Arranging exotic pet aftercare in Johnstown

Johnstown, Colorado

What arranging exotic pet cremation in Johnstown is like

Open farmland still frames the newer housing around Johnstown, and on clear days Longs Peak stands out to the west. Plenty of households here arrived recently and may relocate again, which makes burying a pet on a lot you might sell feel uneasy; an urn indoors sidesteps that. Others hold back a small portion to scatter later somewhere with a mountain view that meant something to them.

Johnstown sits where Weld and Larimer counties meet, and it has grown quickly from a small farm town into a spread of new neighborhoods near the I-25 and US 34 interchange. Loveland, Greeley and Longmont are all a short drive away, so aftercare providers from several directions may cover your address. When you request options, give your subdivision name or nearest cross streets, since some newer streets do not yet appear on older maps.

Word of mouth matters in a town like Johnstown. Local keepers' groups, reptile and exotic shows and breeders often know which provider is happy with unusual species and which one isn't. It's reasonable to ask the crematory directly, too: 'Have you cremated a hedgehog, or anything this small, before, and did you return ashes?'

With roughly 22,433 residents, Johnstown is the 30th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. Denver, roughly 40 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Johnstown run from there.

Families in Johnstown often end up using a provider from Evans (9 miles), Greeley (10 miles, a larger centre) and Loveland (11 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

77.4%[1]

The NFDA projected Colorado's cremation rate at 77.4% for 2024.

9-12 years[2]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[3]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The numbers above come from Merck Veterinary Manual and Merck Veterinary Manual, if you'd like to read the original sources.

The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets

About 77.4%[1] of people in Colorado are cremated, so the infrastructure is there. What varies is experience with unusual species. Some local crematories now offer water cremation too, which returns a little more bone material than flame and appeals to amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. Ask whether it's available and what it costs for a very small pet.

We take the Colorado rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Johnstown, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Seasons in Johnstown and the first hours after a loss

For larger exotics kept outside, such as wallabies, a death in January, February, March, April, November and December often happens in a snowy paddock. Cold slows changes to the body but doesn't stop foxes and other scavengers, so move your animal into a shed or garage and cover it. Call a provider early in the day; rural collection in winter depends on daylight and road conditions.

Snow and ice can delay collection from Johnstown, especially from rural roads. For a small exotic that doesn't matter much: the freezer keeps them safely. For a larger animal like a wallaby, ask the provider what they'd do in a storm before you need them, and keep the body somewhere cold, sheltered and away from wildlife.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Johnstown

Containers are where a small pet's bill can surprise you in Johnstown. By our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more[5] than a full-size wooden urn from the same crematory, because small, finely made pieces aren't cheaper to produce. If a standard urn is included, ask whether they'll swap it for a keepsake at no charge, or return the remains in a simple pouch you can move later.

Before you bury or cremate: Colorado rules worth knowing

Pet cremation is lightly regulated in most places, and few laws say what a provider must put in writing. That makes your own paperwork the safeguard. Ask for a signed form naming the species, the weight, individual or communal and what will be returned, and keep it with the certificate. After that, what's left to check in Colorado is where burial and scattering are allowed.

Colorado keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Johnstown.

The Colorado page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Johnstown's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

What to do when your exotic pet dies in Johnstown

  1. If the death was sudden, start with the enclosure: is the power on, and are temperature, humidity and water quality where they should be? Any other animals of that species come first; aftercare can wait.
  2. Call the vet who treats your species around Johnstown and ask if a necropsy would tell you anything.
  3. Keep the body chilled, not frozen, until you've decided about a necropsy.
  4. Wash your hands and any tools before going back to your other animals.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, and what, honestly, will come back?
  6. Confirm everything in writing before you hand your pet over.

Memorials that suit an unusual companion

Johnstown summers bring highs near 90 and frequent afternoon thunderstorms rolling off the foothills, while January lows settle into the teens. On a warm afternoon, choose a basement or tiled room, rest your pet on a towel, and set a couple of ice packs inside pillowcases against their body. From November onward an unheated mudroom or garage corner usually keeps a small animal fine until someone can come.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Denver to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Denver (roughly 40 miles from Johnstown) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the Johnstown page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 77.4%[1] of Colorado residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Johnstown?

Usually yes. Evans is about 9 miles away, Greeley is about 10 miles away and Loveland is about 11 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Does the Johnstown climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

What if a crematory in Johnstown refuses my species?

It happens, usually because the provider isn't sure what will remain or whether paperwork applies. Ask your exotics vet which crematory they use for unusual patients, or try a provider in Denver. Small exotics travel easily frozen in a cool box. You can also send us your pet's details and we'll check with providers for you.

Do I need a permit to cremate a protected or CITES-listed pet?

Cremation within your own country usually doesn't need a new permit, but keep your existing permit and any CITES records to hand, because the provider or your permit issuer may ask. Keeping parts, preserving the body or moving remains across a border can involve separate rules. Check with the agency that issued your permit before you act.
