Coral Gables, Florida
Getting help with an unusual pet around Coral Gables
South Miami-Dade stays warm all year, with August highs around 91F and January lows near 61F, so there is no cool season that buys extra time. Place your pet in an air-conditioned room on a clean sheet and tuck ice, sealed in bags and wrapped in a towel, around the torso. From June to November, storms can bring down the city's big trees and leave streets blocked for days.
Coral Gables is a planned city just southwest of downtown Miami, known for Mediterranean Revival houses, coral rock walls and a dense canopy of banyans and live oaks. Many households have a house with a garden; others rent apartments near Miracle Mile or the University of Miami campus. Some waterfront neighborhoods have guard gates, so give the collection service the gate procedure and any guest code ahead of time.
Exotics vets are scarce outside larger centres, so many families in and around Coral Gables drive to a larger centre such as Miami for specialist care. If your pet died after treatment there, that practice is usually the best place to arrange aftercare too, since they know which crematory handles unusual species. Ask whether they can hold your pet until the provider's next collection.
Coral Gables's population is around 49,578, the 64th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Miami, about 7 miles (11 km) away, which is where some providers serving Coral Gables are based.
Families in Coral Gables often end up using a provider from Pinecrest (3 miles), Palmetto Bay (6 miles) and Miami (7 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why local cremation habits matter for your exotic pet
Cremation is the norm for people in Florida: about 72.5%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That usually means well-established pet crematories and staff who are comfortable talking about ashes. It doesn't guarantee they've handled a glider or a spider, though. A high local cremation rate makes it more likely you'll find a provider nearby; the species question still has to be asked directly.

Timing exotic pet aftercare in Coral Gables's climate
In August, don't leave your pet's body in a car while you run errands, even in a cool box, and don't plan a garden burial in the heat of the afternoon. If the provider can't take your pet for a few days, the freezer is the safest place. Label the bag with the species, weight and date so there's no confusion later.
Axolotls and many amphibians suffer when water warms, and a Coral Gables summer can push an indoor tank well above what an axolotl tolerates. If one dies in the heat, remove it promptly, bag it without tank water and refrigerate or freeze. Don't pour the water outside or down a drain until you've spoken to your vet about disease.

What exotic pet cremation costs in Coral Gables
Few Coral Gables keepers have insurance that helps here. One pet insurer says standard policies usually cover euthanasia for a covered illness but not cremation[5], and many don't insure exotic species at all. If you do have an exotic policy, read the end-of-life section before you book; otherwise, plan to pay yourself, and use the memorial budget planner to keep the extras in proportion.

What Florida rules mean for an exotic pet
Two kinds of rules can touch an exotic pet's aftercare in Florida. The first are ordinary burial and scattering rules, the same as for a dog or cat. The second are species rules: permits, protected-species records and, for amphibians and aquatic animals, a general duty not to release anything, alive or dead, that could spread disease or invasive species into the wild.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Coral Gables.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Coral Gables can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Step by step in Coral Gables
- Move your pet out of the enclosure and into a clean bag that seals. If anyone else lives in that tank, keep the lights and heat on for them.
- Label the bag with your name, today's date, the weight and the species.
- If anyone was bitten or scratched recently, say so to the vet before you book any cremation, because tests might have to come first.
- Store the body: fridge if a necropsy will happen in the next day or two, freezer if it'll be longer.
- Check your paperwork where a permit or CITES record applied to the species, and find out if the death has to be reported.
- Book the cremation once you've found a provider who's confident with the species, and ask for a certificate naming it.
Honoring a pet most people never got to meet
Families here often spent quiet afternoons with their pets beneath the Gables' trees, along the edges of the Granada golf course or near the bay at Matheson Hammock. Retracing one of those routes, slowly and alone for the first time, often opens the first real conversation about the loss. County and city parks have their own rules on scattering, so ask before you release ashes. Many people keep the remains at home near family photos.

Questions people ask
Does the Coral Gables climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Where are the providers that serve Coral Gables actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Miami, about 7 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Coral Gables and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Coral Gables?
Usually yes. Pinecrest is about 3 miles away, Palmetto Bay is about 6 miles away and Miami is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Coral Gables page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How long until I get my exotic pet's ashes back in Coral Gables?
Many families get private cremation remains back within about one to two weeks, and 5-10 days[7] is commonly quoted. In a large city it can be quicker; where pets travel to a regional crematory near Miami, it may take longer. If a necropsy comes first, add the lab's time. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
My pet died after being bought recently. Should I contact the breeder?
It's worth it. Reputable breeders of gliders, hedgehogs and axolotls often want to know about early deaths, may offer advice on a necropsy and sometimes have health guarantees that require one. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, until you've spoken to them and your vet.
