DeLand, Florida
Who handles exotic species near DeLand, and how to reach them
Being inland, DeLand runs a little colder in winter than the Volusia beaches: January nights near 45F and an occasional frost on the lawn. July still reaches about 91F, and summers are sticky. In warm months, chill the body quickly by moving your pet to an air-conditioned room, resting them on a folded quilt and placing wrapped ice along the back. On a cold winter night a closed, unheated room can buy extra time.
DeLand is the Volusia County seat, an inland college town that grew up around Stetson University and a historic downtown of brick storefronts along Woodland Boulevard. Homes range from old frame bungalows under live oaks near campus to newer subdivisions on the edges and rural lots running out toward the St. Johns River. If you live on a country road where mailboxes are hard to spot, describe the driveway, a nearby landmark or the color of your gate.
Rural keepers around DeLand often have land, and home burial of a small mammal is common. Bury deep enough that wildlife won't dig, away from wells and streams, and check local rules first. For amphibians, axolotls and anything that lived in water, bury well away from ponds and ditches or choose cremation, because amphibian diseases travel through water to wild populations.
With roughly 46,346 residents, DeLand is the 67th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve DeLand are based about 34 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
DeLand sits within easy reach of Deltona (9 miles, a larger centre), DeBary (10 miles) and Sanford (16 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from DeLand; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation in Florida, and what it means for exotic pets
Cremation accounts for roughly 72.5%[1] of funerals for people in Florida, and many families here scatter ashes somewhere meaningful. With an exotic pet, the amount may be too small to scatter at all: a sugar glider's remains could fit in a thimble. Some keepers mix them into a planter's soil or keep them whole in a locket instead. There's no wrong choice, but it helps to know before you book roughly what you'll receive.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in DeLand tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
DeLand weather, enclosures and timing
Many DeLand keepers run enclosures with heat lamps, mats and misting, and summer highs near 91°F put extra strain on all of it. After a loss, check the rest of the room: temperatures, humidity and equipment. If more than one animal is unwell, call the vet before you do anything with the body, because they may want to examine it.
Flies and ants find a body quickly in hot weather, especially in a reptile room or a screened porch. During May, June, July, August and September, don't leave your pet in the enclosure while you make calls: move them straight into a sealed bag and then the fridge or freezer. For invertebrates such as tarantulas, check the enclosure for mites or other pests before it's used for another animal.

What exotic pet cremation costs in DeLand
Few DeLand keepers have insurance that helps here. One pet insurer says standard policies usually cover euthanasia for a covered illness but not cremation[5], and many don't insure exotic species at all. If you do have an exotic policy, read the end-of-life section before you book; otherwise, plan to pay yourself, and use the memorial budget planner to keep the extras in proportion.

Paperwork, disposal and burial rules in Florida
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Florida are about burial and scattering.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers DeLand.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat DeLand's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do next, in order
- Make sure your other animals are safe. If heating, cooling or water was the cause, put that right before anything else.
- Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, so fine fur, scales or skin stay together.
- Call your exotics vet and ask whether they'd recommend a necropsy, especially after an unexplained death in a colony.
- Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water; tank water shouldn't be poured outside either.
- Ask two providers for a written quote, telling each the species and weight, plus length for a bigger animal.
- Arrange delivery or collection, and keep the body cool on the way.
- Let yourself grieve. You put real time and expertise into keeping an unusual animal well, and losing them is a genuine loss.
Ways to remember them that fit the species
West Volusia is river country. Families here spend weekends along the St. Johns, at Blue Spring State Park, where manatees crowd the spring run in winter, or across the water at Hontoon Island. Those places carry memories, but state parks need permission for any scattering, so ask the park office first. Many DeLand families bring the ashes home and simply revisit the river on the anniversary.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with DeLand?
The closest communities we cover are Deltona (about 9 miles), DeBary (about 10 miles) and Sanford (about 16 miles). Providers based in those places often serve DeLand too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 34 miles from DeLand) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the DeLand page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in DeLand?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Do I need a permit to cremate a protected or CITES-listed pet?
Cremation within your own country usually doesn't need a new permit, but keep your existing permit and any CITES records to hand, because the provider or your permit issuer may ask. Keeping parts, preserving the body or moving remains across a border can involve separate rules. Check with the agency that issued your permit before you act.
Will a provider near DeLand cremate a venomous or dangerous exotic?
Most will, once the animal has died, but tell them the species up front. Some providers ask for venomous invertebrates or reptiles to arrive in a sealed, rigid container so staff don't handle them directly, and some need permit details for regulated animals. If a local crematory in DeLand declines, your exotics vet can usually arrange cremation through the provider they already use.
