Saying goodbye to an exotic pet in Panama City

Panama City, Florida

How exotic pet cremation works around Panama City

Life in Panama City revolves around the water, from the St. Andrews neighborhood marina to the bayous that cut into town. Some families scatter a portion of ashes on the bay or along a quiet shoreline, where rules allow, and keep the rest at home. Others choose a garden plant or a small stone under a live oak. Rebuilding after the 2018 storm has made many residents value a keepsake they can carry if they ever need to leave.

Panama City is the Bay County seat, set on St. Andrew Bay in the Florida Panhandle, and it runs on Central Time, unlike most of the state. It is a fair distance from any big metro, with Tallahassee roughly two hours east, so pet aftercare here is usually arranged through providers based in Bay County or who cover the Panhandle. Ask where the cremation itself takes place and how long the ashes will take to come back.

Exotics vets are scarce outside larger centres, so many families in and around Panama City drive to a larger centre such as Panama City for specialist care. If your pet died after treatment there, that practice is usually the best place to arrange aftercare too, since they know which crematory handles unusual species. Ask whether they can hold your pet until the provider's next collection.

Panama City is home to about 37,806 people, the 81st-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Destin (52 miles), Fort Walton Beach (60 miles) and Dothan (75 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets

In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, families rarely feel they have to justify wanting ashes back, even for a hedgehog. Competition between providers also helps exotic keepers: a crematory that wants the business is more likely to try a small-animal tray or talk you through what will realistically remain.

The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Timing exotic pet aftercare in Panama City's climate

If you're planning to bury your pet or their ashes in Panama City, the season matters: frozen ground in winter, dry ground in summer. For amphibians and aquatic pets, choose a spot far from water or choose cremation, because some amphibian diseases spread through water to wild animals.

Panama City prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip

A tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill. Minimum charges, collection fees and a certificate can make a hedgehog's cremation cost as much as a cat's, even though the cremation itself uses far less time. Remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a hedgehog's fill a tablespoon. If very little ash will return, ask whether a simple pouch or small keepsake container lowers the Panama City price, and compare two quotes.

The Florida price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permits, protected species and burial in Florida

Pet cremation is lightly regulated in most places, and few laws say what a provider must put in writing. That makes your own paperwork the safeguard. Ask for a signed form naming the species, the weight, individual or communal and what will be returned, and keep it with the certificate. After that, what's left to check in Florida is where burial and scattering are allowed.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Panama City may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Step by step in Panama City

  1. If the death was sudden, look at the enclosure first: temperature, humidity, power and water quality. If you keep others of the same species, their safety comes before aftercare.
  2. Call the vet who treats your species in or near Panama City, and ask whether a necropsy is worthwhile.
  3. Keep the body chilled, not frozen, until you've decided about a necropsy.
  4. Wash your hands and any tools you used before returning to the rest of your animals.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, and what, honestly, will come back?
  6. Confirm everything in writing and only then let your pet go.

Remembering your exotic pet in Panama City

Panama City summers are long, humid and hot, but the Panhandle does get occasional winter frosts, which surprises people who have moved from further south. In the warm months, keep a pet who has died somewhere cool, on a towel with ice packs nearby, and aim for collection the same day. Hurricane season matters here too: after Hurricane Michael in 2018, many families learned how quickly roads and services can shut down.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Panama City?

Usually yes. Destin is about 52 miles away, Fort Walton Beach is about 60 miles away and Dothan is about 75 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Florida?

For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Panama City follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?

Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.

Should I put my exotic pet in the fridge or the freezer?

It depends on what you want next. For a necropsy (an animal post-mortem), refrigerate and get to the vet within a day or two, because freezing damages tissue. For freeze-drying or taxidermy, freeze promptly. For cremation only, either works; the freezer gives you more time to find the right provider in Panama City.

Can someone collect my wallaby or other large exotic in Panama City?

Some providers can, especially those that also handle large dogs or farm animals. Give the weight and the full length, including tail, so they can send enough people and check their chamber fits. If they can't collect, you may need to deliver by car or trailer. Ask about mileage if the provider is based near Panama City.

What if my skunk bit someone before it died?

Tell your vet before arranging cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so health officials may require rabies testing after a bite, and testing must happen before cremation. It's rare, but once the body is cremated it can't be undone. Keep the body refrigerated while you find out.
