The local attitude to cremation, and to unusual pets
About 99.97%[1] of people in Japan are cremated, so the infrastructure is there. What varies is experience with unusual species. Some local crematories now offer water cremation too, which returns a little more bone material than flame and appeals to amphibian keepers who think carefully about water and environment. Ask whether it's available and what it costs for a very small pet.

Timing exotic pet aftercare in Hiroshima's climate
Weather doesn't affect the ashes themselves. Cremated remains can be posted or collected in any season, and they don't need special storage. If you plan to carry them on a flight or across a border later, keep the certificate with the urn and check the carrier's rules first.
Why a tiny pet doesn't always mean a tiny bill in Hiroshima

Permits, protected species and burial in Japan
Most of the decisions after an exotic pet dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, which Japan and your local authority may regulate, and paperwork for species that were permitted, licensed or protected. Keep any permit, purchase record or CITES certificate together before you call a provider; our notes on disclosure for unusual companions explain what they may ask.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, and exotic animals are common enough that one University of Tokyo study found they made up 20.5%[7] of its necropsy cases. Some species are banned under the Invasive Alien Species Act. For small pets, ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨), since some municipal routes don't return remains.
What to do when your exotic pet dies in Hiroshima
- If you're away, ask your sitter to move your pet into a sealed bag, writing on it the date and time they were found.
- Decide by phone: fridge or freezer. The fridge is right if you're home in a day or two and a necropsy is possible; the freezer if your trip runs longer.
- Have them check the enclosure: temperature, water and power. A photo of the thermostat reading helps later.
- Ask them to look at every other animal and to call your vet if any seem unwell.
- Leave aftercare decisions until you're home, barring a health concern that can't wait. Once frozen, a small pet keeps.
- Once you're home, call a provider, describe the animal and its size, and book drop-off or collection.
Remembering your exotic pet in Hiroshima
Hiroshima's summers are hot and humid, and the rainy season in early summer brings heavy downpours; the hillside districts have suffered serious landslides in recent years. If a pet dies during hot weather, keep the body cool with wrapped ice packs and arrange cremation quickly. In typhoon season, allow for delays in collection and ask the provider how storms affect their schedule.

How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Hiroshima page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can I be present when my exotic pet is cremated in Hiroshima?
Often, yes. Big crematories in Hiroshima frequently offer an attended option, where you can see the cremation start, which many keepers of tiny animals find reassuring. It usually needs a booked time, and some providers charge for an attended cremation. Ask when you first call, and ask whether you can bring a small item, such as a favorite hide or a note, to go with your pet.
Do tarantulas and other invertebrates leave ashes?
Usually not in any meaningful amount. Invertebrates have an exoskeleton made of chitin rather than bone, and it burns away almost completely. Many keepers choose a resin piece, a display case or a framed molt instead. If individual cremation matters to you for its meaning, ask the provider to tell you honestly what, if anything, will come back.
Is communal cremation a bad choice for a very small pet?
Not at all. Communal cremation is handled with care; the difference is that no ashes come back. For a tarantula, a small frog or anything where little or nothing would return anyway, many keepers find communal cremation the more honest choice and spend the difference on a memorial they can keep.
Do I need a permit to cremate a protected or CITES-listed pet?
Cremation within your own country usually doesn't need a new permit, but keep your existing permit and any CITES records to hand, because the provider or your permit issuer may ask. Keeping parts, preserving the body or moving remains across a border can involve separate rules. Check with the agency that issued your permit before you act.
How long does exotic pet cremation take in a big city like Hiroshima?
The cremation itself is quick for a small animal, but the whole process, from collection to getting remains back, is often about one to two weeks. Providers in Hiroshima with frequent collection rounds may be faster. If you want your pet back quickly, ask whether the provider offers a priority return.
