Finding a provider for an unusual pet in Seville
Seville's summers are among the hottest in Europe, with July and August afternoons often above 40°C and nights that barely cool. If a pet dies in that heat, get the body into an air-conditioned room with frozen packs as quickly as you can and aim for collection the same day. Winters are mild and bright, so there is more breathing room between November and March, though sunny rooms still warm up.
Many Seville households keep their pets indoors through the heat of the day and out on terraces and patios in the evenings. Pet cremation is well established in Spain, and most vets can arrange it on your behalf. Before you agree, get three things clear: that the cremation is individual, that pickup is part of the price, and roughly when the ashes will be ready, since timing varies between providers.
Some Seville crematories will cremate a hedgehog without blinking but hesitate over a tarantula or a venomous species, usually because they aren't sure what will remain or whether any paperwork applies. That hesitation isn't a refusal. Explain what you want and why, and ask if they've handled invertebrates or amphibians before; the honest ones will tell you plainly if another provider would suit you better.
With roughly 689,000 residents, Seville is the largest of the 4 Andalusia communities we cover.
Families in Seville often end up using a provider from Marbella (86 miles), Malaga (98 miles) and Granada (132 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
50.11%[1]
In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation in Spain, and what it means for exotic pets
Cremation is common but not universal in Spain, at about 50.11%[1] of people. For exotic keepers, that mix is useful: you'll find both crematories and families who bury small pets at home. Whichever feels right, think about the species. Mammals are simple; amphibians, axolotls and anything that lived in water need more care about where they end up.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Seville tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons in Seville and the first hours after a loss
If you don't know how warm or cold your animal room gets, a cheap min-max thermometer tells you more than any forecast. After a loss, write down the reading. It helps your vet judge whether heat or cold played a part, and it protects the animals still in your care in Seville.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Seville
In parts of Europe, pet insurance can help: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement of cremation costs[5]. Cover elsewhere is patchier, and exotic species are often excluded. Before you accept a quote in Seville, check any policy you hold, and ask the crematorium for the smallest-band price with and without collection from your vet.

Paperwork, disposal and burial rules in Andalusia
Cremating an exotic pet is rarely regulated on its own, but a few things around it can be. If your species needed a permit while alive, the permit may ask you to report the death. Protected species listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in endangered animals, may need their records kept. Burial and scattering follow local rules. Here's what applies in Andalusia.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in Seville
- Check that they've really died. A hedgehog that has gone cold and torpid, or a tarantula flipped over mid-molt, can look gone when it isn't. Warm them slowly if there's any doubt, and ring an exotics vet before you do anything else.
- Decide what you want first: cremation on its own, a necropsy (post-mortem) or preservation. How you keep the body depends on that choice.
- Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Write the species, weight and date. Amphibians go in without tank water.
- Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation; if it's cremation only, either works. When a necropsy matters, try to get to the vet inside a day or two.
- Gather paperwork: breeder or purchase record, plus any permit or CITES certificate.
- Call a provider with the species and weight, then ask two things: have they cremated one before, and what exactly comes back to you.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure the total covers the certificate, the container and any pickup.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Seville's historic center is a maze of narrow lanes in Santa Cruz and the Alfalfa, where many families live in old buildings arranged around interior patios, while Nervión, Los Remedios and the newer districts have apartment blocks with lifts. In the old town a vehicle may not be able to reach your door at all. When you call your vet or a provider, give precise directions and mention the nearest point where a car can stop.

Questions people ask
How do Spain attitudes to cremation compare?
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) puts the Spain human cremation rate at about 50.11%[1]. We show it on the Seville page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Seville?
The closest communities we cover are Marbella (about 86 miles), Malaga (about 98 miles) and Granada (about 132 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Seville too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I be present when my exotic pet is cremated in Seville?
Often, yes. Big crematories in Seville frequently offer an attended option, where you can see the cremation start, which many keepers of tiny animals find reassuring. It usually needs a booked time, and some providers charge for an attended cremation. Ask when you first call, and ask whether you can bring a small item, such as a favorite hide or a note, to go with your pet.
Can I bury my exotic pet in the garden in Seville?
Rules differ across Europe; some countries allow burial on your own land with conditions such as minimum depth and distance from water. For amphibians and aquatic animals, bury well away from ponds and streams or choose cremation. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you take your pet with you.
My pet died after being bought recently. Should I contact the breeder?
It's worth it. Reputable breeders of gliders, hedgehogs and axolotls often want to know about early deaths, may offer advice on a necropsy and sometimes have health guarantees that require one. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, until you've spoken to them and your vet.
Should I put my exotic pet in the fridge or the freezer?
It depends on what you want next. For a necropsy (an animal post-mortem), refrigerate and get to the vet within a day or two, because freezing damages tissue. For freeze-drying or taxidermy, freeze promptly. For cremation only, either works; the freezer gives you more time to find the right provider in Seville.
