Saying goodbye to an exotic pet in Monterey

Monterey, California

Who handles exotic species near Monterey, and how to reach them

The recreation trail along the bay, the rocky shoreline and the Monterey pines and cypress above town are the backdrop many pets here knew. Harbor seals and sea otters are a normal sight on an ordinary day out. Families often choose memorials that reflect the coast: an urn in ocean colors, a garden stone among the succulents, or a keepsake carried to the water on anniversaries.

Monterey wraps around the southern curve of Monterey Bay, from the historic adobes of Old Monterey and the working wharf to neighborhoods of cottages and pine-shaded homes climbing the hills above the harbor. San Jose is about 51 miles north. Many streets are steep, narrow or tucked among trees with limited parking, so mention access and where a vehicle can stop when arranging home collection for your pet.

A crematory that serves Monterey from further away may run collection rounds only on certain days. For a tiny pet, it's usually easier to take them to the vet, or to the crematory yourself, packed in a cool box. Ask when the next round is and whether the vet has a freezer or a cold room while you wait.

About 28,953 people live in Monterey, which makes it the 221st-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Monterey are based about 51 miles away in San Jose, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

The closest communities we cover are Pacific Grove (2 miles), Seaside (3 miles) and Carmel-by-the-Sea (3 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Monterey too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

70.5%[1]

The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual; we only apply it to this.

A exotic pet at home in Monterey

Cremation in California, and what it means for exotic pets

Where cremation is as routine as it is in California (roughly 70.5%[1] of human funerals), pet crematories are more likely to have a viewing room or let you be present as the cremation starts. Keepers of unusual pets often find this reassuring, because it removes any doubt about whether a tiny animal was handled on its own. If you'd like to attend, ask when you book, since it usually needs a set appointment.

We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Monterey, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Timing exotic pet aftercare in Monterey's climate

Monterey's climate is fairly mild, which gives you some breathing room. Even so, small bodies change quickly at room temperature. Within a few hours, seal your pet in a labelled bag and choose: fridge if you want a necropsy, freezer if you want preservation or need time to find a provider. After that, there's no rush at all.

Mild weather makes outdoor goodbyes easy for most of the year. Some keepers in Monterey plant a small shrub over a hedgehog's ashes, or set a stone in a planter for a spider's memorial. If you're burying an amphibian or anything that lived in water, choose a spot well away from ponds, streams and drains.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Monterey

Budgeting for an exotic pet's cremation in Monterey

Few Monterey keepers have insurance that helps here. One pet insurer says standard policies usually cover euthanasia for a covered illness but not cremation[5], and many don't insure exotic species at all. If you do have an exotic policy, read the end-of-life section before you book; otherwise, plan to pay yourself, and use the memorial budget planner to keep the extras in proportion.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What California expects after an exotic pet dies

Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in California. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.

To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the California level first; our California rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Monterey or your HOA adds anything.

What to do next, in order

  1. For a large exotic kept outdoors, move other animals away first, then walk the enclosure or paddock looking for anything dangerous or any clue to the cause.
  2. Cover the body and keep it in shade, off the ground if you can, and out of reach of scavengers.
  3. Note the weight and full length, including tail. A provider uses both to work out what chamber and how much handling they'll need.
  4. Call providers used to giant-breed dogs or livestock first, then find out if they'll come to you, how many staff come and what kind of access they need.
  5. Check your paperwork. Many larger exotics are held under a permit or licence whose conditions can include notifying the issuer of a death.
  6. Arrange collection or delivery the same or next day, since a large body won't fit a home freezer.
  7. Ask what will come back. Unlike a glider, a large exotic returns a full urn's worth of remains, so choose the container to match.

Ways to remember them that fit the species

Monterey's weather is cool and often foggy: September is usually the warmest month, in the mid-70s, and December nights drop to around 41. Summer mornings are commonly grey with marine layer. Heat is rarely a concern, which gives families a little more time. If your pet dies at home, keep them in a cool room on a blanket with a wrapped ice pack while you contact family and plan aftercare.

Questions people ask

Why does the Monterey page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Monterey?

Usually yes. Pacific Grove is about 2 miles away, Seaside is about 3 miles away and Carmel-by-the-Sea is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Monterey?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is September, when highs around 74°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Will I have to travel to San Jose to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in San Jose (roughly 51 miles from Monterey) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

What if my skunk bit someone before it died?

Tell your vet before arranging cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so health officials may require rabies testing after a bite, and testing must happen before cremation. It's rare, but once the body is cremated it can't be undone. Keep the body refrigerated while you find out.

Can I get a necropsy if I live somewhere small like Monterey?

Often yes, but it may mean a drive. Your local vet may be able to take samples or send the whole body to a diagnostic laboratory, or refer you to an exotics practice in a larger centre such as San Jose. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call as soon as you can, because a necropsy is most useful within a day or two.
