Tamarac, Florida
Getting help with an unusual pet around Tamarac
Tamarac is a Broward County city about 24 miles north of Hialeah, stretched along Commercial Boulevard and University Drive and built largely around golf courses, canals and lakes. It has many 55+ condo and villa communities alongside newer family neighborhoods. Association rules generally forbid digging on common ground, so burial is rarely possible. Mention your community and building and any guard gate instructions when you call.
August highs in Tamarac reach around 91F, and January lows are about 58F, so a body left in a warm room will change quickly in any month. Close the blinds, set the thermostat low, and place your pet on a waterproof pad with ice wrapped in cloth. Book collection for the same day. When a tropical system is heading for Broward, call earlier rather than later.
If no provider near Tamarac will take your species, you still have choices. Some crematories in a larger centre such as Hialeah accept pets delivered by the owner, and a few accept small exotics by arrangement from another region. Communal cremation, home burial where it's safe and allowed, or preservation are all respectful alternatives if individual cremation isn't practical.
Tamarac is home to about 74,134 people, the 43rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Tamarac are based about 24 miles away in Hialeah, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Sunrise (2 miles), North Lauderdale (2 miles) and Lauderhill (3 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Tamarac routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
Cremation is the norm for people in Florida: about 72.5%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That usually means well-established pet crematories and staff who are comfortable talking about ashes. It doesn't guarantee they've handled a glider or a spider, though. A high local cremation rate makes it more likely you'll find a provider nearby; the species question still has to be asked directly.

Seasons in Tamarac and the first hours after a loss
Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During May, June, July, August, September and October, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.
Hot months (May, June, July, August, September and October) are also when enclosure failures do their damage. A power cut, a failed thermostat or an air-conditioner breakdown can overheat a room of gliders, hedgehogs or amphibians in hours. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet: it helps them decide whether a necropsy is useful, and it helps you protect the animals you still have.

Prices for small and large exotics in Tamarac
If you're weighing preservation against cremation in Tamarac, the gap is large. One freeze-dry studio lists about $950 for a hedgehog, rat or ferret[5], several times a private cremation in the lowest weight band, and preservation takes months. Some families choose cremation and put the difference toward a custom memorial; others feel a preserved animal is worth it. Both are reasonable once you know the numbers.

What Florida rules mean for an exotic pet
If you rent in Florida, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Tamarac.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Tamarac, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A practical checklist for Tamarac keepers
- For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first, then walk the enclosure or paddock looking for anything dangerous or any clue to the cause.
- Cover the body and keep it in shade, off the ground if you can, and out of reach of scavengers.
- Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
- Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, and ask whether they collect, how many people they send and what access they need.
- Check your paperwork. Many larger exotics are held under a permit or licence whose conditions can include notifying the issuer of a death.
- Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day, since a large body won't fit a home freezer.
- Ask what will come back. Unlike a glider, a large exotic returns a full urn's worth of remains, so choose the container to match.
Keeping a small, special pet close
Tamarac began in the 1960s as a retirement community and still has many older residents, though younger families have moved into its newer neighborhoods. Owners here usually keep the ashes, often on a shelf facing the canal or golf course out back. Some later scatter a little by the water. A fair question for any provider is how they keep one pet's ashes separate from another's.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Tamarac actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Hialeah, about 24 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Tamarac and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Tamarac?
Usually yes. Sunrise is about 2 miles away, North Lauderdale is about 2 miles away and Lauderhill is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Tamarac climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Tamarac follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will a pet crematory in Tamarac cremate a hedgehog or sugar glider?
Most will, but not all have done it before. When you call, give the exact species and weight, and ask whether they cremate small animals individually, whether they use a tray to collect fine remains and how much ash they expect to return. A hedgehog usually leaves a tablespoon or two; a glider leaves a few grams.
Should I put my exotic pet in the fridge or the freezer?
It depends on what you want next. For a necropsy (an animal post-mortem), refrigerate and get to the vet within a day or two, because freezing damages tissue. For freeze-drying or taxidermy, freeze promptly. For cremation only, either works; the freezer gives you more time to find the right provider in Tamarac.
