Parkland, Florida
What arranging exotic pet cremation in Parkland is like
August in Parkland peaks near 91F, and January nights settle around 58F, so the heat never fully lets up. Once your pet has died, lower the thermostat, lay them on a soft blanket on the tile or wood floor and position frozen packs, swaddled in a hand towel, near the spine. Before a hurricane, gated communities may limit entry, which can delay a collection.
Parkland families often spent weekend mornings with their animals at Pine Trails Park or Terramar Park, or on the quiet paths around neighborhood lakes. A remembrance might start with a return visit to one of those spots. Parkland's parks department sets the rules on scattering, so call before planning anything there. Plenty of households simply bring the urn back to the family room.
If no provider near Parkland will take your species, you still have choices. Some crematories in a larger centre such as Hialeah accept pets delivered by the owner, and a few accept small exotics by arrangement from another region. Communal cremation, home burial where it's safe and allowed, or preservation are all respectful alternatives if individual cremation isn't practical.
With roughly 39,186 residents, Parkland is the 79th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Hialeah, about 32 miles (52 km) away, which is where some providers serving Parkland are based.
Parkland sits within easy reach of Coral Springs (4 miles, a larger centre), Coconut Creek (5 miles) and Margate (6 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Parkland; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation in Florida, and what it means for exotic pets
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, so the infrastructure is there. What varies is experience with unusual species. Some local crematories now offer water cremation too, which returns a little more bone material than flame and appeals to amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. Ask whether it's available and what it costs for a very small pet.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Parkland tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, cold and your exotic pet in Parkland
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Parkland in August, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.
Hot months (May, June, July, August, September and October) are also when enclosure failures do their damage. A power cut, a failed thermostat or an air-conditioner breakdown can overheat a room of gliders, hedgehogs or amphibians in hours. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet: it helps them decide whether a necropsy is useful, and it helps you protect the animals you still have.

How much to budget in Parkland, from gliders to wallabies
Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. Parkland providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.

Rules and paperwork in Florida
Most of the decisions after an exotic pet dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, which Florida and your local authority may regulate, and paperwork for species that were permitted, licensed or protected. Keep any permit, purchase record or CITES certificate together before you call a provider; our notes on disclosure for unusual companions explain what they may ask.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Parkland.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Parkland's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do next, in order
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their pet has died. Avoid 'went to sleep', which can make bedtime frightening.
- Offer a chance to say goodbye if they'd like one. A small animal wrapped in a soft cloth looks peaceful.
- Seal and chill the body afterwards, labelled with the name your child used.
- Let them help choose between cremation and a safe burial spot, and pick a small container or keepsake.
- Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. A small piece of paper is usually fine with most.
- Explain how long it will take before the remains are back, and circle that date on a calendar together.
- Keep routines steady, and be ready to talk about their pet as often as they need to.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 32 miles from Parkland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Parkland?
Usually yes. Coral Springs is about 4 miles away, Coconut Creek is about 5 miles away and Margate is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Parkland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Parkland climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
What if my skunk bit someone before it died?
Tell your vet before arranging cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so health officials may require rabies testing after a bite, and testing must happen before cremation. It's rare, but once the body is cremated it can't be undone. Keep the body refrigerated while you find out.
