Arranging exotic pet aftercare in Tampa

Tampa, Florida

Getting help with an unusual pet around Tampa

Tampa's Solid Waste department removes small deceased animals from city rights-of-way, such as streets and sidewalks, but it cannot retrieve animals from private property. If your pet dies at home or in your yard, the arrangements are yours to make, usually through your vet or a private pet cremation provider. The city route is a removal service, so it will not return ashes or offer a personal farewell.

Tampa pets live in the bungalows of Seminole Heights, the older homes of Hyde Park, high-rise condos along the Channel District and downtown, and newer suburbs spreading north toward New Tampa. Condo towers often require a service elevator booking and a loading-zone spot, so ask the front desk before a collection. Rush-hour traffic on I-275 and the bridges can stretch a short drive, and a pickup window is more realistic than a set time.

Exotic pets in a place like Tampa are often bought from breeders or shows further afield, so the breeder can be a useful contact after a death. Experienced breeders of gliders, hedgehogs or axolotls usually know which vets do necropsies, which crematories handle tiny animals and what the paperwork looks like. They may also want to know the cause of death for their own lines.

About 413,554 people live in Tampa, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.

Families in Tampa often end up using a provider from Temple Terrace (8 miles), Pinellas Park (17 miles) and St. Petersburg (17 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

72.5%[1]

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual; we only apply it to this.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for keepers

About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, so the infrastructure is there. What varies is experience with unusual species. Some local crematories now offer water cremation too, which returns a little more bone material than flame and appeals to amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. Ask whether it's available and what it costs for a very small pet.

That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Tampa only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Seasons in Tampa and the first hours after a loss

Many Tampa keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 91°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.

Hot months (May, June, July, August, September and October) are also when enclosure failures do their damage. A power cut, a failed thermostat or an air-conditioner breakdown can overheat a room of gliders, hedgehogs or amphibians in hours. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet: it helps them decide whether a necropsy is useful, and it helps you protect the animals you still have.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Tampa

Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. Tampa providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.

The Florida price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Florida rules mean for an exotic pet

Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Florida. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.

Tampa's own guidance is published by City of Tampa Solid Waste; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation. The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Tampa.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Tampa may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do next, in order

  1. Check that they've really died. A hedgehog that has gone cold and torpid, or a tarantula flipped over mid-molt, can look gone when it isn't. Warm them slowly if there's any doubt, and ring an exotics vet before you do anything else.
  2. Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
  3. Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Note the date, the weight and what species they are. Don't add tank water for a frog or newt.
  4. Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation; if it's cremation only, either works. When a necropsy matters, try to get to the vet inside a day or two.
  5. Gather paperwork: breeder or purchase record, plus any permit or CITES certificate.
  6. Call a provider with the species and weight, and ask whether they've handled it before and what will be returned.
  7. Get the price in writing, including collection, the container and any certificate.

Keeping a small, special pet close

Tampa stays steamy from May to October, with August highs around 91°F and thunderstorms most summer afternoons. Cool your pet's body straight away: air-conditioning, a tiled floor, a towel and plenty of ice packs. Florida's high water table and sandy soil also make backyard burial less practical than many people expect, which is one reason cremation is the usual choice for pets in the Tampa Bay area.

Questions people ask

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Tampa?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Why does the Tampa page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Tampa?

The closest communities we cover are Temple Terrace (about 8 miles), Pinellas Park (about 17 miles) and St. Petersburg (about 17 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Tampa too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Can I freeze-dry or preserve my pet instead of cremating?

Yes, but decide before cremation, because it needs the whole body. Freeze promptly in a sealed bag. Freeze-dry studios often take months and cost far more than cremation; one US studio charges about USD 650[7] for a pet under 1 lb. Ask for photos of the same species they've done, and whether they accept pets by courier.

Where can I get a necropsy for an exotic pet near Tampa?

Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in a city like Tampa often do necropsies in-house or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Refrigerate, don't freeze, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing and ask the vet to release your pet to your chosen crematory afterwards.

Is communal cremation a bad choice for a very small pet?

Not at all. Communal cremation is handled with care; the difference is that no ashes come back. For a tarantula, a small frog or anything where little or nothing would return anyway, many keepers find communal cremation the more honest choice and spend the difference on a memorial they can keep.
