Key West, Florida
Getting help with an unusual pet around Key West
Key West sits at the far end of the Overseas Highway in Monroe County, roughly 160 miles and several hours' drive from Miami, and that distance shapes pet aftercare here more than anything else. Homes are mostly tightly packed conch cottages, apartments and condos in Old Town and New Town, plus Navy housing. Ask any provider whether cremation happens in the Keys or on the mainland, and how long the ashes take to come back down US 1.
Key West is famous for its animals, from the six-toed cats at the Hemingway Home to the chickens that roam the streets. Burial is difficult here, since the island is coral rock with water close beneath and even the city cemetery uses above-ground tombs, so most families choose cremation. A little ash scattered at sea off the island, or a potted bougainvillea on the porch, makes a fitting memorial.
Larger exotics are the hardest to place in a town like Key West. A 40 lb wallaby or a big emu may exceed what a small-animal crematory can lift or fit, and you may need a provider who also handles large dogs or farm animals. Ask about the chamber size and handling equipment, give length as well as weight, and ask whether you'll need to deliver.
With roughly 24,999 residents, Key West is the 103rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Homestead (105 miles, a larger centre), Naples (110 miles) and Cutler Bay (115 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Key West too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for keepers
With cremation at roughly 72.5%[1] for people in Florida, pet providers here often sell bundles built around a cat or dog: a wooden urn, a paw print, a certificate. For an exotic pet, parts of that bundle may not fit. A glider's paw print is barely visible, and a standard urn dwarfs a hedgehog's remains. Ask whether you can drop the items you won't use and pay only for the cremation and a small container.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons in Key West and the first hours after a loss
When August brings highs near 91°F, a memorial outdoors takes some planning. Hold any small burial or scattering early in the morning, water hard ground the evening before, and skip candles or lanterns if there's any fire risk. A keepsake urn can wait indoors until a cooler day in autumn; a goodbye has no deadline.
Many Key West keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 91°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Key West
If you're weighing preservation against cremation in Key West, the gap is large. One freeze-dry studio lists about $950 for a hedgehog, rat or ferret[5], several times a private cremation in the lowest weight band, and preservation takes months. Some families choose cremation and put the difference toward a custom memorial; others feel a preserved animal is worth it. Both are reasonable once you know the numbers.

Paperwork, disposal and burial rules in Florida
Never flush a dead axolotl, frog, fish or invertebrate, and never empty its tank water into a garden, pond or storm drain. Amphibian chytrid fungus and other diseases spread this way, and released animals, even dead ones, can carry invasive organisms. Beyond that common-sense rule, here is what Florida says about burial and scattering.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Key West.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Key West can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in Key West
- Note what happened. Jot down when it was, what the enclosure readings were and anything you'd noticed, in case you later want a vet's opinion or a necropsy.
- Chill your pet in a sealed, labelled bag inside the first hour or two, and faster than that if it's hot.
- Choose your path: cremation on its own, a necropsy followed by cremation, preservation, or a burial if it's both legal and safe there.
- Find a provider who says yes clearly. Our questions to ask an exotic pet cremation provider help.
- Check the container size. Most standard pet urns are far too big for a glider or hedgehog; a keepsake urn usually fits.
- Collect or receive the remains, and check the label and certificate name the right species.
Ways to remember them that fit the species
Key West is frost-free, with January lows around 66F and August highs above 90F, so there is no cool season to buy extra time. As soon as your pet has died, get them into air conditioning straight away, lay them on a towel, surround them with ice packs wrapped in cloth, and find out if your clinic can hold them while collection is arranged. In a hurricane evacuation, the whole chain can empty out, so plan early.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Key West?
The closest communities we cover are Homestead (about 105 miles), Naples (about 110 miles) and Cutler Bay (about 115 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Key West too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Key West page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Key West?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How much ash will my axolotl or frog leave?
Very little. Amphibians are mostly water and have light skeletons, so a large axolotl may leave a gram or two and a small frog possibly nothing visible. Many keepers still choose individual cremation because it means their animal was treated alone and with care. Ask the provider in advance so you know what to expect.
How do I know I got my own pet's ashes back?
Ask how the provider keeps track of each animal. Reliable providers attach an ID disc that stays with your pet from intake to return, use a separate chamber or tray for individual cremations, and record each step. For a tiny exotic, check that only one animal is cremated at a time. A certificate that names the species and weight, not just 'pet', is another good sign.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
