Saying goodbye to an exotic pet in Bensenville

Bensenville, Illinois

What arranging exotic pet cremation in Bensenville is like

Bensenville's parks and the creek-side forest preserves of DuPage and Cook counties give many residents a green place close to home, though the preserves require permission before any scattering. Otherwise, plenty of families keep ashes in an urn on a living-room shelf, or mix a small amount into potting soil for a balcony plant, which suits apartment life and can move with you.

Bensenville sits on the western edge of O'Hare, about 17 miles from the Loop, a DuPage County village of brick ranches, bungalows and apartment buildings mixed with industrial parks and a large freight rail yard. Streets can be busy with trucks, so give a pickup provider clear directions and a good place to park. Providers working the O'Hare corridor generally treat Bensenville as part of their regular area.

If nobody within driving distance of Bensenville will cremate your species, ask a specialist provider further away whether they accept small pets by arrangement, frozen and sent in insulated packaging. Not every courier carries animal remains, so the provider should tell you which service to use and how to pack. It adds cost, but for a tiny exotic it can be the difference between an individual cremation and none.

Bensenville's population is around 18,525, the 136th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 17 miles (27 km) away, which is where some providers serving Bensenville are based.

Our pages for Franklin Park (4 miles), Addison (4 miles) and Elk Grove Village (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bensenville as well.

60.2%[1]

The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation habits in Illinois, and what they mean for keepers

Cremation has grown steadily in Illinois, where about 60.2%[1] of people now choose it, and newer pet providers have opened as demand rose. Smaller, newer operations can be more flexible about unusual species, offering a small-animal tray or an evening drop-off, while long-established ones may simply have seen more. Ask both how many animals under a pound they cremate in a typical month.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Illinois figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Bensenville tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Seasons in Bensenville and the first hours after a loss

Don't leave a body outside to keep it cold in Bensenville's winter, even in a box. Freezing and thawing damages tissue, wildlife can reach it and a sudden warm day undoes it all. A sealed bag in a freezer is steadier, and if a necropsy is wanted, the fridge is right for the first day or two.

For larger exotics kept outside, such as wallabies, a death in January, February, March and December often happens in a snowy paddock. Cold slows changes to the body but doesn't stop foxes and other scavengers, so move your animal into a shed or garage and cover it. Call a provider early in the day; rural collection in winter depends on daylight and road conditions.

Prices for small and large exotics in Bensenville

Crematories price by weight band, and the lowest band usually runs up to 10 or 30 lb, so a 150 gram glider can cost the same as a small cat. Nationally, pets up to 30 lb typically run $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. Bensenville providers will sit around those figures, more with home collection, a certificate or a special keepsake urn.

The Illinois price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Before you bury or cremate: Illinois rules worth knowing

You don't need a permit to have a hedgehog or sugar glider cremated in most places. But if your pet was a regulated species, if you want to keep parts such as a skull or quills, or if you plan to move remains across a state or national border, check first with the agency that issued your permit or with the national CITES authority. Burial rules for Illinois are below.

The official Illinois local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Bensenville.

We keep Illinois's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Illinois rules summary. Before a home burial in Bensenville, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

The first day, step by step

  1. Make sure your other animals are safe. If heating, cooling or water was the cause, put that right before anything else.
  2. Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, so fine fur, scales or skin stay together.
  3. Call your exotics vet and ask whether they'd recommend a necropsy, especially after an unexplained death in a colony.
  4. Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water; tank water shouldn't be poured outside either.
  5. Ask two providers for a written quote, telling each the species and weight, plus length for a bigger animal.
  6. Arrange delivery or collection, and keep the body cool on the way.
  7. Let yourself grieve. You put real time and expertise into keeping an unusual animal well, and losing them is a genuine loss.

Remembering your exotic pet in Bensenville

Bensenville summers peak near 85, while January nights settle around 19, and frost lingers in the soil until March. Apartment dwellers without a garage or basement have fewer cool places to hold a body, so if you live in one of the village's apartment buildings, ask for same-day collection whatever the season. In a house, an unheated garage works in winter; in July, air conditioning and cold packs are what count.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 17 miles from Bensenville) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Does the Bensenville climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bensenville?

Usually yes. Franklin Park is about 4 miles away, Addison is about 4 miles away and Elk Grove Village is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Illinois attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Illinois human cremation rate at about 60.2%[1]. We show it on the Bensenville page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?

Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.

Do I have to report my exotic pet's death in Illinois?

For most unregulated species, like hedgehogs or sugar gliders where they're legal, no. If you kept your pet under a state or local permit, or it's a protected species with registration papers, the permit conditions may require you to report the death or return documents. Read your permit or call the issuing wildlife agency.
