The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Illinois, at about 60.2%[1], but burial still has deep roots. Both are open to exotic keepers too. Heat, cold and your exotic pet in Chicago
Winter is when heating failures happen. A power cut or a failed heat mat in January, February, March and December can chill a room of tropical exotics fast, and sugar gliders, hedgehogs and many invertebrates don't cope with cold. Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. The first day, step by step
- Choose the provider before the appointment. Ask whether they take your species and whether the vet can hand your pet over directly afterwards.
- Ask the vet how it works for a small exotic. Because the veins are so tiny, many vets give gas or an injection to sedate first; hearing that beforehand takes some of the fear out of the day.
- Decide whether you'll stay. Plenty of keepers choose to. Take along the hide, nest box or pouch they usually sleep in, so they feel at home.
- Say what you'd like kept: a few quills, a clip of fur, or a paw print if the feet are big enough to show one.
- Write clear instructions on the release form: species, individual cremation, remains returned to you.
- Ask for an itemized receipt from both the vet and the provider.
- Plan something gentle for afterwards. Coming home to an empty enclosure is hard. Some people clean it out the same evening; others can't face it for a few days.
Keeping a small, special pet close
Many Chicago families picture their pet somewhere specific: a sunny window in a two-flat, the back porch in summer, or a favorite spot along the lakefront or in one of the city's big parks. Does the Chicago climate change what I should do first?

Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
