Saying goodbye to an exotic pet in Cicero

Cicero, Illinois

Finding a provider for an unusual pet in Cicero

Many Cicero households are multi-generational, and a cat, a parakeet or a pair of guinea pigs may be part of daily life for grandparents and grandchildren alike. With little yard space, cremation is the usual choice. Ashes can stay in the house, perhaps on a shelf with photos, so the whole family can keep visiting their companion, and nobody has to worry about leaving a grave behind if the family moves.

Cicero shares Chicago's climate: January lows near 20, below-freezing spells from December into March, and humid July afternoons around 85. In a brick bungalow without central air, an upstairs room can stay hot long after sunset, so a basement is usually the coolest place for your pet's body in summer. In winter, a detached garage works well overnight, with the animal wrapped and placed in a sturdy box.

If you're some distance from a vet in Cicero, the freezer is your friend. A small exotic sealed in a labelled bag keeps well for weeks, which gives you time to find a provider who'll handle the species properly. The one exception is if you want a necropsy: then refrigerate, not freeze, and get your pet to a vet within a day or two, even if that means a drive.

Cicero is home to about 81,858 people, the 11th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 7 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Cicero run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Berwyn (2 miles), Oak Park (3 miles) and Brookfield (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Cicero routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

60.2%[1]

The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet

In Illinois, about 60.2%[1] of people are cremated. That places it in the middle: plenty of crematories, but not all of them used to unusual requests. Exotics vets are the best bridge, because they deal with local providers regularly and know which ones have handled small mammals, amphibians or invertebrates carefully.

The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Cicero, not as a count of pets.

Seasons in Cicero and the first hours after a loss

Some keepers in cold places like Cicero cremate first and bury the ashes, or plant a small memorial, once the ground thaws. For amphibians and axolotls it's the safer route anyway, because cremation removes any disease risk to wild frogs and salamanders. A keepsake urn can sit on a shelf all winter.

Don't leave a body outside to keep it cold in Cicero's winter, even in a box. Freezing and thawing damages tissue, wildlife can reach it and a sudden warm day undoes it all. A sealed bag in a freezer is steadier, and if a necropsy is wanted, the fridge is right for the first day or two.

Cicero prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip

Few Cicero keepers have insurance that helps here. One pet insurer says standard policies usually cover euthanasia for a covered illness but not cremation[5], and many don't insure exotic species at all. If you do have an exotic policy, read the end-of-life section before you book; otherwise, plan to pay yourself, and use the memorial budget planner to keep the extras in proportion.

What Illinois expects after an exotic pet dies

A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Illinois are about burial and scattering.

The official Illinois local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Cicero.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Illinois level first; our Illinois rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Cicero or your HOA adds anything.

From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Cicero

  1. Make sure your other animals are safe. If heating, cooling or water was the cause, put that right before anything else.
  2. Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, which keeps delicate skin, scales or fur from coming loose.
  3. Call your exotics vet and ask whether they'd recommend a necropsy, especially after an unexplained death in a colony.
  4. Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water; tank water shouldn't be poured outside either.
  5. Ask two providers for a written quote, giving species, weight and length for a larger animal.
  6. Arrange delivery or collection, and keep the body cool on the way.
  7. Let yourself grieve. You put real time and expertise into keeping an unusual animal well, and losing them is a genuine loss.

Keeping a small, special pet close

Cicero is a dense, working-class town in Cook County, sharing a border with Chicago's West Side, about seven miles from the Loop. Its streets are lined with brick bungalows, two-flats and small apartment buildings, and most yards are compact, with garages off the alley. Many Chicago-area providers will come here; ask whether they can park in the alley and carry a pet down a back stairway if you live upstairs.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Cicero actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 7 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Cicero and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cicero?

Usually yes. Berwyn is about 2 miles away, Oak Park is about 3 miles away and Brookfield is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Does the Cicero climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Is cremation common in Illinois?

For people, yes: about 60.2%[1] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Cicero follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Cicero?

Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so private cremation in Cicero usually costs about what a small cat's would: roughly $100 to $175 nationally, with communal around $45 to $75. Large exotics such as wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, a keepsake urn and a certificate can add to the total, so ask for a written, itemised quote.

Can I get a necropsy if I live somewhere small like Cicero?

Often yes, but it may mean a drive. Your local vet may be able to take samples or send the whole body to a diagnostic laboratory, or refer you to an exotics practice in a larger centre such as Chicago. Keep your pet refrigerated, not frozen, and call as soon as you can, because a necropsy is most useful within a day or two.
