Exotic Pet Cremation in Wyoming: what to know

If you keep an unusual pet in Wyoming, three things shape the aftercare: how far you are from a vet who treats your species, whether you want a necropsy or preservation (which decides fridge or freezer), and whether your species needed a permit. This page covers the regional picture; each city page goes into local pickup, prices and weather.

Exotic keepers in Wyoming range from sugar glider colonies in city apartments to wallabies on rural land. The practical steps differ: a glider can be frozen and driven to the right provider in a cool box, while a 40 lb wallaby may need a large-animal provider and a trailer. Use this page for the regional picture, then open your own city below.

We cover 10 communities in Wyoming, from Cheyenne, Casper and Gillette to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Wyoming: summer highs reach about 89°F in Casper, while winter lows average 2°F in Evanston. In 100% of the Wyoming communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How Wyoming thinks about cremation

Where cremation is as routine as it is in Wyoming (roughly 78.5%[1] of human funerals), pet crematories are more likely to have a viewing room or let you be present as the cremation starts. Keepers of unusual pets often find this reassuring, because it removes any doubt about whether a tiny animal was handled on its own. If you'd like to attend, ask when you book, since it usually needs a set appointment.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) publishes the Wyoming rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Wyoming

Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[2]. Wyoming providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.

Containers are where a small pet's bill can surprise you in Wyoming. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more[3] than a full-size wooden urn from the same crematory, because small, finely made pieces aren't cheaper to produce. If a standard urn is included, ask whether they'll swap it for a keepsake at no charge, or return the remains in a simple pouch you can move later.

Rules and paperwork in Wyoming

If you rent in Wyoming, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Wyoming local government directory.

From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Wyoming

  1. For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first, then walk the enclosure or paddock looking for anything dangerous or any clue to the cause.
  2. Cover the body and keep it in shade, raised off the ground where possible, somewhere scavengers can't get to it.
  3. Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
  4. Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, and ask whether they collect, how many people they send and what access they need.
  5. Check your paperwork. Many larger exotics are held under a permit or licence whose conditions can include notifying the issuer of a death.
  6. Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day, since a large body won't fit a home freezer.
  7. Ask what will come back. A big animal leaves a full urn's worth, nothing like a glider, so pick a container sized for that.

Memorials that suit an unusual companion

Keeping your pet's ashes at home is the most common choice, and there's no time limit. A glider or hedgehog's remains fit in a keepsake urn smaller than an egg cup. When you're ready, you might add a name plate, move them into a pendant or share a little with family.

Next: see what each choice includes on services, run your own numbers in the tools, check the poll results, or pick another area from all locations.

Questions people ask

Can I travel with my pet's body to a crematory elsewhere in Wyoming?

For common species, yes. Seal your pet in a labelled bag and pack it in a cool box with ice packs. For regulated or protected species, carry your permit and check whether moving the body needs approval. Larger exotics may need a provider who collects.

Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Wyoming?

Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.

Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?

For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.

What if the ground is frozen and I want to bury my pet?

Keep your pet sealed in the freezer, or cremate and keep the urn, until spring. In the colder parts of Wyoming, such as Evanston, average winter lows reach about 2°F, so the ground can stay hard for months.

Are there exotics vets outside the big cities in Wyoming?

Some, but they're thinly spread. Many general practices see the odd hedgehog or reptile, and a few have a vet with a special interest in exotics. For necropsy or specialist advice, keepers in smaller places often travel to Cheyenne, Casper and Gillette. It's worth finding your nearest exotics vet while your animals are well, and asking which crematory they use.

How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Wyoming?

Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.
