Wabasso, Florida
Exotic pet aftercare in Wabasso: the local picture
Summers in Wabasso peak around 91 degrees in August, and winter lows seldom dip much below the low 50s, so there's no cold season to lean on after a death at home. Carry your pet somewhere with the air conditioning running, lay them on a folded sheet over a hard floor, and slide a cold pack in a pillowcase beneath the neck and chest. Aim to have collection arranged within hours rather than overnight.
Wabasso sits close to Pelican Island, the first national wildlife refuge in the United States, and herons, pelicans and ospreys are everyday sights along this stretch of lagoon. Families who watched those birds with a pet beside them on the porch sometimes want the memorial to face the water. A small container of ashes on a sill, or a native planting in the yard, keeps that view part of the tribute.
In a smaller place like Wabasso, the local vet may never have arranged cremation for a hedgehog or an axolotl, and the regional crematory they use may be an hour or more away, often somewhere around Port St. Lucie. That doesn't mean it can't be done. It means you should give the species and weight up front, and expect the ashes, if any, to take a little longer to come back.
With roughly 1,000 residents, Wabasso is the 223rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Port St. Lucie, roughly 34 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Wabasso run from there.
Our pages for Orchid (3 miles), Winter Beach (3 miles) and Sebastian (5 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Wabasso as well.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
With cremation at roughly 72.5%[1] for people in Florida, pet providers here often sell bundles built around a cat or dog: a wooden urn, a paw print, a certificate. For an exotic pet, parts of that bundle may not fit. A glider's paw print is barely visible, and a standard urn dwarfs a hedgehog's remains. Ask whether you can drop the items you won't use and pay only for the cremation and a small container.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Wabasso, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning around the Wabasso weather when an exotic pet dies
Many Wabasso keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 91°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Wabasso in August, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Wabasso
Expect the total in Wabasso to depend on four things: the weight band, individual or communal, how your pet reaches the provider and what the remains come back in. If a necropsy comes first, that's a separate vet or laboratory fee, and it adds time to the usual return of 5-10 days[5]. The ranges below are typical US prices; ask any provider for a written, itemised total before you agree.

What Florida expects after an exotic pet dies
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Florida are about burial and scattering.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Wabasso's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
The first day, step by step
- Check that they've really died. Some exotics look lifeless when they aren't: a cold hedgehog attempting hibernation or a tarantula lying on its back to molt. If you're unsure, warm gently and call an exotics vet.
- Decide what you want first: cremation on its own, a necropsy (post-mortem) or preservation. How you keep the body depends on that choice.
- Seal your pet in a labelled bag. Write the species, weight and date. Amphibians go in without tank water.
- Refrigerate for a necropsy, freeze for preservation, and use either for cremation only. Aim to reach the vet within a day or two if you want a necropsy.
- Gather paperwork: any permit, CITES certificate, breeder or purchase record.
- Call a provider with the species and weight, and ask whether they've handled it before and what will be returned.
- Get the price in writing, including collection, the container and any certificate.
Keeping a small, special pet close
Wabasso is an unincorporated community on the Indian River County mainland, set between Sebastian and Vero Beach where the Wabasso Causeway crosses the Indian River Lagoon to the barrier island. Houses range from older homes on shaded streets to properties carved out of former citrus groves. Treasure Coast providers usually include Wabasso in their area, though Port St. Lucie, about 34 miles south, is far enough that some quote extra mileage.

Questions people ask
Why does the Wabasso page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Port St. Lucie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Port St. Lucie (roughly 34 miles from Wabasso) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Wabasso?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Wabasso?
Usually yes. Orchid is about 3 miles away, Winter Beach is about 3 miles away and Sebastian is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Do I have to report my exotic pet's death in Florida?
For most unregulated species, like hedgehogs or sugar gliders where they're legal, no. If you kept your pet under a state or local permit, or it's a protected species with registration papers, the permit conditions may require you to report the death or return documents. Read your permit or call the issuing wildlife agency.
How much ash will my axolotl or frog leave?
Very little. Amphibians are mostly water and have light skeletons, so a large axolotl may leave a gram or two and a small frog possibly nothing visible. Many keepers still choose individual cremation because it means their animal was treated alone and with care. Ask the provider in advance so you know what to expect.
