Las Vegas, Nevada
Who handles exotic species near Las Vegas, and how to reach them
Clark County separates the handling of dead stray and wild animals by location: freeway and ramp reports go to NDOT, other public roads to the county road division, and private property is dealt with differently. None of that covers your own pet at home. If your pet has died in a house in Summerlin or a condo off the Strip, contact your vet or a private cremation provider to arrange collection.
Las Vegas heat is extreme, with July highs around 105 and overnight lows that barely drop below 80. A pet's body must go straight into air conditioning, wrapped and packed with ice, and never be left in a car or garage even briefly. In winter the valley is mild, with lows around 40, which gives you time. Flash floods during summer monsoon storms can close roads and delay pickup.
Some Las Vegas crematories will cremate a hedgehog without blinking but hesitate over a tarantula or a venomous species, usually because they aren't sure what will remain or whether any paperwork applies. That hesitation isn't a refusal. Explain what you want and why, and ask if they've handled invertebrates or amphibians before; the honest ones will tell you plainly if another provider would suit you better.
Las Vegas's population is around 679,817, the largest of the 11 Nevada communities we cover.
Our pages for North Las Vegas (9 miles), Summerlin (10 miles) and Henderson (13 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Las Vegas as well.

Cremation in Nevada, and what it means for exotic pets
Where cremation is as routine as it is in Nevada (roughly 80.7%[1] of human funerals), pet crematories are more likely to have a viewing room or let you be present as the cremation starts. Keepers of unusual pets often find this reassuring, because it removes any doubt about whether a tiny animal was handled on its own. If you'd like to attend, ask when you book, since it usually needs a set appointment.
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) is where the Nevada figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Las Vegas tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What the Las Vegas seasons mean for exotic pets and aftercare
Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During May, June, July, August and September, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.
Axolotls and many amphibians suffer when water warms, and a Las Vegas summer can push an indoor tank well above what an axolotl tolerates. If one dies in the heat, remove it promptly, bag it without tank water and refrigerate or freeze. Don't pour the water outside or down a drain until you've spoken to your vet about disease.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Las Vegas
Few Las Vegas keepers have insurance that helps here. One pet insurer says standard policies usually cover euthanasia for a covered illness but not cremation[5], and many don't insure exotic species at all. If you do have an exotic policy, read the end-of-life section before you book; otherwise, plan to pay yourself, and use the memorial budget planner to keep the extras in proportion.

What Nevada expects after an exotic pet dies
Never flush a dead axolotl, frog, fish or invertebrate, and never empty its tank water into a garden, pond or storm drain. Amphibian chytrid fungus and other diseases spread this way, and released animals, even dead ones, can carry invasive organisms. Beyond that common-sense rule, here is what Nevada says about burial and scattering.
Clark County Animal Protection Services publishes Las Vegas's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation. The official Nevada local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Las Vegas.
We keep Nevada's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Nevada rules summary. Before a home burial in Las Vegas, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do next, in order
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their pet has died. Avoid 'went to sleep', which can make bedtime frightening.
- Offer a chance to say goodbye, should they want it. Wrapped in something soft, a small animal looks calm and at rest.
- Seal and chill the body afterwards, with the bag marked using your child's name for them.
- Let them help choose between cremation and a safe burial spot, and pick a small container or keepsake.
- Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. A small piece of paper is usually fine with most.
- Explain how long it will take before the remains are back, and circle that date on a calendar together.
- Keep routines steady, and be ready to talk about their pet as often as they need to.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
Nevada has one of the highest human cremation rates in the country, and pet cremation is the norm here too. Caliche soil and homeowners' association rules in many master-planned communities make backyard burial difficult or restricted. Ask whether any quote covers private cremation, how soon ashes will be returned and whether collection at unusual hours is possible, since many residents work nights.

Questions people ask
How does Las Vegas's weather affect exotic pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Las Vegas, with average highs around 105°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Las Vegas?
Usually yes. North Las Vegas is about 9 miles away, Summerlin is about 10 miles away and Henderson is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Nevada?
For people, yes: about 80.7%[1] of Nevada deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Las Vegas follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Do I need a permit to cremate a protected or CITES-listed pet?
Cremation within your own country usually doesn't need a new permit, but keep your existing permit and any CITES records to hand, because the provider or your permit issuer may ask. Keeping parts, preserving the body or moving remains across a border can involve separate rules. Check with the agency that issued your permit before you act.
What if a crematory in Las Vegas refuses my species?
It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Henderson. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.
Do I have to report my exotic pet's death in Nevada?
For most unregulated species, like hedgehogs or sugar gliders where they're legal, no. If you kept your pet under a state or local permit, or it's a protected species with registration papers, the permit conditions may require you to report the death or return documents. Read your permit or call the issuing wildlife agency.
