Meadow Woods, Florida
Who handles exotic species near Meadow Woods, and how to reach them
Meadow Woods is a large unincorporated community in south Orange County, about 12 miles south of downtown Orlando, wedged between Orlando International Airport, Lake Nona and the Osceola County line, with State Road 417 running along its edge. Neighborhoods are mostly single-family subdivisions and townhomes built from the 1980s onward, and Spanish is heard as often as English on many streets. Orlando-area providers reach Meadow Woods quickly, and many can talk you through things in Spanish.
Most homes in Meadow Woods have compact yards, many backing onto retention ponds, and the high water table plus HOA rules make backyard burial a poor fit. Families usually choose cremation instead. Some keep the ashes beside family photos, a candle or a religious image, while others add a small portion to the soil of a potted plant, like a hibiscus or a croton, on the patio.
Word of mouth matters in a town like Meadow Woods. Local keepers' groups, reptile and exotic shows and breeders often know which provider is happy with unusual species and which one isn't. It's reasonable to ask the crematory directly, too: 'Have you cremated a hedgehog, or anything this small, before, and did you return ashes?'
About 28,000 people live in Meadow Woods, which makes it the 96th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Meadow Woods are based about 12 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Southchase (2 miles), Buenaventura Lakes (3 miles) and Taft (4 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Florida thinks about cremation
With cremation at roughly 72.5%[1] for people in Florida, pet providers here often sell bundles built around a cat or dog: a wooden urn, a paw print, a certificate. For an exotic pet, parts of that bundle may not fit. A glider's paw print is barely visible, and a standard urn dwarfs a hedgehog's remains. Ask whether you can drop the items you won't use and pay only for the cremation and a small container.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Meadow Woods, not as a count of pets.
What the Meadow Woods seasons mean for exotic pets and aftercare
Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Meadow Woods in July, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.
Hot months (May, June, July, August and September) are also when enclosure failures do their damage. A power cut, a failed thermostat or an air-conditioner breakdown can overheat a room of gliders, hedgehogs or amphibians in hours. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet: it helps them decide whether a necropsy is useful, and it helps you protect the animals you still have.

Budgeting for an exotic pet's cremation in Meadow Woods
Expect the total in Meadow Woods to depend on four things: the weight band, individual or communal, how your pet reaches the provider and what the remains come back in. If a necropsy comes first, that's a separate vet or laboratory fee, and it adds time to the usual return of 5-10 days[5]. The ranges below are typical US prices; ask any provider for a written, itemised total before you agree.

Rules and paperwork in Florida
Cremating an exotic pet is rarely regulated on its own, but a few things around it can be. If your species needed a permit while alive, the permit may ask you to report the death. Protected species listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in endangered animals, may need their records kept. Burial and scattering follow local rules. Here's what applies in Florida.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Meadow Woods can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Meadow Woods
- Tell your child simply and honestly: their pet has died. Don't say 'went to sleep'; a child can start to fear going to bed.
- Offer a chance to say goodbye if they'd like one. A small animal wrapped in a soft cloth looks peaceful.
- Seal and chill the body afterwards, with the bag marked using your child's name for them.
- Let them help choose whether it's cremation or a safe place to bury, and let them pick out a keepsake or a little container.
- Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. Many allow a small paper item.
- Explain how long it will take before the remains are back, and circle that date on a calendar together.
- Keep routines steady, and be ready to talk about their pet as often as they need to.
Remembering your exotic pet in Meadow Woods
Meadow Woods summers bring highs around 92F, sticky nights and near-daily thunderstorms, while January can dip to around 50F. On a hot day, if your pet passes indoors, clear a space on a cool floor away from windows, rest them on a thick towel and set frozen packs wrapped in cloth close by. Call for pickup that afternoon, or ask your vet whether the clinic can keep them overnight.

Questions people ask
How does Meadow Woods's weather affect exotic pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Meadow Woods, with average highs around 92°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 12 miles from Meadow Woods) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Meadow Woods?
Usually yes. Southchase is about 2 miles away, Buenaventura Lakes is about 3 miles away and Taft is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Meadow Woods page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How long until I get my exotic pet's ashes back in Meadow Woods?
Many families get private cremation remains back within about one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[5] is commonly quoted. In a large city it can be quicker; where pets travel to a regional crematory near Orlando, it may take longer. If a necropsy comes first, add the lab's time. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Will a pet crematory in Meadow Woods cremate a hedgehog or sugar glider?
Most will, but not all have done it before. When you call, give the exact species and weight, and ask whether they cremate small animals individually, whether they use a tray to collect fine remains and how much ash they expect to return. A hedgehog usually leaves a tablespoon or two; a glider leaves a few grams.
