Exotic Pet Cremation in Iowa: what to know
Which exotic animals you may legally keep can change within Iowa, not just at its borders, with some towns and cities stricter than the region as a whole. After a death, that matters mainly for paperwork: if your pet needed a permit, bring it along when you hand them to a provider. Cremation itself works the same way for a legal hedgehog as for a cat.
If you keep an unusual pet in Iowa, three things shape the aftercare: how far you are from a vet who treats your species, whether you want a necropsy or preservation (which decides fridge or freezer), and whether your species needed a permit. This page covers the regional picture; each city page goes into local pickup, prices and weather.
We cover 27 communities in Iowa, from Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Iowa: summer highs reach about 88°F in Council Bluffs, while winter lows average 7°F in Mason City. In 100% of the Iowa communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Iowa, at about 63.6%[1], but burial still has deep roots. Both are open to exotic keepers too. For a hedgehog or glider, burial in the garden can be simple where rules allow; for amphibians and aquatic pets, cremation avoids any risk of disease reaching wild animals through water.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) publishes the Iowa rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Iowa
Expect the total in Iowa to depend on four things: the weight band, individual or communal, how your pet reaches the provider and what the remains come back in. If a necropsy comes first, that's a separate vet or laboratory fee, and it adds time to the usual return of 5-10 days[2]. The ranges below are typical US prices; ask any provider for a written, itemised total before you agree.
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[3] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[4], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing Iowa quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.
| Your pet | Communal | Private |
|---|---|---|
| Glider, hedgehog, frog, axolotl, spider or skunk (up to 30 lb band) | $45 to $75 | $100 to $175 |
| Smaller wallaby or large tortoise-size animal (31 to 50 lb) | $50 to $80 | $150 to $250 |
| Large wallaby, emu or big primate (71 lb and up) | $100 to $200 | $250 to $450 |
| Water cremation (aquamation), any size | n/a | $80 to $450 |

Permits, protected species and burial in Iowa
If you rent in Iowa, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Iowa local government directory.
The first day, step by step
- Make sure your other animals are safe. If heating, cooling or water was the cause, put that right before anything else.
- Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, which keeps delicate skin, scales or fur from coming loose.
- Call your exotics vet for advice on a necropsy; it matters most when one animal in a colony has died for no obvious reason.
- Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water, and don't pour tank water outside.
- Ask two providers for a written quote, telling each the species and weight, plus length for a bigger animal.
- Arrange delivery or collection, and keep the body cool on the way.
- Let yourself grieve. Caring for an unusual animal takes real knowledge and time, and that loss is real.
Keepsakes and tributes for an exotic pet in Iowa
Keeper communities often remember animals together. Breeders' groups, exotic pet forums and local shows are places where people will understand why a 400 gram hedgehog mattered so much. Sharing their story there can help, and it may help another keeper spot an illness sooner.

Questions people ask
Will crematories in Iowa take unusual species?
Many will, but experience varies. Some have cremated hedgehogs and gliders often; others hesitate over invertebrates or very large exotics. Give the species and weight when you call, and ask whether they've handled something similar. Your exotics vet usually knows which local provider to trust.
Where can I get a necropsy for my exotic pet in Iowa?
Start with the vet who treated your pet. Exotics practices in the larger cities often perform necropsies or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call the same day. Ask for the fee in writing.
What should I bring when I drop my pet at a crematory in Iowa?
Your pet, sealed in a labelled bag and kept cool in a cool box; any permit or certificate if the species is regulated; and a note of what you want: individual or communal, the container, and whether you'd like a keepsake such as some fur or an ink print. Ask for a signed form and a date when the remains will be ready.
Do I need to report an exotic pet's death in Iowa?
For most unregulated species, no. If your pet was kept under a permit or licence, or is a protected species with registration papers, the conditions may require you to report the death. Check your paperwork or ask the agency that issued it.
Is water cremation available for pets in Iowa?
In some places. Pet aquamation has spread faster than human water cremation and tends to be offered near larger cities. It can return a little more bone material, which helps with very small animals. Ask providers directly or mention it when you send us your request.
How do I protect my other exotic pets in a heatwave?
Keep enclosures out of direct sun, have a plan for power cuts and check thermostats daily. In hot parts of Iowa, such as Council Bluffs where summer highs average about 88°F, a failed air conditioner can overheat gliders or an axolotl tank in hours. If you do lose an animal, chill the body quickly.
