Hedgehogs, gliders, axolotls and more: cremation in North Las Vegas

North Las Vegas, Nevada

Who handles exotic species near North Las Vegas, and how to reach them

Heat is the main factor for pet aftercare in North Las Vegas. Summer highs regularly pass 105F, and a garage can be hotter than outside, so a pet's body needs to be cooled right away: wrap your pet, pack ice or frozen bottles around the body, and keep it in the coolest air-conditioned room. Even in the mild winters, don't leave it outside for long in the sun.

Backyard burial is harder here than most people expect. Much of the Las Vegas Valley has caliche, a cement-like layer in the soil that makes digging difficult, and small desert-landscaped yards leave little room. That's one reason cremation is the usual choice. Families who want to scatter ashes often think of the open desert to the north, near Tule Springs, or the cooler Spring Mountains, and should check the rules for public land first.

If your exotic pet was put to sleep at a clinic in North Las Vegas, remember that the euthanasia drug stays in the body. A fox, raccoon or neighbor's dog that digs up a small grave can be poisoned by it, which is one reason vets in mid-sized places often steer families toward cremation. If you still prefer burial at home, protect the spot with a paving slab or a heavy planter, and keep it well away from any vegetable bed.

With roughly 296,653 residents, North Las Vegas is the 3rd-largest of the 11 Nevada communities we cover. Las Vegas, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover North Las Vegas run from there.

The closest communities we cover are Las Vegas (9 miles, a larger centre), Summerlin (14 miles) and Henderson (18 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to North Las Vegas too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets

About 80.7%[1] of people in Nevada are cremated, so the infrastructure is there. What varies is experience with unusual species. Some local crematories now offer water cremation too, which returns a little more bone material than flame and appeals to amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. Ask whether it's available and what it costs for a very small pet.

The Nevada figure comes from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

North Las Vegas weather, enclosures and timing

Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During May, June, July, August and September, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.

In July, don't leave your pet's body in a car while you run errands, even in a cool box, and don't plan a garden burial in the heat of the afternoon. If the provider can't take your pet for a few days, the freezer is the safest place. Label the bag with the species, weight and date so there's no confusion later.

What exotic pet cremation costs in North Las Vegas

Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing North Las Vegas quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.

Rules and paperwork in Nevada

Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Nevada. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.

The official Nevada local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in North Las Vegas.

The rules that apply across Nevada (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Nevada page. North Las Vegas may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do next, in order

  1. If the death was sudden, look at the enclosure first: temperature, humidity, power and water quality. If you keep others of the same species, their safety comes before aftercare.
  2. Call the vet who treats your species around North Las Vegas and ask if a necropsy would tell you anything.
  3. Keep the body chilled, not frozen, until you've decided about a necropsy.
  4. Wash your hands and any tools before going back to your other animals.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, and what, honestly, will come back?
  6. Confirm everything in writing before you hand your pet over.

Honoring a pet most people never got to meet

North Las Vegas has grown fast, and many pets live in newer stucco subdivisions with small, walled backyards, alongside older neighborhoods closer to Las Vegas and apartment complexes along the main boulevards. Home collection is usually straightforward, but gated communities need a gate code and HOA rules may apply. Providers often serve the whole valley, so ask where the cremation itself takes place.

Questions people ask

Does the North Las Vegas climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 105°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Will I have to travel to Las Vegas to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Las Vegas (roughly 9 miles from North Las Vegas) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from North Las Vegas?

Usually yes. Las Vegas is about 9 miles away, Summerlin is about 14 miles away and Henderson is about 18 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Nevada attitudes to cremation compare?

Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Nevada human cremation rate at about 80.7%[1]. We show it on the North Las Vegas page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?

Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.

What if my skunk bit someone before it died?

Tell your vet before arranging cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so health officials may require rabies testing after a bite, and testing must happen before cremation. It's rare, but once the body is cremated it can't be undone. Keep the body refrigerated while you find out.
