San Diego, California
Who handles exotic species near San Diego, and how to reach them
San Diego's coast is mild, with August highs around 71°F and no freezing months, so there is usually a little time to think after a pet dies at home. Inland valleys run much hotter in summer, and fall Santa Ana winds can bring heat and wildfire risk. Keep your pet in a cool room with cool packs wrapped in towels. Many homes sit on hillsides or canyon lots that make backyard burial difficult.
The City of San Diego separates dead-animal removal by location: city streets and public rights-of-way, county roads and unincorporated areas, private property, and state highways each follow different routes. Removal from private property carries a fee, and the city asks residents not to put dead animals in trash or recycling bins. None of those routes is a private cremation, so for your own pet's ashes, book one with a vet or pet crematory.
Big-city crematories in San Diego often run collection rounds from vet clinics several times a week, so an exotic pet left at the vet may be picked up within a day or two. If you want to keep your pet at home until you've found the right provider, a sealed bag in the freezer buys you as long as you need. Nothing about a small exotic's aftercare has to be decided tonight.
San Diego is home to about 1,406,106 people, the 2nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Chula Vista (7 miles), Lemon Grove (7 miles) and La Mesa (9 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to San Diego too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
With about 70.5%[1] of people in California choosing cremation, the idea of bringing ashes home is everyday here. For exotic pets, the more useful local question is who has done it before. Exotics vets, keeper groups and breeders are the quickest way to find the provider that treats a 100 gram animal with the same care as a 100 lb dog.
The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for San Diego, not as a count of pets.
Planning around the San Diego weather when an exotic pet dies
Your provider in San Diego will know the local seasons, so ask what they'd recommend right now. In the meantime, a freezer keeps a small exotic safely for weeks, which means the weather never has to force a decision you're not ready to make.

San Diego prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing San Diego quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.
The full price table by size is on our California page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules and paperwork in California
If you rent in California, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.
City of San Diego Get It Done publishes San Diego's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation. The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in San Diego.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in San Diego, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in San Diego
- Move your pet out of the enclosure and into a clean bag that seals. If anyone else lives in that tank, keep the lights and heat on for them.
- Label the bag with the species, weight, date and your name.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, tell the vet before arranging cremation. Testing may be needed first.
- Store the body: fridge if a necropsy will happen in the next day or two, freezer if it'll be longer.
- Check your paperwork if the species needed a permit or CITES records, and whether you need to report the death.
- Book the cremation when you have a provider who knows the species well, and request a certificate that states what they were.
Keeping a small, special pet close
San Diego is spread across mesas and canyons, from beach towns to inland suburbs, and a drive from Oceanside to Chula Vista or from Point Loma to Escondido can take a long time. Most pets live in single-family homes or apartments. Say which community you live in when you request options, because mileage often shapes the pickup fee and how soon ashes come back.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from San Diego?
Usually yes. Chula Vista is about 7 miles away, Lemon Grove is about 7 miles away and La Mesa is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the San Diego page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is it safe to bury an axolotl or amphibian in my garden in San Diego?
It can be, where local rules allow, but bury well away from ponds, streams, ditches and drains. Amphibian diseases such as chytrid fungus spread through water and can harm wild frogs and salamanders. Never flush an amphibian or pour its tank water outside. Cremation removes the risk entirely, even if little ash comes back.
Is there anywhere near San Diego that offers water cremation for pets?
Possibly. Pet aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) has spread faster among pet providers than human funeral homes, but it still tends to be found near larger cities. It's legal for people in 26[7] US states, which hints at where it's easiest to find. It uses warm water and alkali instead of flame and can return a little more bone material, which helps with small animals. Ask providers directly or mention it in your request.
Does pet insurance pay for exotic pet cremation?
Usually not. Most standard policies treat cremation as outside cover, even when they pay for a medically necessary euthanasia[8], and plenty of insurers won't cover exotic species in the first place. A few add-ons pay toward cremation or keepsakes. If you hold an exotic pet policy, look through its end-of-life wording before booking, and keep itemized receipts in case a claim is possible.
Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
