Getting help with an unusual pet around Barcelona
Most Barcelona pets live in apartments, from the grid of the Eixample to the narrow streets of the old town, where vehicles cannot always get close to the door. Pet aftercare providers in the Barcelona area generally collect from a flat or from the vet's clinic; tell them the floor, whether the building has a lift and whether a van can stop outside. Services commonly work in Catalan and Spanish.
Many Barcelona pets spent their lives on balconies and terraces, in sunny flats or in the courtyards at the heart of the Eixample blocks, and those small spaces often shape how owners want to remember them. An individual cremation with ashes returned gives you the most options: keeping the ashes at home, scattering part of them somewhere meaningful, or dividing them among family.
Some Barcelona crematories will cremate a hedgehog without blinking but hesitate over a tarantula or a venomous species, usually because they aren't sure what will remain or whether any paperwork applies. That hesitation isn't a refusal. Explain what you want and why, and ask if they've handled invertebrates or amphibians before; the honest ones will tell you plainly if another provider would suit you better.
With roughly 1,620,000 residents, Barcelona is one of the Catalonia communities we cover.
Families in Barcelona often end up using a provider from Palma de Mallorca (128 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
50.11%[1]
In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Spain, and what they mean for keepers
About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, a figure that has risen for years. Pet cremation has followed, but exotic pets are still a small part of any crematory's work, so the first provider you call may be unsure. Give the species and weight, explain what you hope to get back, and ask whether they'll handle your pet individually.
Source for the Spain number: Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Barcelona, so the human figure is the best local signal available.
Heat, cold and your exotic pet in Barcelona
If you don't know how warm or cold your animal room gets, a cheap min-max thermometer tells you more than any forecast. After a loss, write down the reading. It helps your vet judge whether heat or cold played a part, and it protects the animals still in your care in Barcelona.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Barcelona
Across Europe, pet cremation is priced by weight, so most exotic pets fall into the smallest band. A German consumer guide lists individual cremation at EUR 85-205 / EUR 165-375[5] (collective first, individual second), and an Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[6]. Ask Barcelona providers for the price for your pet's actual weight.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Catalonia: Catalonia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Permits, protected species and burial in Catalonia
Cremating an exotic pet is rarely regulated on its own, but a few things around it can be. If your species needed a permit while alive, the permit may ask you to report the death. Protected species listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in endangered animals, may need their records kept. Burial and scattering follow local rules. Here's what applies in Catalonia.
What to do next, in order
- If you're away, ask your sitter to move your pet into a sealed bag and label it with the date and time they found them.
- Decide by phone: fridge or freezer. The fridge is right if you're home in a day or two and a necropsy is possible; the freezer if your trip runs longer.
- Have them check the enclosure: power, water and temperature. A photo of the thermostat can help later.
- Ask them to look at every other animal and to call your vet if any seem unwell.
- Leave aftercare decisions until you're home, barring a health concern that can't wait. Once frozen, a small pet keeps.
- Once you're home, call a provider, describe the animal and its size, and book drop-off or collection.
Remembering your exotic pet in Barcelona
Barcelona summers are hot and humid, and flats without air conditioning can become very warm. If your pet dies at home in July or August, move them to the coolest room and place cool packs wrapped in towels beneath them. Winters are mild, so there is usually a little more time then. Garden burial is rarely an option in a city this dense, which is one reason cremation is the most common choice.

Questions people ask
Why does the Barcelona page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can someone collect my exotic pet from home in Barcelona?
Many Barcelona crematories offer home collection, but for a small exotic it's often simpler to deliver your pet yourself in a cool box, or leave them at your vet for the next collection round. For a large animal like a wallaby, ask for collection with a stretcher and tell them about stairs or lifts.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
Is communal cremation a bad choice for a very small pet?
Not at all. Communal cremation is handled with care; the difference is that no ashes come back. For a tarantula, a small frog or anything where little or nothing would return anyway, many keepers find communal cremation the more honest choice and spend the difference on a memorial they can keep.
What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?
A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.
Is exotic pet cremation common in Spain?
For people, about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain end in cremation, which means crematories are familiar and generally easy to find. Exotic pets are a small share of any crematory's work, though, so experience with your species still varies provider by provider. Asking the right questions matters more than the local rate.
