotic pet dies
Most of the decisions after an exotic pet dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, which Florida and your local authority may regulate, and paperwork for species that were permitted, licensed or protected. Keep any permit, purchase record or CITES certificate together before you call a provider; our notes on disclosure for unusual companions explain what they may ask.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Union Park.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Union Park may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Union Park
- Choose the provider before the appointment. Ask whether they take your species and whether the vet can hand your pet over directly afterwards.
- Ask the vet how it works for a small exotic. Many sedate first with gas or an injection, because veins are tiny; knowing this in advance makes the day less frightening.
- Decide whether you'll stay. Many keepers do. Bring the pouch, nest box or hide your pet sleeps in so they're settled.
- Say what you'd like kept: some quills, a snip of fur or, if the feet are large enough to leave one, a paw print.
- Write clear instructions on the release form: species, individual cremation, remains returned to you.
- Ask for an itemized receipt, one from the provider and one from the vet.
- Plan something gentle for afterwards. Coming home to an empty enclosure is hard. Some people clean it out the same evening; others can't face it for a few days.
Keeping a small, special pet close
The Econlockhatchee River runs through wilder country just east of Union Park, and its shaded trails are where many east Orlando households go to clear their heads. Some people find comfort in honoring a pet in that kind of setting. Public lands have their own scattering rules, so ask the managing agency before bringing ashes. A small urn at home can hold them while you decide.

Questions people ask
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Union Park page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Union Park?
The closest communities we cover are Alafaya (about 3 miles), Goldenrod (about 4 miles) and Azalea Park (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Union Park too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Union Park?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 9 miles from Union Park) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is there anywhere near Union Park that offers water cremation for pets?
Possibly. Pet aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) has spread faster among pet providers than human funeral homes, but it still tends to be found near larger cities. It's legal for people in 26[7] US states, which hints at where it's easiest to find. It uses warm water and alkali instead of flame and can return a little more bone material, which helps with small animals. Ask providers directly or mention it in your request.
Should I choose a provider in Union Park or one further away?
Choose the one that's confident with your species. For small exotics, distance matters little: frozen or chilled in a cool box, your pet can travel an hour without any problem. A provider who has cremated hedgehogs or axolotls before, and tells you honestly what will return, is worth a drive.
