Highland, Utah
Exotic pet aftercare in Highland: the local picture
July afternoons near the canyon mouth reach the mid-90s, while snow can settle in from November until late February. On a hot day, carry your companion's body into the coolest part of the house, away from glass doors, and aim for pickup within hours. Cold weather gives you somewhat longer, though not a whole weekend, and snow on the canyon-mouth roads can slow a provider's arrival.
Highland sits in the northeast corner of Utah County near the mouth of American Fork Canyon, a town of spacious lots and newer family homes about 24 miles from Salt Lake City. Practices in American Fork, Lehi and Alpine are close by. Because houses here tend to sit well back from the street on large parcels, mention any gate code or long driveway when you arrange a home collection.
Word of mouth matters in a town like Highland. Local keepers' groups, reptile and exotic shows and breeders often know which provider is happy with unusual species and which one isn't. It's reasonable to ask the crematory directly, too: 'Have you cremated a hedgehog, or anything this small, before, and did you return ashes?'
With roughly 21,571 residents, Highland is the 46th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 24 miles (38 km) away, which is where some providers serving Highland are based.
Our pages for American Fork (3 miles), Lehi (4 miles, a larger centre) and Pleasant Grove (5 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Highland as well.
46.1%[1]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
Cremation covers just 46.1%[1] or so of human deaths in Utah. Where burial is the habit, some pet aftercare services offer communal cremation as their main option. If you want your exotic pet cremated alone, say 'individual' or 'private' clearly, and ask whether that means a separate chamber or a partitioned one. For a tiny animal, a separate run is the only way to be sure the remains are theirs.
The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Highland, not as a count of pets.
Planning around the Highland weather when an exotic pet dies
Weather also affects preservation. Freeze-dry studios and taxidermists prefer bodies frozen promptly, and in a Highland summer that means within an hour or two. In winter, don't be tempted to leave a body in a cold garage: temperatures swing, and a thawed-and-refrozen body is harder to preserve well.
Seasons like Highland's are hard on enclosures. In July, a failed air conditioner can overheat gliders or axolotls; in January, February, November and December, a failed heat source can chill tropical exotics fast. If a death follows an equipment failure, note the temperatures and tell your vet, and check every other animal before dealing with aftercare.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Highland
A tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill. Minimum charges, collection fees and a certificate can make a hedgehog's cremation cost as much as a cat's, even though the cremation itself uses far less time. Remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a hedgehog's fill a tablespoon. If very little ash will return, ask whether a simple pouch or small keepsake container lowers the Highland price, and compare two quotes.

What Utah rules mean for an exotic pet
Most of the decisions after an exotic pet dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, which Utah and your local authority may regulate, and paperwork for species that were permitted, licensed or protected. Keep any permit, purchase record or CITES certificate together before you call a provider; our notes on disclosure for unusual companions explain what they may ask.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Highland.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Highland or your HOA adds anything.
What to do next, in order
- Make sure your other animals are safe. Fix the heat, cooling or water problem if there was one.
- Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, which keeps delicate skin, scales or fur from coming loose.
- Call your exotics vet for advice on a necropsy; it matters most when one animal in a colony has died for no obvious reason.
- Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water; tank water shouldn't be poured outside either.
- Ask two providers for a written quote, giving species, weight and length for a larger animal.
- Arrange delivery or collection, and keep the body cool on the way.
- Let yourself grieve. You put real time and expertise into keeping an unusual animal well, and losing them is a genuine loss.
Memorials that suit an unusual companion
The Murdock Canal Trail crosses Highland on its way between Lehi and Orem, and plenty of residents spend evenings on it with their animals, Timpanogos glowing in the late light. It's a shared public path, so ashes don't belong there. With lots this size, a quiet corner of your own garden, maybe near a favorite sunning spot, is an easy and private alternative.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Highland actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 24 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Highland and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How does Highland's weather affect exotic pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Highland, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Highland?
Usually yes. American Fork is about 3 miles away, Lehi is about 4 miles away and Pleasant Grove is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[1] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Highland follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What if a crematory in Highland refuses my species?
It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Salt Lake City. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.
Can I take my exotic pet's body across state lines for cremation?
For common species like hedgehogs or gliders, driving to a crematory in a neighbouring state is usually fine. For regulated animals, such as primates or anything held under a state permit, check with the wildlife agencies in both states first. Keep the body sealed and cool, and carry your paperwork.
