Saying goodbye to an exotic pet in Tooele

Tooele, Utah

Getting help with an unusual pet around Tooele

Tooele Valley is dry, open and often gusty, with summer highs reaching about 94 and winter nights near 24 degrees. Heat is the chief concern after a pet dies, because a sun-warmed house on the bench heats quickly. Lay the body on a cool concrete or tile floor, spread a clean pillowcase or cloth over it, and involve a clinic or collection service before the next afternoon's heat arrives.

Tooele occupies its own basin west of the Oquirrh Mountains, roughly 27 miles from Salt Lake City, with the Stansbury Mountains beyond. Many residents commute around the north end of the Oquirrhs on I-80 or over State Route 36, so a specialty clinic or home pickup can involve real distance. Ask local clinics which aftercare providers cover Tooele Valley and whether they charge extra for travel.

If you're some distance from a vet in Tooele, the freezer is your friend. A small exotic sealed in a labelled bag keeps well for weeks, which gives you time to find a provider who'll handle the species properly. The one exception is if you want a necropsy: then refrigerate, not freeze, and get your pet to a vet within a day or two, even if that means a drive.

Tooele is home to about 42,270 people, the 23rd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Tooele are based about 27 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

The closest communities we cover are Herriman (15 miles), Magna (17 miles) and South Jordan (17 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Tooele too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

46.1%[1]

The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Merck Veterinary Manual and Merck Veterinary Manual; we only apply it to this.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets

Because cremation is the minority choice in Utah, at around 46.1%[1] for people, pet crematories can be spread thin, so it pays to plan before you need one. If your hedgehog is past three or your glider is slowing down, find a provider now: ask whether they take the species, where drop-off is and what it costs. Our pre-planning checklist for uncommon species covers the rest.

For the Utah figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Tooele rather than as pet data.

Heat, cold and your exotic pet in Tooele

Weather also affects preservation. Freeze-dry studios and taxidermists prefer bodies frozen promptly, and in a Tooele summer that means within an hour or two. In winter, don't be tempted to leave a body in a cold garage: temperatures swing, and a thawed-and-refrozen body is harder to preserve well.

If you're thinking of burying your exotic pet's ashes, or a small mammal's body where it's allowed, the ground in Tooele decides when. Many keepers here keep a frozen pet or an urn at home through winter and hold a small burial in spring. For amphibians, choose cremation or a spot well away from water whatever the season.

Prices for small and large exotics in Tooele

Containers are where a small pet's bill can surprise you in Tooele. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more[5] than a full-size wooden urn from the same crematory, because small, finely made pieces aren't cheaper to produce. If a standard urn is included, ask whether they'll swap it for a keepsake at no charge, or return the remains in a simple pouch you can move later.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Utah expects after an exotic pet dies

Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Utah. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.

Not sure which office covers Tooele? The Utah local government directory is the official list.

Start with the Utah rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Tooele's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Tooele

  1. Check that they've really died. Some exotics look lifeless when they aren't: a cold hedgehog attempting hibernation or a tarantula lying on its back to molt. If you're unsure, warm gently and call an exotics vet.
  2. Decide what you want first: a necropsy (post-mortem), preservation or cremation only. This decides how you store the body.
  3. Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Write the species, weight and date. Amphibians go in without tank water.
  4. Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation, and use either for cremation only. Aim to reach the vet within a day or two if you want a necropsy.
  5. Gather paperwork: any permit, CITES certificate, breeder or purchase record.
  6. Call a provider with the species and weight, then ask two things: have they cremated one before, and what exactly comes back to you.
  7. Get the price in writing, and make sure the total covers the certificate, the container and any pickup.

Ways to remember them that fit the species

Many Tooele homes sit on roomier lots than you find across the mountains, and a single household may keep cats, rabbits, a few chickens and a tortoise. Coyotes and raptors are part of the landscape, especially near the foothills and Settlement Canyon. When a small animal dies outdoors, gather it up quickly and keep it shut away until cremation; ashes from even a small bird can be returned in a vial.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Tooele?

The closest communities we cover are Herriman (about 15 miles), Magna (about 17 miles) and South Jordan (about 17 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Tooele too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the Tooele climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Is cremation common in Utah?

For people, yes: about 46.1%[1] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Tooele follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 27 miles from Tooele) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is there anywhere near Tooele that offers water cremation for pets?

Possibly. Pet aquamation (alkaline hydrolysis) has spread faster among pet providers than human funeral homes, but it still tends to be found near larger cities. It's legal for people in 26[7] US states, which hints at where it's easiest to find. It uses warm water and alkali instead of flame and can return a little more bone material, which helps with small animals. Ask providers directly or mention it in your request.

Will a provider near Tooele cremate a venomous or dangerous exotic?

Most will, once the animal has died, but tell them the species up front. Some providers ask for venomous invertebrates or reptiles to arrive in a sealed, rigid container so staff don't handle them directly, and some need permit details for regulated animals. If a local crematory in Tooele declines, your exotics vet can usually arrange cremation through the provider they already use.
