Arranging exotic pet aftercare in Sharjah

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

Finding a provider for an unusual pet in Sharjah

Sharjah's summers are fierce, with long spells above 40°C and sticky humidity near the coast. A car parked outside becomes dangerously hot within minutes, so do not leave a pet's body in a vehicle while you make calls. Keep them inside with the air conditioning turned up, lay them on a towel over frozen packs, and phone your vet early in the day. Clinics are often the ones who arrange cremation in the northern emirates.

Sharjah is the most traditional of the emirates, and burying a pet in a residential compound, a park or on public land is generally not an option. Cremation arranged through a vet is the usual route for families who want to keep something of their pet. Ask whether the cremation is individual, how long the ashes will take to come back, and whether you will receive paperwork for them, which is useful if you later relocate.

Necropsy is easier to arrange in a big city like Sharjah. Exotics practices here can often do a post-mortem in-house or send the body to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and some will then pass your pet straight to a crematory. If you keep a colony of sugar gliders or several hedgehogs, knowing why one died can protect the rest, so it's worth deciding on a necropsy before anything else happens.

About 1,400,000 people live in Sharjah.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Dubai (13 miles, a larger centre), Emirates Hills (26 miles) and Abu Dhabi (89 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

9-12 years[1]

Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.

4-6 years[2]

African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The numbers above come from Embrace Pet Insurance and Merck Veterinary Manual, if you'd like to read the original sources.

How United Arab Emirates thinks about cremation

Cremation customs differ from country to country, and so do the words providers use. 'Private', 'individual', 'separate' and 'single' usually mean your pet is cremated alone; 'communal', 'collective' and 'shared' usually mean nothing is returned; 'partitioned' sits in between. When you speak to a provider in Sharjah, ask them to describe the process in plain words rather than relying on the label.

Sharjah weather, enclosures and timing

If you're planning to bury your pet or their ashes in Sharjah, the season matters: frozen ground in winter, dry ground in summer. For amphibians and aquatic pets, choose a spot far from water or choose cremation, because some amphibian diseases spread through water to wild animals.

Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Sharjah

Where published prices are scarce, compare like with like. Ask each provider near Sharjah four things: the price for your pet's weight, whether cremation is individual or shared, what container is included and how long the return takes. In the markets we've compared, private cremation is often about double the shared price[4], which gives you a rough yardstick.

Rules and paperwork in United Arab Emirates

Invasive-species laws are written for living animals, but the reasoning applies after a death too. Anything from an enclosure that could carry a non-native parasite, fungus or seed, such as substrate, tank water or live plants, shouldn't be dumped outdoors. Bag it for household waste, or ask your vet. The notes for United Arab Emirates below cover burial and scattering of your pet itself.

In the UAE, burying animals isn't generally permitted and private ownership of many wild and dangerous animals is banned, so legally kept exotics are small species that are usually cremated. Shared cremation for a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900. Ask whether separate cremation is offered for very small animals and what would be returned.

A practical checklist for Sharjah keepers

  1. Choose the provider before the appointment. Ask whether they take your species and whether the vet can hand your pet over directly afterwards.
  2. Ask the vet how it works for a small exotic. Because the veins are so tiny, many vets give gas or an injection to sedate first; hearing that beforehand takes some of the fear out of the day.
  3. Decide whether you'll stay. Plenty of keepers choose to. Take along the hide, nest box or pouch they usually sleep in, so they feel at home.
  4. Say what you'd like kept: some quills, a snip of fur or, if the feet are large enough to leave one, a paw print.
  5. Write clear instructions on the release form: species, individual cremation, remains returned to you.
  6. Ask for an itemized receipt, one from the provider and one from the vet.
  7. Plan something gentle for afterwards. Coming home to an empty enclosure is hard. Some people clean it out the same evening; others can't face it for a few days.

Keepsakes and tributes for an exotic pet in Sharjah

Sharjah is home to many families who work in Dubai, and most live in apartment towers around Al Nahda, Al Majaz and Al Khan or in villa areas further inland. The roads between the two emirates are some of the busiest in the country at rush hour, which matters because a number of the UAE's pet aftercare services operate from Dubai. When you ask your vet or a provider for options, say which area you are in and when a collection could realistically reach you.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Sharjah?

The closest communities we cover are Dubai (about 13 miles), Emirates Hills (about 26 miles) and Abu Dhabi (about 89 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Sharjah too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?

Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.

Should I put my exotic pet in the fridge or the freezer?

It depends on what you want next. For a necropsy (an animal post-mortem), refrigerate and get to the vet within a day or two, because freezing damages tissue. For freeze-drying or taxidermy, freeze promptly. For cremation only, either works; the freezer gives you more time to find the right provider in Sharjah.

My pet died after being bought recently. Should I contact the breeder?

It's worth it. Reputable breeders of gliders, hedgehogs and axolotls often want to know about early deaths, may offer advice on a necropsy and sometimes have health guarantees that require one. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, until you've spoken to them and your vet.

How much ash will my axolotl or frog leave?

Very little. Amphibians are mostly water and have light skeletons, so a large axolotl may leave a gram or two and a small frog possibly nothing visible. Many keepers still choose individual cremation because it means their animal was treated alone and with care. Ask the provider in advance so you know what to expect.

Do I need a permit to cremate a protected or CITES-listed pet?

Cremation within your own country usually doesn't need a new permit, but keep your existing permit and any CITES records to hand, because the provider or your permit issuer may ask. Keeping parts, preserving the body or moving remains across a border can involve separate rules. Check with the agency that issued your permit before you act.
