Seaside, California
Finding a provider for an unusual pet in Seaside
The dunes and beach at Fort Ord Dunes State Park and the trails across the old base lands give Seaside residents wide open space close to home. Many pets here shared those windy coastal days. Families often choose memorials with that coastline in mind: an urn in ocean tones, a garden stone with a sand-dollar pattern or a keepsake to carry to the water on anniversaries.
Seaside's weather is shaped by the bay's cool marine layer: September is often the warmest month, around the mid-70s, and December nights fall to about 41 degrees. Fog keeps most days mild, so heat is rarely an issue. If your pet dies at home, keep them in a cool room on a soft blanket with a wrapped ice pack while you arrange aftercare.
If no provider near Seaside will take your species, you still have choices. Some crematories in a larger centre such as San Jose accept pets delivered by the owner, and a few accept small exotics by arrangement from another region. Communal cremation, home burial where it's safe and allowed, or preservation are all respectful alternatives if individual cremation isn't practical.
About 31,636 people live in Seaside, which makes it the 209th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is San Jose, about 50 miles (81 km) away, which is where some providers serving Seaside are based.
Our pages for Monterey (3 miles), Pacific Grove (4 miles) and Marina (5 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Seaside as well.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
Where cremation is as routine as it is in California (roughly 70.5%[1] of human funerals), pet crematories are more likely to have a viewing room or let you be present as the cremation starts. Keepers of unusual pets often find this reassuring, because it removes any doubt about whether a tiny animal was handled on its own. If you'd like to attend, ask when you book, since it usually needs a set appointment.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Seaside, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seaside weather, enclosures and timing
In Seaside's gentler climate, a body will keep in the fridge for a day or two while you decide. Use that time well: talk to the vet about a necropsy, check whether your species had a permit, and call two providers. If the decision takes longer, move your pet to the freezer.
Seaside's climate is fairly mild, which gives you some breathing room. Even so, small bodies change quickly at room temperature. Within a few hours, seal your pet in a labelled bag and choose: fridge if you want a necropsy, freezer if you want preservation or need time to find a provider. After that, there's no rush at all.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Seaside
If you're weighing preservation against cremation in Seaside, the gap is large. One freeze-dry studio lists about $950 for a hedgehog, rat or ferret[5], several times a private cremation in the lowest weight band, and preservation takes months. Some families choose cremation and put the difference toward a custom memorial; others feel a preserved animal is worth it. Both are reasonable once you know the numbers.

Permits, protected species and burial in California
Never flush a dead axolotl, frog, fish or invertebrate, and never empty its tank water into a garden, pond or storm drain. Amphibian chytrid fungus and other diseases spread this way, and released animals, even dead ones, can carry invasive organisms. Beyond that common-sense rule, here is what California says about burial and scattering.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Seaside.
The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Seaside may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first day, step by step
- Tell your child simply and honestly: their pet has died. Don't say 'went to sleep'; a child can start to fear going to bed.
- Offer a chance to say goodbye if they'd like one. A small animal wrapped in a soft cloth looks peaceful.
- Seal and chill the body afterwards, labelled with the name your child used.
- Let them help choose between cremation and a safe burial spot, and pick a small container or keepsake.
- Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. A small piece of paper is usually fine with most.
- Explain how long it will take before the remains are back, and circle that date on a calendar together.
- Keep routines steady and let them talk about their pet whenever they want.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
Seaside sits on Monterey Bay between Monterey and Marina, and much of its eastern side was once the Fort Ord Army post, now home to university housing, newer subdivisions and open land. Older neighborhoods closer to the water have smaller homes and apartments. San Jose is about 50 miles away. When asking for home collection for your pet, mention whether you are in a newer development with gates or narrow streets.

Questions people ask
Does the Seaside climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 74°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Seaside?
Usually yes. Monterey is about 3 miles away, Pacific Grove is about 4 miles away and Marina is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the Seaside page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to San Jose to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in San Jose (roughly 50 miles from Seaside) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I take my exotic pet's body across state lines for cremation?
For common species like hedgehogs or gliders, driving to a crematory in a neighbouring state is usually fine. For regulated animals, such as primates or anything held under a state permit, check with the wildlife agencies in both states first. Keep the body sealed and cool, and carry your paperwork.
Can I scatter my exotic pet's ashes in my garden in Seaside?
Usually, on your own land, though check local rules for California. Cremated remains are very alkaline, around pH 11.7[7], so pouring them straight onto a plant's roots can harm it. Mix the ashes into plenty of soil or compost first, or scatter them thinly over a wide area. With a tiny exotic there's so little ash that most keepers simply mix it into a planter.
