Hedgehog cremation or burial? Every option, side by side
Most families choose between a private cremation, which returns about 10 to 30 grams of ash, and a careful home burial. Hedgehogs live 4-6 years[1], and conditions like wobbly hedgehog syndrome and cancer are common enough that a necropsy is worth considering first.

The short answer
What are your options when a pet hedgehog dies?
There are four realistic paths: cremation (private or communal), burial at home, burial in a pet cemetery, and freeze-drying. A necropsy can come before any of them, but only before, so it's the first thing to decide. Until you have, keep your hedgehog wrapped and in the fridge rather than the freezer.
| Option | What you end up with | Rough cost | Time | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private cremation | 10 to 30 g of ash, a tablespoon or two | About $100 to $175 in the lowest weight band | Usually 1 to 2 weeks | Ask how tiny remains are kept separate |
| Communal cremation | Nothing returned | About $45 to $75 | Days | No ashes, so gather quills first |
| Home burial | A grave you can visit | Little beyond a box and a stone | An afternoon | Local rules, scavengers, euthanasia drugs |
| Pet cemetery | A marked plot, maintained for you | Ask for the plot, opening and upkeep fees | Days to arrange | What happens to the plot long term |
| Freeze-drying | Your hedgehog, preserved | Around $950 at one studio | Months | Can't be combined with cremation |
If you're torn, the aftercare options comparison weighs these on cost, time and what you keep. The full list of options this site can help arrange is on our services page.

Before anything else
Should you ask for a necropsy before cremation or burial?
It's worth asking if your hedgehog wobbled, lost weight, or had a lump. Wobbly hedgehog syndrome (WHS), a progressive nerve disease, can only be confirmed by examining the brain and spinal cord after death. It moves quickly: in one study, the median time from first signs to euthanasia was 51 days[2].
Cancer is the other common question. More than 80%[3] of tumors reported in pet hedgehogs are malignant, and most turn up in animals over three. A necropsy can tell you what the growth was and whether anything could have been caught sooner. Because WHS is thought to run in families, telling your breeder the result may help other keepers too.

Practical care
How do you handle a hedgehog's body safely and gently?
Quills don't soften after death, and a hedgehog who died curled may stay in a partly closed ball. Lay a folded fleece or towel over your hands, or wear thick gardening gloves, and scoop from underneath rather than trying to uncurl them. If they died stretched out, you can gently tuck the legs in so they look as they did when asleep.
- Wrap your hedgehog in the fleece they slept on, or a soft towel, so the quills are covered.
- Place them in a small cardboard box or lidded tub, then in a sealed bag, and label it.
- Wash your hands well afterwards. Pet hedgehogs have been linked to Salmonella outbreaks, and the risk doesn't disappear after death.
- Leave the cage alone for now. Loose quills in the bedding are a keepsake you may want later.
Cremation
What does hedgehog cremation return, and what does it cost?
Ash is the mineral left from bone, and it usually weighs about 3-5% of body weight[4]. Males weigh 400 to 600 g and females 300 to 400 g, so expect roughly 10 to 30 grams back. The quills themselves are keratin, like hair, and burn away completely; what returns is fine, pale bone ash, often a little grayer than people imagine.
communal $45-75; private $100-175[5]
Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where several pets share the chamber but are kept apart; one US insurer lists it at $50 to $250[6]. For a body this small, true private cremation on a tray is the surest way to get back only your hedgehog's remains. Burial at home
How deep should you bury a hedgehog, and where?
Deeper than feels necessary for such a small animal. Dogs, foxes and raccoons will dig for a shallow grave, so aim for two to three feet where your soil allows, and lay a paving slab or large flat stone over the top. Rules elsewhere give a sense of scale: England asks for 1 m of soil over larger buried animals but sets no minimum for small pets[7], and Germany a minimum of 50 cm[8]. In the US, it depends on your state and city, and many rental agreements forbid it.

- Keep away from water. Choose ground well clear of wells, streams, ponds and drains, and above any spot that floods.
- Use something that breaks down. A plain cardboard or thin wooden box and a cotton cloth, not plastic.
- Think about euthanasia drugs. If your hedgehog was put to sleep, the drug stays in the body. US drug labels have warned since 2003[9] that such animals need deep burial or cremation to protect scavenging wildlife. Ask your vet whether home burial is wise in your case.
- Plan for moving. A large planter with a shrub lets the grave travel with you.

A middle path
Is a pet cemetery worth it for a hedgehog?
A pet cemetery suits families who want a grave but rent their home, expect to move, or simply prefer somewhere tended. Many offer small plots or niches for pocket pets, and some will bury cremated remains too, which is a good fit if you'd like both. Prices vary a lot, so ask for the plot fee, the opening fee, any marker costs and the yearly upkeep charge separately.
The most useful question is what happens to the land in the long run. Ask whether the cemetery is protected by a deed restriction or trust, and what they'd do if the business closed.
For a sense of cost, our estimate from five posted US price lists is a median of about $350 for a small pet's whole-body burial, including the plot and opening and closing the grave[10]. That's often more than a private cremation for a 400 g hedgehog. If you'd rather bury at home, read England's groundwater rules for animal burials; if cancer or wobbly hedgehog syndrome was involved, the Merck Veterinary Manual's notes on hedgehog diseases explain what your vet may have seen. Find cemeteries and crematories on your local page, and see what other keepers chose on the poll results page.
Preservation
Should you consider freeze-drying your hedgehog instead?
Some keepers want to keep their hedgehog's shape, curled as if sleeping. Freeze-drying removes water from the frozen body over several months so it holds its form. At one Ohio studio, a hedgehog costs about $950[11], and one industry report says small pets typically take 3 to 6 months[12] to finish.
This is a decision to make quickly, because studios want the body frozen promptly and it rules out cremation afterwards. Ask any studio for photos of hedgehogs they've done before, since quills and the soft face are hard to get right. Our resin and display memorials guide covers preservation choices in more depth.
Keepsakes
Why quills make the keepsake almost every hedgehog leaves
Hedgehogs shed quills all their lives, and the bedding in their cage is often full of them. Gather loose quills before you clean out, rather than pulling any from the body. They keep indefinitely, look striking in a small glass vial or a resin paperweight, and are one keepsake you can have whatever you choose for the body.

Other ideas: the fleece they slept under, a tiny footprint taken in pet-safe ink, or a snapshot of the wheel they ran on at night. There are more in our memorial ideas for exotic pets. When you're ready, tell us your hedgehog's weight and town and we'll email local providers with written prices.

Questions people ask
Do hedgehog quills survive cremation?
No. Quills are made of keratin, the same protein as hair and nails, and they burn away completely. The ashes that come back are bone. If you'd like to keep some quills, collect loose ones from the cage bedding before you clean it, or ask your vet to set a few aside before the body goes to the crematory.
How deep should I bury my hedgehog?
Aim for two to three feet if your soil allows, and cover the grave with a heavy flat stone. Small graves are easily dug up by dogs, foxes and raccoons. Choose a spot away from water, drains and vegetable beds, and check your local rules and any rental agreement first.
Is it safe to bury a hedgehog that was euthanized?
It can be risky for wildlife and other pets. The euthanasia drug stays in the body and can poison an animal that digs it up and eats it. If you bury, go deep and cover the grave well, or choose cremation instead. Your vet can advise which is sensible for where you live.
How much ash does a hedgehog leave after cremation?
Usually about 10 to 30 grams, roughly a tablespoon or two, depending on size. A larger male leaves more than a small female. A provider who uses a tray for small pets is more likely to return all of it, so ask how they keep tiny remains separate.
Can I bury my hedgehog in a pot or planter?
Yes, and many renters do. Use a large, deep planter so there's plenty of soil above the body, wrap your hedgehog in cotton or put them in a cardboard box, and plant something sturdy on top. The planter can move with you if you change homes, and it keeps the grave away from digging animals.
Why would I get a necropsy for a hedgehog?
Mainly to confirm wobbly hedgehog syndrome or to identify a tumor. WHS can only be confirmed after death, and knowing the cause can help your breeder and any other hedgehogs you keep. Keep the body in the fridge, not the freezer, and ask your vet for the fee in writing before they begin.
