New Britain, Connecticut
Finding a provider for an unusual pet in New Britain
New Britain, the Hardware City, grew up around tool and lock factories, and its housing still reflects that era: triple-deckers, brick two-families and compact capes on tight lots, with Central Connecticut State University on the north side. Cats, birds and small pets suit these homes well. Hartford is about ten miles away, and providers from surrounding Hartford County towns can often collect from an upstairs apartment if you ask.
Walnut Hill Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted's firm, rises above downtown New Britain with a view across the city and a World War I memorial tower at the top. Many residents have spent evenings there, and some choose it later as a place to sit and remember a pet. Parks usually do not allow scattering, so a quiet visit with a photo is the simpler way to mark the moment.
Word of mouth matters in a town like New Britain. Local keepers' groups, reptile and exotic shows and breeders often know which provider is happy with unusual species and which one isn't. It's reasonable to ask the crematory directly, too: 'Have you cremated a hedgehog, or anything this small, before, and did you return ashes?'
About 76,286 people live in New Britain, which makes it the 8th-largest of the 23 Connecticut communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve New Britain are based about 65 miles away in Worcester, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in New Britain often end up using a provider from Bristol (8 miles), Hartford (8 miles) and Meriden (10 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
66.1%[1]
The NFDA projected Connecticut's cremation rate at 66.1% for 2024.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual; we only apply it to this.

What local funeral customs tell you about finding a provider
With cremation now the choice for roughly 66.1%[1] of the population of Connecticut, most vets here have a standing arrangement with one pet crematory. That's convenient, but the provider was probably chosen for dogs and cats, not for your axolotl. It's fine to ask the clinic whether that crematory has handled your species before, and to make your own arrangements if the answer is vague.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Connecticut figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in New Britain tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
New Britain weather, enclosures and timing
New Britain winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March and December. Cold gives you a little more time after a death, but it also means frozen ground. If you were planning to bury a hedgehog or glider in the garden, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is why many local keepers cremate first or keep their pet in the freezer until the thaw.
Don't leave a body outside to keep it cold in New Britain's winter, even in a box. Freezing and thawing damages tissue, wildlife can reach it and a sudden warm day undoes it all. A sealed bag in a freezer is steadier, and if a necropsy is wanted, the fridge is right for the first day or two.

What exotic pet cremation costs in New Britain
A tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill. Minimum charges, collection fees and a certificate can make a hedgehog's cremation cost as much as a cat's, even though the cremation itself uses far less time. Remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a hedgehog's fill a tablespoon. If very little ash will return, ask whether a simple pouch or small keepsake container lowers the New Britain price, and compare two quotes.

Permits, protected species and burial in Connecticut
Most of the decisions after an exotic pet dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, which Connecticut and your local authority may regulate, and paperwork for species that were permitted, licensed or protected. Keep any permit, purchase record or CITES certificate together before you call a provider; our notes on disclosure for unusual companions explain what they may ask.
To find your county or city office in Connecticut, start with the official Connecticut local government directory.
The rules that apply across Connecticut (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Connecticut page. New Britain may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
Step by step in New Britain
- Make sure your other animals are safe. Fix the heat, cooling or water problem if there was one.
- Wrap your pet in paper towel, then seal it in a bag, so fine fur, scales or skin stay together.
- Call your exotics vet and ask whether they'd recommend a necropsy, especially after an unexplained death in a colony.
- Don't bury or dispose of an amphibian or aquatic pet near water; tank water shouldn't be poured outside either.
- Ask two providers for a written quote, giving species, weight and length for a larger animal.
- Arrange delivery or collection, keeping your pet chilled on the journey.
- Let yourself grieve. You put real time and expertise into keeping an unusual animal well, and losing them is a genuine loss.
Keepsakes and tributes for an exotic pet in New Britain
Hardware City summers are sticky, and January nights hover around 20 degrees. For a loss in the hottest weeks, a cool basement or tiled bathroom floor, a towel and a couple of frozen bottles in socks will keep their body in good condition until collection. During a snowstorm it is fine to wait for plowed streets, since the cold gives you extra time.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from New Britain?
Usually yes. Bristol is about 8 miles away, Hartford is about 8 miles away and Meriden is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in New Britain?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is cremation common in Connecticut?
For people, yes: about 66.1%[1] of Connecticut deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in New Britain follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Worcester to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Worcester (roughly 65 miles from New Britain) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What size urn do I need for a hedgehog or sugar glider?
A very small one. Cremated remains usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 400 gram hedgehog leaves around a tablespoon and a glider only a few grams. A keepsake urn, locket or small pouch usually fits. Standard pet urns are designed for cats and dogs and will look almost empty.
Can I take my exotic pet's body across state lines for cremation?
For common species like hedgehogs or gliders, driving to a crematory in a neighbouring state is usually fine. For regulated animals, such as primates or anything held under a state permit, check with the wildlife agencies in both states first. Keep the body sealed and cool, and carry your paperwork.
