Saying goodbye to an exotic pet in Hernando

Hernando, Florida

How exotic pet cremation works around Hernando

Hernando is an unincorporated Citrus County community just north of Inverness along US 41, where homes sit on generous lots between pine woods and the lakes of the Tsala Apopka chain. Many residents are retirees, and some live on dirt or shell roads. Orlando is over an hour away, so collection often comes from providers based in Ocala or elsewhere in the region; ask about mileage fees at the start.

Citrus County has a mild winter by national standards, with January lows around 46F, which is cool enough that a pet's body stays safer for a few hours in an unheated room. Summers are long and humid, peaking near 92F. From May through September, keep your animal indoors in air conditioning and try to have your pet collected, or taken to your vet, the same day.

In a smaller place like Hernando, the local vet may never have arranged cremation for a hedgehog or an axolotl, and the regional crematory they use may be an hour or more away, often somewhere around Orlando. That doesn't mean it can't be done. It means you should give the species and weight up front, and expect the ashes, if any, to take a little longer to come back.

Hernando's population is around 9,000, the 166th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 65 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hernando run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Inverness (5 miles), Beverly Hills (5 miles) and Dunnellon (12 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Hernando routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

72.5%[1]

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider

About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, so the infrastructure is there. What varies is experience with unusual species. Some local crematories now offer water cremation too, which returns a little more bone material than flame and appeals to amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. Ask whether it's available and what it costs for a very small pet.

That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Hernando only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Planning around the Hernando weather when an exotic pet dies

In July, don't leave your pet's body in a car while you run errands, even in a cool box, and don't plan a garden burial in the heat of the afternoon. If the provider can't take your pet for a few days, the freezer is the safest place. Label the bag with the species, weight and date so there's no confusion later.

Heat matters for the drive too. If you're taking a small exotic to a vet or crematory across Hernando in July, pack the sealed bag in a cool box with ice packs around (not directly against) it, and go straight there. For a necropsy, chilled is right; frozen and thawed makes the pathologist's job harder.

Hernando prices: what you pay for, and what you can skip

A tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill. Minimum charges, collection fees and a certificate can make a hedgehog's cremation cost as much as a cat's, even though the cremation itself uses far less time. Remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a hedgehog's fill a tablespoon. If very little ash will return, ask whether a simple pouch or small keepsake container lowers the Hernando price, and compare two quotes.

What Florida expects after an exotic pet dies

If you rent in Florida, your lease can matter as much as the law. Many tenancy agreements forbid digging or burying anything in the garden, and a landlord can object even where burial would otherwise be legal. Cremation avoids the question and lets your pet's remains move with you. If you own your home, the burial and scattering notes below apply.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Hernando may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

A practical checklist for Hernando keepers

  1. Move your pet out of the enclosure into a clean, sealed bag. Leave heating and lighting running for any tank-mates.
  2. Label the bag with your name, today's date, the weight and the species.
  3. If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, tell the vet before arranging cremation. Testing may be needed first.
  4. Store the body: fridge if a necropsy will happen in the next day or two, freezer if it'll be longer.
  5. Check your paperwork if the species needed a permit or CITES records, and whether you need to report the death.
  6. Book the cremation once you've found a provider who's confident with the species, and ask for a certificate naming it.

Keeping a small, special pet close

The Withlacoochee State Trail runs through Hernando on an old rail line, and many families have spent years on it with an animal trotting or riding along in a basket. Some want to honor a pet along the trail or beside Lake Hernando. State lands and lake shores come with their own rules on ashes, so confirm first; a visit without scattering can still be meaningful.

Questions people ask

Does the Hernando climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Where are the providers that serve Hernando actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 65 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Hernando and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is cremation common in Florida?

For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hernando follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hernando?

Usually yes. Inverness is about 5 miles away, Beverly Hills is about 5 miles away and Dunnellon is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Do I have to report my exotic pet's death in Florida?

For most unregulated species, like hedgehogs or sugar gliders where they're legal, no. If you kept your pet under a state or local permit, or it's a protected species with registration papers, the permit conditions may require you to report the death or return documents. Read your permit or call the issuing wildlife agency.

Does pet insurance pay for exotic pet cremation?

Usually not. Most standard policies treat cremation as outside cover, even when they pay for a medically necessary euthanasia[6], and plenty of insurers won't cover exotic species in the first place. A few add-ons pay toward cremation or keepsakes. If you hold an exotic pet policy, look through its end-of-life wording before booking, and keep itemized receipts in case a claim is possible.
