Sunrise, Florida
Exotic pet aftercare in Sunrise: the local picture
Sunrise never freezes, and on August afternoons it sits near 91F under humid, stormy skies. When a pet dies, keeping them cool is the first task. Settle your companion in an interior room away from sunny windows, turn the cooling down and plan for pickup within a day. Hurricane season from June to November can close roads and suspend services, so reach out early if a storm is forecast.
Sunrise sits on the western edge of urban Broward County, where suburbs meet the Everglades water conservation areas along the Sawgrass Expressway. Its eastern half includes large 55-plus condo communities built in the 1970s, while the west has newer single-family subdivisions, apartments and the NHL arena. Condo associations often require notice before outside services enter. When arranging collection, give your building, gate details and the name of anyone who needs to let the driver in.
In a small community like Sunrise, a child's hedgehog or axolotl may be the only one they know of, and the loss can feel lonely for them. Involving them helps: let them choose a small item to go with their pet, decorate the box or pick where the keepsake will sit. If the cremation is done regionally and takes a week or two, tell them roughly when their pet will come home, so the wait has an end.
Sunrise's population is around 98,846, the 28th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Sunrise run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Tamarac (2 miles), Lauderhill (2 miles) and Plantation (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
Cremation is by far the most common choice for people in Florida, at about 72.5%[1]. That familiarity tends to carry over to pets, including unusual ones. Keepers here are more likely to find that a crematory already offers keepsake-size urns, small-animal trays and individual certificates, all of which matter when the animal weighed less than a pound.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Sunrise only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and your exotic pet in Sunrise
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Sunrise in August, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.
When August brings highs near 91°F, a memorial outdoors takes some planning. Hold any small burial or scattering early in the morning, water hard ground the evening before, and skip candles or lanterns if there's any fire risk. A keepsake urn can wait indoors until a cooler day in autumn; a goodbye has no deadline.

Sunrise prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip
If you're weighing preservation against cremation in Sunrise, the gap is large. One freeze-dry studio lists about $950 for a hedgehog, rat or ferret[5], several times a private cremation in the lowest weight band, and preservation takes months. Some families choose cremation and put the difference toward a custom memorial; others feel a preserved animal is worth it. Both are reasonable once you know the numbers.

Before you bury or cremate: Florida rules worth knowing
Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Florida. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Sunrise.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Sunrise's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do next, in order
- If you're away, ask your sitter to move your pet into a sealed bag and label it with the date and time they found them.
- Decide by phone: fridge or freezer. Fridge if you'll be back within a day or two and might want a necropsy; freezer if you'll be longer.
- Have them check the enclosure: temperature, water and power. A photo of the thermostat reading helps later.
- Ask them to look at every other animal too, and to ring your vet if anything seems off.
- Leave aftercare decisions until you're home, barring a health concern that can't wait. Once frozen, a small pet keeps.
- Once you're home, call a provider, describe the animal and its size, and book drop-off or collection.
Keeping a small, special pet close
Most Sunrise households live in condos or on modest subdivision lots, and this land was drained from the edge of the Everglades, so water sits just below the lawn. Home burial is seldom realistic. Cremation is how nearly everyone here handles it. If you want an urn to bring home, request an individual cremation; the communal kind, with nothing returned, is the lower-cost choice. Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Sunrise?
The closest communities we cover are Tamarac (about 2 miles), Lauderhill (about 2 miles) and Plantation (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Sunrise too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 22 miles from Sunrise) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Sunrise's weather affect exotic pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Sunrise, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Sunrise page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will a pet crematory in Sunrise cremate a hedgehog or sugar glider?
Most will, but not all have done it before. When you call, give the exact species and weight, and ask whether they cremate small animals individually, whether they use a tray to collect fine remains and how much ash they expect to return. A hedgehog usually leaves a tablespoon or two; a glider leaves a few grams.
Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
