Exotic Pet Cremation in Hiroshima: what to know

Whether you're in Hiroshima or a small town, the questions to ask about an exotic pet are the same: will my pet be cremated individually, how will a very small body be kept separate, what will honestly come back, and what's the total price in writing? The answers vary a lot across Hiroshima, which is why a second quote helps.

Most crematories in Hiroshima are built around dogs and cats, and exotic pets are a small share of their work. That's why keepers here often hear hesitation on the first call. Naming the species and weight, and asking whether the provider has handled something similar, turns a vague 'maybe' into a clear answer.

Cremation habits in Hiroshima, and what they mean for keepers

Cremation is the norm for people in Hiroshima: about 99.97%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That usually means well-established pet crematories and staff who are comfortable talking about ashes. It doesn't guarantee they've handled a glider or a spider, though. A high local cremation rate makes it more likely you'll find a provider nearby; the species question still has to be asked directly.

We take the Hiroshima percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

How much to budget in Hiroshima, from gliders to wallabies

Many cities in the region offer a low-cost municipal collection for dead pets, but remains are rarely returned. In Tokyo, by our estimate, a private-sector communal cremation for a small pet costs about 4.8 times[2] the ward's collection fee. If you want your exotic pet's remains back from a provider near Hiroshima, you need an individual service; confirm that in writing.

Pet funeral customs in much of Asia are well established, and small pets are often priced in the lowest band with a short ceremony included. In Tokyo, one pet memorial park charges JPY 14,300 / JPY 22,000[3] for communal and individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg. In Hong Kong, a provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[4].

What Hiroshima rules mean for an exotic pet

Cremating an exotic pet is rarely regulated on its own, but a few things around it can be. If your species needed a permit while alive, the permit may ask you to report the death. Protected species listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in endangered animals, may need their records kept. Burial and scattering follow local rules. Here's what applies in Hiroshima.

In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, and exotic animals are common enough that one University of Tokyo study found they made up 20.5%[6] of its necropsy cases. Some species are banned under the Invasive Alien Species Act. For small pets, ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨), since some municipal routes don't return remains.

The first day, step by step

  1. Tell your child simply and honestly that their pet has died. Avoid 'went to sleep', which can make bedtime frightening.
  2. Offer a chance to say goodbye if they'd like one. A small animal wrapped in a soft cloth looks peaceful.
  3. Seal and chill the body afterwards, labelled with the name your child used.
  4. Let them help choose between cremation and a safe burial spot, and pick a small container or keepsake.
  5. Ask the provider whether a drawing or short letter can go with their pet. Many allow a small paper item.
  6. Explain how long it will take before the remains are back, and circle that date on a calendar together.
  7. Keep routines steady, and be ready to talk about their pet as often as they need to.

Honoring a pet most people never got to meet

If you kept several animals of the same species, the loss can change the group. Watch colony animals such as sugar gliders for signs of stress in the weeks after a death, and talk to your vet about companionship. Caring well for the ones still with you is itself a way of honouring the one you lost.

If Hiroshima is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Can I bury an exotic pet at home in Hiroshima?

Often yes, for mammals, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the land. For amphibians and aquatic pets, bury well away from ponds and streams, or choose cremation, because some diseases spread through water to wild animals. Local rules can be stricter than regional ones.

What will come back after cremating a very small pet?

Cremated remains are mostly bone and usually weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[7]. A hedgehog leaves about a tablespoon, a sugar glider a few grams, an axolotl perhaps a gram, and a tarantula usually nothing. Ask the provider honestly before you book.

Can I travel with my pet's body to a crematory elsewhere in Hiroshima?

For common species, yes. Seal your pet in a labelled bag and pack it in a cool box with ice packs. For regulated or protected species, carry your permit and check whether moving the body needs approval. Larger exotics may need a provider who collects.

How much does exotic pet cremation cost in Hiroshima?

Most small exotics fall into a crematory's lowest weight band, so they cost about the same as a small cat, even if they weigh a few ounces. Large exotics like wallabies are priced like big dogs. Collection, certificates and keepsake urns add to the total. Ask for an itemised written quote.

How long will it take to get my exotic pet's remains back in Hiroshima?

By our estimate, a typical return window across the markets we track is 3 to 14 days[8], with some providers faster for a fee and some slower. A tiny exotic doesn't come back sooner than a dog, because remains follow the provider's schedule. A post-mortem beforehand adds the laboratory's own turnaround. Ask for an expected date when you book.

Does it matter where I bought my exotic pet?

For cremation, rarely. It can matter for paperwork: if the animal came with a permit, a CITES certificate or a breeder's health guarantee, keep those documents together. Some guarantees need a necropsy to be valid, and some permits require you to notify the issuer. A good breeder will also want to know what happened.
