Yakima, Washington
Exotic pet aftercare in Yakima: the local picture
Yakima is the county seat and main city of the Yakima Valley, set in the rain shadow of the Cascades about two and a half hours southeast of Seattle over the passes. Neighborhoods range from older tree-lined streets near downtown to newer homes on the west side and small acreages on the edges. Find out from your veterinarian who handles their aftercare, and whether that provider will come out to a house or needs the body brought in.
The Yakima River Greenway runs along the river through town, and many residents spend evenings there with a companion by their side. Because it's public land, ask before scattering ashes along the water. Many families prefer to keep the remains at home, or to bury a small portion under a fruit tree in the backyard, a fitting choice in orchard country.
Around Yakima, the nearest practice may be a mixed or farm vet more used to calves and horses than to gliders. Don't let that put you off. A farm vet can confirm death, store a body and often knows a provider that takes larger animals, which is exactly what you need for a wallaby, a big skunk or a kinkajou. For a tiny exotic, they can simply hold your pet in the clinic freezer until you've chosen.
With roughly 97,458 residents, Yakima is the 11th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover.
Families in Yakima often end up using a provider from Ellensburg (28 miles), West Richland (59 miles) and Wenatchee (59 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
79.1%[1]
Washington had a 79.1% cremation rate in 2024, among the highest in the US.
9-12 years[2]
Pet sugar gliders live about 9-12 years; adults weigh about 85-170 g.
4-6 years[3]
African pygmy hedgehogs live an average of 4-6 years; adult males weigh 400-600 g and females 300-400 g.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Merck Veterinary Manual and Merck Veterinary Manual.

How Washington thinks about cremation
Cremation is by far the most common choice for people in Washington, at about 79.1%[1]. That familiarity tends to carry over to pets, including unusual ones. Keepers here are more likely to find that a crematory already offers keepsake-size urns, small-animal trays and individual certificates, all of which matter when the animal weighed less than a pound.
We take the Washington rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Yakima, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Yakima weather, enclosures and timing
Snow and ice can delay collection from Yakima, especially from rural roads. For a small exotic that doesn't matter much: the freezer keeps them safely. For a larger animal like a wallaby, ask the provider what they'd do in a storm before you need them, and keep the body somewhere cold, sheltered and away from wildlife.
Winter is when heating failures happen. A power cut or a failed heat mat in January, February, March, November and December can chill a room of tropical exotics fast, and sugar gliders, hedgehogs and many invertebrates don't cope with cold. If you lose an animal this way, tell the vet so they can judge whether a necropsy is useful, and warm the rest of your animals gradually, not suddenly.

Prices for small and large exotics in Yakima
Across the markets we track, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] by our estimate. For a dog, that difference buys a box of ashes. For a glider, which weighs only 85 to 170 grams as an adult[2], it buys the certainty that your pet was handled alone. Decide which matters to you before comparing Yakima quotes; the aftercare options comparison lays the choices side by side.

What Washington expects after an exotic pet dies
A few exotic pets carry health rules as well as wildlife ones. If a skunk or other mammal bit someone shortly before it died, health officials can require rabies testing, and that has to happen before cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so this comes up more than keepers expect. Otherwise, the rules that matter most in Washington are about burial and scattering.

Start with the Washington rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Yakima's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
From enclosure to ashes: the steps in Yakima
- If the death was sudden, start with the enclosure: is the power on, and are temperature, humidity and water quality where they should be? Any other animals of that species come first; aftercare can wait.
- Call the vet who treats your species in or near Yakima, and ask whether a necropsy is worthwhile.
- Keep the body chilled, not frozen, until you've decided about a necropsy.
- Wash your hands and any tools you used before returning to the rest of your animals.
- Ask the provider three questions: is the cremation individual, how do you keep something this small separate from other animals, and what will I actually receive?
- Confirm everything in writing and only then let your pet go.
Ways to remember them that fit the species
Yakima's high-desert climate brings hot, dry summers, where July afternoons reach about 90F, and cold winters, when December nights sink into the low 20s and frost can come any time between November and March. Heat is the bigger concern after a loss: move the body indoors to a cool room, cover it lightly and arrange collection within hours. In deep winter, an unheated space helps, but proper refrigeration is still safer.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Yakima?
The closest communities we cover are Ellensburg (about 28 miles), West Richland (about 59 miles) and Wenatchee (about 59 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Yakima too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Yakima page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 79.1%[1] of Washington residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Yakima?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 90°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
My exotic pet died while I was on vacation. What now?
Ask whoever is caring for your animals to bag your pet securely, note the date on it, and put it in the fridge if you'll be home within a day or two, or the freezer if longer. Have them check the enclosure and your other animals. Aftercare can almost always wait until you're back, so you can choose the provider yourself.
What if my skunk bit someone before it died?
Tell your vet before arranging cremation. There's no licensed rabies vaccine for pet skunks, so health officials may require rabies testing after a bite, and testing must happen before cremation. It's rare, but once the body is cremated it can't be undone. Keep the body refrigerated while you find out.
How do I know I got my own pet's ashes back?
Ask how the provider keeps track of each animal. Reliable providers attach an ID disc that stays with your pet from intake to return, use a separate chamber or tray for individual cremations, and record each step. For a tiny exotic, check that only one animal is cremated at a time. A certificate that names the species and weight, not just 'pet', is another good sign.
